View Full Version : Heavily scratched Transformers HD-DVD... Help Please
AnthonyB 10-29-07, 07:38 PM I was watching my copy of Transformers and all the sudden I heard a horrible noise from my player, the Disc jumped off track or something and it has scratches all over it basically the laser hit it and when it was passing by it was scratching it.
So, ,I have already put some car wax on it, and the scratches are almost invisible however the discs still won't play it my system. Also, I think the car wax made it worse.

How long ago did you get it and from where? If they can't tell you've messed with it, you may be able to get it exchanged, just say it was loose in the case when you bought it and you didn't notice til you took it home.

Why not call Toshiba and tell them you have a defective player that's damaged one of your discs? They'd hopefully send you a check or something as well as fixing your player?
How long ago did you receive it? You may be able to say it came loose in shipping.
I didn't, though - it should be Tosh's problem, not DVD Pacific's.

AnthonyB 10-29-07, 08:21 PM Loose? Do you mean "Lost"?
I'd call both toshibia and were you got it. get the disc replaced and the player fixed. you showed be able to get the disc replaced as its only been a few weeks.
Megalith 10-29-07, 08:27 PM Have Ratchet shoot his medical laser at it.
AnthonyB 10-29-07, 08:38 PM I don't think you understand.. The player was fine and has been fine for a while. However the Disc which I wanted to watch between the time of now and when I get the replacement (I'm guessing I'll have to buy it again.)
I just wanted to know what to do to possibly get the DVD readable again via my HTPC (Xbox drive)
GamerGuyX_GGX 10-29-07, 08:42 PM Car wax? Are you serious!?
That why I backup every HD DVD of mine to HDDs. Seriously if you have a HTPC, a server is not that expensive to set up. Really any old PC (find them use or any of those Tigerdirect specials on non state of the art stuff they try to sell off each month) would do as long as it have enuf IDE or SATA connections you need (so you don't have to invest in disk controllers). This would be ideal if you have a large catalog of HDM. Now that you also have anydvd... :D Only now if I can find a good free front end that works like Xlobby that works with HDM.
Addendum: I use this stuff I got from a electronic game store that works with CD's and game discs. The label is little worn but I think its call Perma-Spin (Pink Goop), It will help but if the scratches are real deep, then no go.
Category 5 10-29-07, 08:52 PM Car wax? Are you serious!?
Meguires PlastiX is a special polishing compound made for plastic, and it is finer than car polis designed for paint. My guess is you mistook car polish for car wax and used the wrong stuff.
If the scratch is not to deep PlastiX will get it out without leaving residue. Use a SOFT microfiber cloth. Paper towels will make their own scratches, and rub in small circles until the scratch is gone. Then, wash the disc in the sink with warm water and dish soap.
The car wax should come off with the PlastiX. You probably put on a layer of wax that is diffracting the laser even outside of the scratched area.
jeff1967 10-29-07, 09:12 PM What kind of ****** would put car wax on a disc? Are you insane?
AnthonyB 10-29-07, 10:19 PM It's all the polish I had.. I knew the disc was bad and I tried what I thought was my last option.
Will your player play any other discs. I don't know maybe you don't want to put in another HD DVD but you could try a CD and then work your way up from there. Discs don't just do that in players by themselves.
AnthonyB 10-29-07, 10:45 PM It plays movies fine, I just watched "300" today. I scratched TF last night and weeping like a sorry little girl.. :)

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are!!
BStecke 10-29-07, 11:24 PM Loose? Do you mean "Lost"?
No . . . if the disc became loose in the package, it could scratch the disc by wobbling around inside.
bobgpsr 10-29-07, 11:28 PM Take it to a video store like BB or Family Video and pay them a couple of bucks to run it through their disk polisher machine.

Search the Internet. I think Brasso works the best. It will even out any scratches if you do it properly.
You should use 60 grit sandpaper. Then there's no question that it won't play and you can buy another one and get on with your life. :)

:D
Hollywood__ 10-30-07, 03:25 PM Just for your information: You can't use car wax on a DVD or CD to get rid of the scratches because there are tiny crystals or "prisms" in the wax. You may as well toss that one out and get a new one because the laser cant see a single thing on the disc throught the wax coating. It's like trying to read microfilm through a crystal chandelier.
Fine Toshiba craftsmanship in the wild. Lord let someone else make a dedicated HD DVD SA that supports the new DTS codecs. Tosh is really starting to hurt the format more than help it.
Timothy Ramzyk 10-30-07, 06:29 PM Go to a used CD chain (Here they are CD MAX and DISC-GO-ROUND) they usually charge $2 - $3 to resurface a disk. It works, I've done it with a lot of purchased rental DVDs.

I find this statement a bit absurd in its boldness.
We're talking about a single incident here. And, frankly, we don't even know exactly what happend. It scratched up Transformers... but has played (and continues to play) other discs fine. I don't think we need to damn the "craftsmanship" of an entire company over this.
My Toshiba A1 has been playing discs just fine for over a year on my Toshiba HDTV. ;)
AnthonyB 10-31-07, 03:28 AM MovieStop gave me their full asking price for it. Why, I don't even know.

Based upon a personal experience with a Toshiba DVD player, I will admit.
Admit what? What was that suppose to mean?
AnthonyB 11-01-07, 02:50 AM I sold it to MovieStop. Got another one yesterday.
They gave me full price even though they knew the disc was heavily scratched.
morons (the moviestop people, not you)
I assume since the disc was sold, this will end the post. However, I would like to see it continue. Possibly the most entertaining/ridiculous post of all time. People putting car wax on their discs, brasso, buffing them, boiling them...Fantastic:D

They gave me full price even though they knew the disc was heavily scratched.Probably because they were confident that they could have their machine re-surface it.
