Besides MLB playoffs, I haven't seen any real HD on this channel yet. Anyone else come across any yet?

I think this is going to be a very quiet thread until the MLB Season starts in April, and then there will be one sighting every Sunday.

I hope I'm wrong.

According to them its all HDTV and DD5.1.

But to answer your question. I have not seen a true HD program on their yet. I keep checking when I see a movie in the guide or a show that has always been in HD like "The Office". But still nothing.

haven't even seen tbs produced "house of payne" in HD or "the office" in HD or not 1 of the 50+ movies they've shown were in HD.

Frank Caliendo is the only thing I'll be watching on TBSHD. I didn't even want the channel for baseball, and with that gone... it was until tonight before seeing any other HD on the channel.

You are rounding up to the nearest whole percent.

1 hour out of a week is more like 0.59 percent.

The original TBS press release said that their original programming was produced in HD, however I recorded an ep of the Tyler Perry show the other day, which wasn't in HD.

I've set the DVR to record Bill Engvall today, to see if it's in HD.

If they can't even get the programming in HD that they say is in HD, why did they launch the channel? And why can't they show the movies in HD that TNT has had in HD previously?

richiephx
11-17-07, 12:05 PM
Because TBS HD is a big scam. Non-technical people think they are watching HD because it fills the screen. I don't watch any of the Turner channels because they all suck. If it's not HD, its stretchovision or it's interruptions with pop ups. If that's the future of HD you can keep it.

I know, I don't understand why people say "True HD" and "Tru HD" like it's a brand or something. As in, referring to HD content. Obviously it's appropriate for TrueHD audio.

That's weird. I'd rather have it that way, instead of how it is on DirecTV with everything marked as HD. But of course, the best way would be for it to be accurate. Apparently that's too much to ask from Turner, though.

Last I checked, A&E still forgets to flip the switch. I haven't caught a truly new HD program on A&E for a while, but shows that should be HD are still stretched.

Even thought tonight's new episode of FrankTV said it was in HD, it wasn't. It was presented in crapovision which seems to be the standard for HD on TBS. I find it hard to believe that TBS misrepresents itself like this and people buy it? This is the last time I will watch TBS. Give me an ala carte option for HD channels. Give me choice.

I'm not sure why I bothered, but I emailed TBS a while ago about their stretching of 4:3 content and they finally replied earlier this week with the following:

"In an effort to present a consistent broadcast, we have decided to maintain the same aspect ratio for all HD programming. An unfortunately consequence of this is that the standard TV ratio of 4:3 is presented as 16:9. This is what “stretches” the image.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Best,

TBS Web Staff"

and my response:
"You have decided poorly. You should present content in their original aspect ratio. I'm sure most viewers do not like seeing their favorite actors bloated by your stretching of the 4:3 shows to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. The actors probably don't like looking bloated either."

Unlive TNT and TBS, Turner Movie Classics has nearly always been OAR on their SD channel. I would bet they would do the same for HD.

In fact, I remember seeing them do a little featurette explaining how much is lost when you don't present a movie as originally shot. I they'd they'd be a fine addition to any HD lineup.

Well then the DVD is cropped too. Take a screenshot from TBS SD and TBS HD, and you'll see it. Good to know TBS isn't doing the cropping, though.

According to IMDB, the movie was shot spherical on 35mm, meaning there was extraneous video on the top and bottom that was lost in the crop to the intended 1.85:1 aspect ratio. That would be the correct ratio that the director intended, thus the DVD and TBSHD radio is correct, or for our purposes and terminology "original" since that's what screened in theatres. Taking the entire 35mm print for the 4:3 feed is fine with me, since I'd rather them add than subtract.

And now later in the evening Almost Famous is ALSO in OAR. TBSHD matches up with the DVD (including weird tiny windowboxing over the titles that I never noticed before) and TBS SD is again showing extra video on the top and bottom (this film was also spherical 35mm and cropped down to Crowe's intended aspect ratio).

Are you trying to say that the PQ wasn't up to snuff, or that it was stretched 4:3? Because it was absolutely 16:9, there is no debating that.

This is great news. I wonder what other shows will be shown in HD. Lots of movies are shown on this channel
