View Full Version : Jittery Picture From VHS Source

Not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, but I'll post it here anyway just to see. I say this because I consider myself technically knowledgable and experienced when it comes to home theater gear and I can't explain it myself.

Here's my current bedroom set-up:

I have a Toshiba 36HFX73 36" CRT HD display. I use the video one input as a shared VHS / Super Beta input via a composite connection, Y cabled into the set. The Super Beta deck is a Sony SL-HF650. I'm still working on finding an adequate VHS deck (see below). An MDP-455 Sony Laserdisc Player occupies the video two input also via a composite connection (as opposed to an S-Video connection as I'm pretty sure that the dynamic 3D Y/C 4MB 10-bit comb filter on the Toshiba is superior to the three line digital comb filter in the player). Colorstream HD1 has an Akai DVPS760 Progressive Scan DVD Player.

Here's my situation:

I'm very satisfied with the picture quality results that I get on the set from the laserdisc player, dvd player, and super beta vcr. However, playback from a vhs vcr yields a consistently and constantly jittery (up and down) picture - almost like the picture is vibrating. It does this no matter how I have the VHS deck hooked up (directly into the set vs through the Y cable) or what VHS deck I use. To date, I have tried the following VHS decks and all have yielded the same results: Sansui SV-R9000, Sansui SV-R9700HF, Sony SLV-696HF, Canon VR-HF800A, Toshiba SV-970, Toshiba SV-F990, NEC DS-8500U, Hitachi VT-87A, Hitachi VT-F551A, and Panasonic PV-1631M. I know that the cable is good as the Super Beta works just fine on it.

I don't understand how this can be as the Super Beta works just fine. Keep in mind that I'm running the VHS directly into the set and not through any other device. Could this be some kind of BS macrovision problem???

Anyone else with this problem??? Can it be corrected???

Any advice or information on this one is greatly appreciated!!!

It could be your CRT is interfering. Usually happens if VHS is close to TV set, below or over it. I had to move mine to the side and jitters were gone.
