View Full Version : Theater Wall all ready (pics)...need projector!
Jason Falejczyk 10-30-07, 12:15 PM Well...I finally have finished construction of the home theater wall: solid cherry frame-out, DIY AT screen wrapped in Fidelio, etc....
....but I have no projector. Do I need one? Can't I just look at the purty screen...or have the kids act out scenes in front of it from their favorite movies??
It's either the Panny PT-AE2000U or the Sanyo PLV-2000Z if I go the 1080p route...or the Panny 200 to save some dough.
Oh well...in case you want to take a peak, below is a link to some pics.

That is a great looking screenwall! if you are debating between those two sub $3k 1080P projectors, you'll probably want to wait a couple of weeks to hear direct comparisons. What will be your seating distance? Is that 13' distance you mentioned from the rear wall to seats or the screen wall to rear wall? If it is not too close, you may even want to consider other 720P options like the Infocus 7210 that was originally >$5k but can frequently be found for $1k. 100" is not a very large screen and may look fine with some of the lower cost 720P options available (Marants VP4001, etc).

From the projection screen to the part of the sectional against the wall: around 13' ft.
100" is not a very large screen
If I hear that from one more person!!!!! Yeah, I know. However, you can see I really could not go any bigger. I compromised the initial design of the screen wall just so I could stretch it to 100" in order to claim triple digits on the diagonal.
I am considering 720p for that reason. At my seating distance and screen size, I'm not sure I'd benefit from the higher resolution. However, considering everything else that the 1080p's bring to the table, I may decide to buy one after all the reviews come out.
Nice job on the woodwork!
BTW,
Don't let the guys wanting to show off their pee-pees get you down, 100" isn't small. :D You're at about 1.8x the screen width so you could probably get away with either a 720p or 1080p PJ, but I'd go with the 1080p because they are generally better overall performers.
windrockwater 10-30-07, 03:08 PM Hi Jason:
I sit roughly the same distance from my 106" screen and i found the jump up to 1080P Blu Ray movies via a PS3 to be very noticeable over my last 720 projector. Very nice job by the way. Looks very professional. Will you have a cover over your equipment shelving so its not distracting during movie watching?

I prefer to keep it open for ventilation. The receiver isn't overly flashy and the Panamax lights can be turned off...so that's helps. If I can devise a way to cover and not overheat the equipment, I may end up doing that.
The component area isn't done yet. I still need to build a bank of drawers on the bottom half.

I know...I know. The wife would never go for it, even though that room's ceiling is physically separated by a beam, so the rest of the basement could stay white.
Alan Gouger 10-30-07, 04:15 PM Very nice. You should get some lighting behind the screen. When you tell people the screen is Transparent they will not believe you then you can flip the switch. A good way to show off your speakers as well.Great carpentry work. I think we all know what room
you will spend most of your time in:)

Thanks for the compliments. I have thought about using lights behind there, but right I need to focus my attention on the light in front of the screen: the projector!:)
I wasn't trying to put down the screen size. What I was saying is that you don't have to worry about pixel visibility like someone who has a 120"+ screen in a similar sized room.
