Yea thats a dam shame, well that and the price ;)
Heros only had german subs so thats no real loss.
According to reports from german forums, RE 1&2 and Hero have forced downscaling activated for analogue output!
This could explain (in parts) the low PQ reviews...

I watched both over HDCP compliant HTPC and agree with this reviews. I have never seen a better version of Hero tough. All DVDs I know look like ****. Sure, the HD DVD is not very good, but better then every DVD I know of this movie.

When I did a HD DVD vs. DVD Face/Off with Hero, the only difference I saw was that the HD DVD had stronger colors. I don't know what, but something must have gone very wrong at Constantin with these HD-Titles.

Not sure whether those reviews reflect it, but we heard recently that both titles have the ICT in effect, so the titles will put out only in low resolution if connected via analog component wires. There was some speculation about that (whether the reviewers were aware of that) on some german AV boards as well. However, I've been told that Resident Evil looks bad even over HDMI (full rez) so it's probably a problem of the master.
resident evil was mostly shot in the dark and in the SD dvd there was quite alot of noise in scenes. I'm sure its the same with HD.
Resident Evil cable HD broadcast didnt look soo good either, and even the newest RE-Extinction wasnt soo hot in the theaters. They all had muted colors, almost like they either filtered it or, shot on equipment with a limited color range, or I am just soo used to the vibrant pumped up colors of DiscoveryHD / CSI that its just my perception.
I think it is just the movies and how they were shot/transferred?
Crappy transfet from film hopefully that can be rctified by a new transfer/re-release?

I was just in Germany and almost picked these 2 titles up. Had 'em both in my hands. Ended up buying only Silent Hill on HD DVD.

so what is the definitive take on these movies? are they cr@p? (the IQ, I mean, not the movie itself).

they ARE worth it, that rating for the first movie below 70/100 is insane, it I'd give it a 74-75/100 to the first one and 80/100 to the second film, and tot he sound a good 95/100 to both, I had the s uperbit plus the delux edition for the first one and none look nowhere as close as this HD-DVD. I think the parts when quality seems to linger come direclty from the source, since they fail too on the dvd's. So if you can get them at a good price, sure thing, get them!
