Hi All,

I need advice on a gaming TV. I'm going to use the 360, ps3 and wii on it. I'm looking at around 50 inches. I currently have a sony 34 inch. What is an overall great gaming TV? Thanks, for your advice.

Samsung lcd's have game mode and you won't have to worry about any burn in because its lcd. I would suggest any of their 1080p models.

+1 I have two Samsung LCDs and love them both. I recently went to my local BB and saw the new Samsung LCDs with the LED smartlighting. WOW. I want to upgrade already. 100,000:1 contrast ratio! The blacks on screen blended in with the piano black bezel. Definitely check them out.

What is your budget?

I am not a fan of piano black bezels. Too reflective.

Vizio, I have the 37" and it's spectacular. What difference there is between my TV and a name-brand is by no means worth the extra cash in my opinion. If you want to spend a little more I've compared Vizio's high end 50" model to a Sony Bravia and so almost no difference. O and motion-blur is nearly non-existent on my set.

For gaming, bigger is not necesserily bigger. I know folks who have huge sets 60 + but perfer gaming on smaller sets. I have a 46" DLP which is perfect for me and the distance I sit from the couch. Some prefer even smaller.

How far away will you be sitting?

What percentage will you be gaming versus watching movies?

I recommend at least 50 inches and 1080p, especially if you will watching HD movies.

I'm also in the market for a new TV and I've been looking at the Panasonic Plasmas and the Samsung Plasmas. As long as your somewhat careful, burn-in on a new plasma is almost unheard of anymore. I'd also urge you to take a look in the display devices section of AVS. There is a TON of information on TV's in there.

Burn-in on plasmas is pretty much a huge myth. You need to be doing something really crazy to get permanent burn-in. You WILL see image retention, which is temporary ghost images of static portions of the picture, like a health bar or scoreboard from a sprorts game on TV. This isn't burn in, just a side effect of how plasma works. It usually fades after 15 minutes or so and is practically impossible to see unless you're looking at a uniformly colored screen (and who does that). Most plasmas also have settings to wipe out image retention if it occurs.

There are reasons to choose an LCD over a plasma and vice versa, but burn-in isn't one of them.

Well said, jremy510

I have the Samsung 50 inch Plasma (Model FPT-5084). I payed the current asking price at Amazon.

It is perfectly, absolutely gorgeous and a superb improvement over my previous Sharp Aquos 32.

A word of caution, the biggest drawback to owning this set is your own insanity.

You WILL worry about burn-in. You WILL wonder if you're doing is damaging your set by setting the contrast too high, playing games on it too long, etc...

As long as you take care to use the Screen Burn in protection after long bouts of static image gaming (Halo 3 healthbars, Sports game tickers, etc) you WILL be okay.

Plasma is highly recommended, but you must un-learn all the stuff you have heard about what what gaming on Plasmas used to be like. ;)
