View Full Version : Baraka
stumlad 10-31-07, 12:42 AM Any idea which studio would release the movie Baraka? Just saw it on DVD and though this would be outstanding on HD DVD (or BD). I saw some behind the scenes and they said it was shot on 70mm. Way more than enough to give us 1080p.
eapleitez 10-31-07, 12:51 AM Perhaps RB Films if they have the rights to it.
FredProgGH 10-31-07, 01:11 AM IMdB shows Samuel Goldwyn Co. as the US distributor. Baraka has been showing on the UHD network as well, which would make me think it could be an HD-DVD title. It looked very good on HD cable and the photography is stunning (AFAIK it was actually shot in a non-anamorphic 60mm widescreen format) so it should be a jaw-dropper in a good HD release.
vancouver 10-31-07, 01:14 AM this is a great movie, and it would be a fantastic HD release. i forgot about this great tittle until just now.
JaylisJayP 10-31-07, 01:32 AM heh...i read this and thought you were talking about the Mortal Kombat character.
dr hypothesis 10-31-07, 01:47 AM The anamophic dvd looked rather poor at times. Hopefully if it gets released they'll do a better job. Done right this would be the definition of 'reference'.
philnerd 10-31-07, 07:16 AM Would be an instant pre-order. I've been wondering about this title since I bought into HD last year. I can hardly imagine a film that would be more incredible in high definition.

BlackMR2 10-31-07, 11:13 AM wasn't chronos done by the same guys after? I have that one
SXRDMan 10-31-07, 12:36 PM I would love to see Koyaanisqatsi come out as well! (Ron Fricke did the cinematography for Chronos, Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi.)
Rainier2 10-31-07, 12:37 PM Lol... thought it was the MK character too! :P
Don May Jr 10-31-07, 01:19 PM I do believe BARAKA is owned by MPI MEDIA GROUP (the parent company of DARK SKY FILMS). I would imagine that, some day, they will release BARAKA in an HD format. Look here:

Chronos was done before Baraka, when Ron Fricke got frustrated with the lack of credit he received for his work on Koyaanisqatsi. The idea was to 1-up the Qatsi movie by going IMAX. It was shot beautifully, but had no theme other than time lapse. After Powaqqatsi, he borrowed the "humanity's common thread" theme to make Baraka, which was shot in 70mm and repeats some of the same material as Chronos, but benefits from its feature length and the theme.
stumlad 10-31-07, 03:19 PM heh...i read this and thought you were talking about the Mortal Kombat character.
Yeah I also thought of him too. When I first heard of Barack Obama, I thought of some strange character that looked like a cross between Osama bin laden and the Mortal Kombat's Baraka. Then when I heard his middle name was Hussein, well.... you can just imagine. (Disclaimer: Did not mean to bring Politics into this, and I have nothing against Obama!).
Either way, you guys should check out this film. If it comes out on HD DVD (or BD) I'm buying it.
TV Casualty 10-31-07, 03:22 PM I admit I've never seen this film, although the thread title does make me want New Line to bring out the first MK movie on HD DVD...

tamahome02000 05-27-08, 10:30 PM I just got Baraka on dvd, as much for the music as the video. Really beautiful. It'll be part of my 'sleep' collection, along with Atlas Dei.
Brajesh 05-28-08, 11:27 AM I have this on a homemade HD DVD from an InHD cable TV airing [around 18mbps MPEG2]. Looks very good, so BD would be even better.
tamahome02000 05-28-08, 11:32 AM Oh my, I saw the live baby chickens being processed last night for the first time.
