View Full Version : I am sick of waiting, Gladiator NOW!
Mind you, I always thought (and think I posted) that I felt Universal was holding this release up since they didn't want it hitting BD (since Dreamworks was involved distributing). With DW now HD only, no excuses are left for not getting this release to the table.
This is war, men, and you bring every gun to the line. Squatting on your best releases, such as Gladiator, doesn't make sense anymore. I get the whole Jaws/JP/Spielberg thing, but there should be nothing holding up Gladiator at this point.
Hell, you know there's at least a respectable HD master for it out there, seeing as it's popped up on TNT HD with 5935690805 commercial breaks and about 2349590348 minutes of footage removed.
This is a title that should be out, now, without delay, and without excuse. Any other reasons I might have missed?

Isn't Gladiator Paramount?

It is a Universal/Dreamworks release but Dreamworks has the distribution rights in the US.

I would buy this instantly. I don't care what it cost.
Dan Hitchman 10-29-07, 10:50 PM Good luck getting Paramount to add lossless to this. It's a sad state of affairs at Paramount right now... even if they were still supporting Blu-ray.

I'll be honest, I don't care about the innards, I care about how it sounds. 1.5 DD+ sounds outrageously good to me. What I want is a lively, accurate soundtrack - whether or not I can double blind guess between the two is less important than simply enjoying the soundtrack.
At least for me.
The question is... what's the hold up now? Everyone is playing on the same team now on this release, Christmas is coming, HELLO...

Totally agree.
moshmothma 10-30-07, 12:16 AM This movie will look glorius as an HD-DVD. The BEV version is fantastic and better than several HD-DVD is I own. Now my question is will it be the normal or extended version?

hahaha in the latest entertainment weekly both crowe and denzel talk about that blemish together in their careers.
Gladiator is a must own for me one of my top 5 favorite movies.

You talking about that butchered 1.85:1 broadcast? I'd rather watch SD-DVD....

Dude, I used to work retail in movies, and during Oscar season, we had a promo of that playing all the time, and I would walk around saying the whole thing to all my co-workers :)

LOL, how sad, Virtuosity was a good film.

- I will be, once this comes out on HD-DVD...both theatrical and extended versions. Just put in all the extras from the extended, and put in the lossless audio, and we're golden.
Top movies I want on HDDVD: Gladiator, Patriot, Braveheart

Gladiator and Braveheart are THE two movies that I want as well. Those are two movies that were 'epic' to me, and just left me completely slack-jawed when I saw them for the first time. Like someone said a few posts up, these two titles would sell faster than they could hold them in the stores. I know at least 5 other of my friends, as well as family members, that would rush out (or order them online) the instant they became available. I can't tell you how excited that I'd be personally, it's giving me goosebumps just thinking about these two movies on HD-DVD.
"If you find your self alone riding in green fields with the sun in your face... do not be troubled, for you are in Elysium. And you are already dead! Brothers... what we do in life... echoes in eternity!"
"Stephen is my name. I'm the most wanted man on my island. Except I'm not on my island, of course. More's the pity."
"Your island? You mean Ireland."
"Yeah. It's MINE."
"You're a madman."
[Laughs] "I've come to the right place then."
EVERYBODY want's Gladiator! I'm sure it's coming eventually, I agree, it can't get here soon enuff - but it's also been rumored (and not by folks here - sources close to\at Paramount) that the Braveheart HD DVD is already in the works and coming soon - can't wait!
I've always said that a Gladiator release would make me buy a HD-DVD player. That or Braveheart my favorite movie of all time.
I'll notch my name down for one of the people that would purchase both Gladiator and Braveheart...amazing films they are.
clear31 10-30-07, 11:02 AM it's hard for me to say which i want more braveheart or gladiator
i just rented braveheart in hd on the xbox 360. have yet to watch it though

Marc D Carra 10-30-07, 11:32 AM I have the old Bell Expressvu HD recording from way back when bitrates were unusually high. It looks AMAZING in hi-def, and leaves the standard DVD in the dust, begging for mercy! Can't wait for an official release.
Marc.
+1 on many of the points brought up on this movie. Easily one of the movies out there that needs the HDM treatment (IMO)
That and Tombstone (flame suit on) are the 2 titles that I've been waiting for the most.
Lord Flatus 10-30-07, 12:43 PM I hate to say it, but I have a gut feeling that Gladiator and other "instant buy" caliber movies are being held for next Christmas when there are more players penetrating the market and sales of a premier must-own title like this might actually amount to something.
I have nothing to base this upon except my own cynical dread.

Your gut feeling may be right, but we can hope its wrong :)
I don't see why they would wait to release it. They can release it this Christmas and then again next Christmas but label it as the "Super Special Limited Edition"
*sighs* No, it's not.
It sure as hell is to those involved in HD DVD. I will end up with whatever format emerges, THEY sure as hell are in a format war, and as such, they need to do what they can to win, which includes bringing their best titles to the format.

Yes, it looks okay, but it is butchered to hell.

Montezuma58 10-30-07, 08:25 PM Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?

With 300 and Troy: DC, you would think that we have enough men in iron under garments in 1080p.
Just sayin guys... I mean I would like to own it, the original release of the DVD with DTS upscales really well.... I just can't cry out for men in iron underoo's.

Universal France had it on a "coming soon" list back in spring (together with Scarface) but they never released it.

I think the HD DVD camp is dropping the ball. Having Gladiator on the HD DVD sale shelf and not the BD shelf would be a good incentive to puy the 200 dollar player now! Holding back great titles is like shooting yourself in the foot.
Exactly my point. You are fighting for your formats survival, you bring all guns blazing. If you lose, then battle well fought. But if you lose, and sit holding the 2nd place trophy staring at boxes of ammo you didn't fire, then you deserve it.

schmiggyjk 11-01-07, 02:12 AM As tempted as I am go to format neutral this friday, there really arent key titles that I am dying to have. Transformers is ok, but I dont know if I would buy it. Where with BD spiderman and die hard sets are must haves, superbad, etc.
Now if gladiator was out on hd-dvd there is no doubt in my mind I would snatch one of these up. Its one of my favorites ever.
For me price isnt the deciding factor on hardware sales, software is, much like the reason I got a PS3 (halo is trash compared to pc fps games, and final fantasy and metal gear are must haves).
Get gladiator out on HD DVD and we will have another format neutral guy at $150 or less price point.
And im getting sick of that TNT cut, sure its looks gorgeous, but its so damn edited.

If you are near a Wal-Mart, it's inexcusable not to.

To each there own, if there was a $100 BD player, I'd be on it (though I really just want a dually). I would think that someone who wanted Superbad may want T40YOV and Knocked Up.

Well, you know it's coming, and it won't be on BD for at least 18 months...
There are so many movies out for each format that are exclusive, that I just can't but the "no titles interest me" line anymore. Hell, I want POTC, Black Hawk Down, Casino Royale, Die Hard, Kingdom of Heaven, and many upcoming flicks like Ronin, MaC, etc. If I didn't have HD I would be jonesing for Matrix, Bourne, Hot Fuzz, SotD, Serentity, Pitch Black, the Jack Ryan movies (likely the best box set to date on any format)...
I just can't buy a movie fan not looking at either HD or BD and saying "there's enough there to get me to drop $99 and get 5 free movies with it". Just denies logic.
And im getting sick of that TNT cut, sure its looks gorgeous, but its so damn edited.
I only watch snippets, the soundtrack sounds like an 8th grader spliced it. It's unwatchable as a complete film on TNT.

SlickVik 11-01-07, 10:43 PM I don't think anything will be able to beat the BEV cap for picture quality, especially not HD-DVD with VC1 -- it'll look terribly artificial that way. Blu-ray could probably match the BEV with an AVC encoded transfer on a BD-50 disc. The BEV cap is by far the best HD I've ever experienced bar none. To think that a space starved HD-DVD would match it?? Far out...
not a big deal for me. The extended edition in 6.1 DD ES looks and sound pretty awesome. It would be a marginal upgrade to hd dvd

Every movie is unwatchable in reruns on TNT and other commercial/p&S cable/network showings as well as the abortion that became "AMC." That's why I stick with off-the-air HD (not perfect reception always but spectacular when good) and HD-DVDs-- AND upconverted SD DVDs!
sharkcohen 11-04-07, 01:39 AM Gotta have Gladiator. It would be great to hear Lisa Gerrard's voice in TrueHD!
