View Full Version : HDFury or Transcoder?
My 2nd gen CRT 1080i HDTV set does not have component HD inputs. This was no problem as long as my only sources were RGBHV (HTPC, DTC100 DTV STB).
I bought a cheap Transcoder to use w/ my xbox 360, since it does not support 1080i in RGB mode. It works, but the picture is noticably degraded. Reds are shifted to the side, and I also get wierd horizontal tearing lines from time to time.
I just upgraded the DTC100 to the new HR-20 DirecTV HD DVR, and it doesn't do RGBHV either. I can use the aforementioned transcoder, but with the same picture degradation.
I've trying to research my options. I could try a better transcoder, or something like the HDFury. My gut tells my the HDFury would offer the best picture.
Could a quality transcoder compete quality and price wise?
Would my KVR switch provide enough line amplification to drive a longer VGA cable, or would I need to put the HDFury right on the back of the TV?
I guess what I'm asking can a transcoder like X2VGA 2 compete with a DVI/HDMI to RGB decoder like HDFury.
I sent an email to these guys to answer a relatively simple question regarding their device as follows:
Sirs,
My question concerns using your unit to output and convert HD DVD from an Xbox360 to an HDTV. I need the component to RGBHV transcoder function to do this, and would like to use your unit if you will assure me I will have a high quality picture. Also, do you include the cable to connect your device to the XBox 360? I will pick up a VGA to 5 BNC (RGBHV) video cable separately.
Thanks in advance,
Tony
P.S. - Do you have a U.S. distributor yet to save on shipping?
I stated it in this manner since this device is sold as an Xbox add on. What I really need to know is will their product provide a clear component to RGBHV transcode function (as compared to a KD-VA5, which recommended by Mitsubishi for all first gen HDTV owners?
I'm not familiar with this HD Fury device, but will go read about it.
So far I've received no reply. Since they stick you with a $22. freight charge, I think they should have to answer this before I would take a risk on their product.
FYI, I decided to buy the HDFury device. It appears to offer technology that no transcoder could ever do. I may try to buy a X2VGA 2 transcoder just to compare a component to RGBHV conversion to the HDFury at some point.
oliverg 11-07-07, 01:27 AM By its very nature, the HDFury is a much better choice - HDMI and HDCP compliance straight to RGBHV keeps your video chain digital right up to the display.
Have you bought this device Oliver?
Well, I've done some more research.
First of all I have to correct the record. At the very top of this thread I stated that my HDTV only accepts RGBHV. Thanks to this post over at the HT Spot, I realized that the option to switch is kind of buggy. It does not always show up.

So I can now connect both my XBOX 360 and the HR-20 via Component and no transcoder needed. :)
For anyone considering the HDFury, be warned that it does not work right with most Mitsubishi CRT RP HDTVs. There is yet another product, also available via Curt Palme's site, called Box1080, that does the same thing as the HDFury, but without the sync / shift problems that the HDFury has.

Yes - its great
Cheers
Bertil, I wish I'd read your post about HDFury and Mitsu HDTV earlier. Oh well, as long as there is a good product path, it sounds like I can sell the HDFury if it has probs with my Mitsu since it seems to work well for most people. I haven't received my purchase yet to know if it works or not.

You should rather blame MITS !
HDfury is doing perfectly on mostly any display, if you use RTC2200 it will works good on MITs as well
As about the Box1080, i'm not sure about what you are trying to do with this, but any one out there should we aware that BOX1080 IS NOT HDCP Compliant !!
It will not allow you to decipher HDMI signal, so what's the point of using that ?
Working solution would be Moome External HDMI box, but that's more expensive than HDfury and RTC2200 and not yet available (pre order)

Yes it is. The Box1080 is 100% compliant. You're thinking of the newer BoxHD which replaced the Box1080. The BoxHD is *not* HDCP compliant.

Hello, I have a Mits TV too, (WS-55875), and was interested in the HD Fury for my tv. Hve you gotten it yet and did it work. The problem with the Mits TV is image shifting?
