93253 Just wanted to know if anyone else noticed a lot of macroblocking/artifacting in a lot of the scenes in End of Days. Most movies I watch dont have any of this, I am using the A2 and a 5054 Sammy plasma.

Thx,
Claude

Edit...Pic added..

Screenshots of specific scenes would probably assist in finding the problem, or seeing if it appears only on your system.

The movie is very grainy and often soft. Peter Hyams shoots all of his movies that way.

The transfer has a lot of dirt on the source elements and some edge enhancement. I do not recall any macroblocking.

No macroblocking here. As mentioned Peter Hyams films are always dark, most scenes are shot at night, and usually have a fair amount of grain. Just his style. I think the disk looks very good.

Thanks for all the responses guys....I dont have a digital camera handy today but was curious to see what everyone is using for thier display. Like I said I have a samsung plasma 5054 and I sit pretty close (8ft) so some things are more aparrent to me. I dont notice too much macro blocking or artifacting in a lot of other HD DVD or blu ray movies but do notice it on this one....Please let me know what diplays you are using and how far back you are. If I can get my hands on a digital camera soon I will take pics and post them here.

Thx again,
Claude

I noticed no macroblocking. Viewed on a 130" projected image.

Looked ok on my HD-A1 and Mitsui 65 inch Diamond Rear PCRT.

This is a very bad pic...Sorry this camera is not the best but the best I can do right now....
This is from 1hour and 30 minutes and 50 seconds into the movie. It says 1:30:50 on the info screen of my A2. Someone please check out Arnolds face/neck and see if they see this same type of macroblocking/artifacting going on.

Edit most of the movie looks good but theres about 10-15 scenes like this in the movie that I noticed most are less apparent.

No macroblocking here either. But I will say that this film's PQ is very average at best. Better than SD-DVD, but now by a whole lot.

This movie worth owning? I gather not by the reviews, though I like most Arnold movies... Whaddya think?

Again its really bad quality but if you look atthe priest on the left....If you look above his head you will see some artifacting/macroblocking going on. This was at 4:28 (4 minutes and 28 seconds of the movie when paused)..
I just wanted to see if someone who has this movie can check it out and see if there is a problem. Maybe I have a bad disk or could be that since I have seen it on just a few other movies (mostly DVDs) and very few HD/Blu rays, it could be a display issue. Most of my Blu Rays and HD DVDs dont have this issue though.

I don't think anybody is going to be able to tell anything from just looking at those screen shots. I traded the movie a while ago, so I can't check. Looks like if could be a gray scale issue maybe? But with those screen shots who knows.

I know the pics are bad.....its pretty much the best I can do...

Was wondering if anyone has a digital camera and this movie could you take a shot of the movies and the times I gave? Just wanted to compare to what I saw on my TV. Any help is appreciated..

Universal is known for recycling their home video masters they did for laserdiscs with DVD releases and they seem to have done the same for HD-DVD catalog titles.
