View Full Version : Time for HD DVD supporters to buy Warner Titles.

Just like the title says, this is the quarter that Warner will be looking at as they make their decisions regarding how they stand, format-wise for 2008.

If there is to be any hope of a swing to Warner becoming an HD exclusive studio, then a lot of Warner's HD DVD titles need to start moving through retailers and into the consumer's homes.

To that end, I suggest that anyone who is interested in showing support for HD DVD and Warner Bros. make a concerted effort to purchase Warner titles over the next four weeks.

My personal selections are:

Week 1: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory & 300
Week 2: The Best of HD DVD, Volume Three
Week 3: Phantom of the Opera, Superman Returns
Week 4: Blade Runner, Swordfish

While I realize that the efforts of a few dozen people will not make a huge impact overall, every little bit still helps.

Same here, plus I've already picked up 15 of theirs this month alone with probably another 5 on preorder. I'm sure over the next month I'll be picking up some more of their fantastic catalog releases though.

Same here, I got me a ton of Warner. Though with the Oceans movies and Dumbledore's Catamite films coming out, I'll be sending them alot more money.

Transformers sales already convinced them. And the fact that Sony will no longer subsidize BD replication in 08(not public yet) is going to be a major factor, my friend is a PR guy for Sony and they have already had meetings about how to spin losing warner.

All the BD talk is people pasting out of context cut up quotes.

Let us all hope that TrueHD is kicked to the curb for DTS-MA. Warner and Universal seem to get away with a crappy TrueHD track and pass it off as lossless. HD DVDs only flaw to me is too much TrueHD and not enough DTS-MA.

Are you serious? What did they come up with "Spiderman 4 direct to BluRay".
I like TrueHD but would love to have DTS-MA it's just a matter of pushing Toshiba into incorporating it that is the problem.

Keep TrueHD and not worry about DTS-MA. Heck if they do that then I would have to get a new preamp and player. The only way I can get full HD audio is with my HDA1 with analog outs.

Don't worry, Warner is going to be looking at more than just disk sales, By all means buy more of their disks, but there is too much Warner panic afoot these days. As with most here my HD library is pretty Warnerific already.

Warner's statement is more of a direct message to Blu-Ray to put their offer on the table whilst they already have HD-DVD's offer on the table. It's just a way to get the best deal and they are playing it right.

There is nothing to worry about for HD-DVD right now IMO. The disc sales are a miniscule element at this point in time. You need to get the hardware into homes before getting the software which is played on it. ;)

Whatever WB is going to do, they have probably already made up their mind.

But by all means, buy away!

I got the Potter movies on order through their web site.
Good price too if I remember right. $88 bucks
Twister, also, but I guess that movie got delayed until May 5 or something.

As some above have said as is the same with me, over half my HD DVD library is made up of Time Warner HD DVDs.My preorder list for the rest of the year ALSO just happens to be made up Time Warner HD DVDs which includes the $120 Harry Potter HD DVD 1-5 set.

I'm wondering if the upcoming announcement will have something to do with the release of the TWs TotalHD format that was/is supposed to include both formats of TW releases on either side of one disc.I haven't heard anythign about THD for awhile.

Same here. I also have a bunch of Universal titles along with 1 or 2 Paramount/DreamWorks.

But I don't think this will change Warner’s mind, IMO they already made a decision, it now depends on how many Player Sales will be sold for the Christmas Holidays.

Warner is not stupid, they know many BD titles are being bought by PS3 owners. What Warner wants it stand alone player owners to buy discs, not a bunch of inconsistent PS3 owners.

So, HD DVD needs to sell a dump load of HD DVD players in order to win Warner’s Heart. Warner is looking for future proof, somebody that buys a player for the sole purpose of playing movies on it, not games.

I already own every HD DVD that I want....so if they want me to buy more movies they have to release more movies that I want to buy. I dont buy movies that I dont like or would watch only once......I rent those.

I agree. Although anything is possible in this wild and crazy HDM ride, there just isn't ANY indication why Warner would go Blu. It does defy logic.

Then again, we didn't see Paramount coming either, on both sides.

How can they specifically mention hardware pricing and Bluray in the same sentence? The cheapest player is likely to be $399 over the holidays. This will not create a buying frenzy! One side is ready to take things to the next level, and the other side is ready to stall things for another year or two.

We shall all see soon enough me thinks. Warner goes Blu, I'm back to renting HD-DVD's until a 2.0 player hits $249 or less. Warner goes HD-DVD, I'll be on a buying frenzy the next day.

If this is a point of support then I would suggest selecting the Warner titles that offer the most interactivity and extras for us.

If anything swings Warner to HD DVD it will be Blu-rays lack of technology and being able to offer the same interactive features and web based market that HD DVD can.

If you really want to show your support do so by purchasing titles like 300 & Blood Diamond and using the web enabled features to show consumer interest in this superior technology.

Just got TMNT and 300 the other day...

And I already have Superman Returns, Batman Begins, v FOR Vendetta, Matrix Ultimate Collection, Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2 , and The Road Warrior, Troy, Superman 2...

so basically more warner titles than either paramount or universal in my collection

AND I CANT WAIT FOR BLADE RUNNER!

Ditto on that. The current releases have not implemented the "on paper potential" of True HD. Analog outs on G1 players are what I use to get the best sound, but I don't need to switch to the True HD option to get it because it makes no difference in the sound using the analog outs.

Yeah, I have been wanting that boxset for a while now, but I just haven't got it yet. As for PotO, It is supposedly a very film of a very good play so I am willing to blind Buy it. I also need to pick up one of their Best of HD DVD Collections too(the one with the Last Samurai in it).

Sorry, it is combo only. However, it is only an extra $5 more than non-combo disks.

Also there was Dan Silverberg, VP of high-definition media for Warner Home Video, which since Paramount’s move to the HD DVD camp is the only studio to support both next-generation formats.

That may not be for long, Silverberg said. “One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” he said. “When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”

Silverberg noted that Warner has the top-selling Blu-ray title of all time with 300 and is consistently No. 1 or No. 2 in both Blu-ray sales market share and in number of Blu-ray titles in the market.

“We can definitely talk Blu-ray,” he said. “We are committed to the format.”

.

The Last Samurai also looked excellent and has a trueHD track, we just re-watched it the other week.

I've had the Harry Potter imported release for awhile now and it is one of the best in my collection for picture and trueHD. If this is any indication of how the full boxset will look when its released come December I would definitely suggest pre-ordering this one.

Looks like I'm at 38 Warner titles out of the 103 released on HD DVD currently. While counting I noticed there are two dozen more Warner titles on HD DVD then Blu-ray. I didnt realize it was this many releases they skipped on BR.

Here is a list of all the released and announced Warner titles. I have an 'X' next to the ones I own if you care to ask me any questions about them I would be happy to give my honest opinion.

how come some of warner's movies are not in blu ray?

it doesn't make sense

Two dozen titles are missing from the Blu-ray side.

It was said that Warner wanted to wait until Blu-ray was technically able to provide the same PiP features, interactivity and web enabled functions that are on the HD DVD releases.

Odd that some of these titles are announced for the comming holidays yet the hardware features for Blu-ray have still not changed.

I wonder if planning on exclusively supporting HD DVD they have decided to just release titles without the interactivity for movies that have already been encoded and are ready to go...

If anything, an impending announcement is going to make me sit on my dollars. Warner is trying to do an announcement as quickly as possible, as to not prolong the speculation. We'll see what they have already decided.

If they simply announce some titles, and then mention that they will consider exclusivity in 2008, I think a lot of people will buy fewer, not more Warner movies -- as people don't want to buy disks in the wrong format!

Why it they already own a player from either format, the discs will continue to play as long as they own it. Its not like the losing format owners are just going to through there current players in the trash.

I agree, and it makes perfect sense for the buyer to wait. I fully support HD-dvd, but I only own about 12 movies. I'm renting most of the movies I watch right now on this format. Not until there's a clear winner will I start spending my hard earned cash on hd-dvd or blu-ray movies if it comes to it, If Warner wants to take its sweet time to decide what to do, it will not be coming out my pocket. At this point Warner is the only studio that can decide who wins or looses, so I am not buying their brand, Paramount may get my money much faster at this point.

It doesn't make sense if WB went for BDA.

As Michael Colllins said of the WEB features and PiP

"In "The 300," for example, viewers are given the ability to call up a picture-in-picture image over a scene, showing how the image looked before blue-screen computer-generated graphics were added.

In Warner Home Video's "Blood Diamond" (out now) viewers are given the chance to participate in online polls and instantly view how a response gauges with "the online community" for the film. Other extras that benefit from the connectivity include strategy-oriented video games in "The 300"

In a title soon to be announced, Collins said the connectivity will open the ability to make e-commerce purchases of certain apparel items featured in the film.

"With the network people can download just what they are interested in and they can get rid of what they are not interested in. You have unlimited capacity," Collins said.

In addition, some studios have encoded hidden content on discs that can be unlocked using special keys downloaded from the studio's Web site.

Written into the mandatory spec for all HD DVD players is a "persistent storage" requirement, meaning flash memory that will enable temporary downloads of extras content after network connections have been established.

Although the Blu-ray spec has BD Live interactivity available, Collins pointed out that no currently available dedicated Blu-ray Disc player offers a network connection.

"Network connectivity is not mandatory in the Blu-ray spec it has always been optional," Collins said. "The only player that has the ability to connect to the Internet is the PS3 and that's not BD Live compatible yet, so there is no one that can do networking."

I can't see Warner go Blu exclusive. Considering their history with the HDDVD format it defies logic.

Yes, the article was designed to take away the thunder of Toshiba's new pricing. Many of those same people are claiming that Toshiba knew about it a week ahead of time and then put out the "fire" sale. Unfortunately these same people don't understand that an event like this takes months to plan (on Toshibas part). Takes months of manufacturing, and preparing.

It is just Blu-ray spin, it will be known for the lie that it is soon enough.

Why, just last week Blu-Ray folks swore that BD+ could not be cracked. heh.

Well, to be honest, an event the mainstream public knows nothing about, reported in a magazine the mainstream public doesn't read, wouldn't really put a damper on the Toshiba sale.

And "We can definitely talk Blu-ray"... I'd LOVE to see what context that was taken out of... the phrase is almost nonsensical.

How about a nice list of present and coming Warner titles on HDDVD for use to consider.

You need to get the hardware into homes before getting the software which is played on it. ;)

Agreed.

as far as getting the hardware into the homes, the $ 199 price point at Walmart and Circuit City and the black friday $ 169 A3 at Sears is going to help that tremendously.

$ 399 ps3 will help blu-ray but not nearly as much as a sub 200 hd-dvd player imo.

First is on the "5 for free" list of Toshiba, second comes with any A3 player (along with Bourne Identity).

Week 2: The Best of HD DVD, Volume Three

Dunno, I'm always suspicious about any kind of bundles, usually there's some crap to stuff it though I have to admit this #3 seems to be the best of these "best of" packs indeed: the Blazing Saddles-Goodfellas-The Departed trio for $50-60 dollars is a great value already (plus you get a half-dud crap like Superman.)

Week 3: Phantom of the Opera, Superman Returns

Another Superman? Thanks but no thanks - enough from idiotic, worthless crapshoot Hollywood movies.

Week 4: Blade Runner, Swordfish

Blade Runner: a big resounding YES but you cna get the 5-disc Complete alreayd or wait for the arrival of the 5-disc, briefcase-styled Ultimate, slated for later November release.

Sworddfish? C'mon, I said enough from worthless Hollywood ****. :p

Highly doubt it will make any difference but whatever...

Agreed.

as far as getting the hardware into the homes, the $ 199 price point at Walmart and Circuit City and the black friday $ 169 A3 at Sears is going to help that tremendously.

$ 399 ps3 will help blu-ray but not nearly as much as a sub 200 hd-dvd player imo.

A3 is $149 at HH Gregg. That is a BestBuy/CC of the Midwest.

I thought it was coming out the same day as the briefcase ultimate edition.
