Just in... K-Mart will only carry and stock HD-DVDs and HD-DVD players starting with the Toshiba HD-A2 line. The move will take place this holiday season when the store will carry Toshiba brand players at the reduced price of sub $200. The Sears owned company made the switch to HD-DVD due to the high volume of "Transformers," HD-DVD sales and the lower priced Toshiba HD-A2 models. They will however continue to sell the PS3 video game console. Universal and Paramount have stated that it was critical for a sub $200 player to reach the mass market and that this helped spark the move at K-Mart. Earlier this month the Sears Companys black firday ad which lists after Thanksgiving Day sales was leaked online. The ad lists a Toshiba brand HD-DVD player model HD-A3 for a sales price of only $169 on Firday November 23 from 5 AM to 12 Noon. More info to come from K-Mart.

I did not know that! I knew about the Sears sale, but I had no idear that K-mart was HD-DVD exclusive.

Now, it's too bad a whole mess of them closed down in my area!

K-Mart has had a massive turnaround ever since they were saved by Sears. Every single one in my area was shabby, rundown, and an absolute mess inside beforehand. I think most of them are still open here and they're like completely new stores.

That's the same with the K-Mart here. It used to be how Wal-Mart currently is, a complete mess. The store now is really clean and like new inside. I go there occasionally.

The few K-Marts in my area also have been fully rehabiliated. They honestly have nicer stuff than Wal Mart now, especially with the boost of Craftsman and Kenmore labels.

I thought Kmart bought Sears, not vice versa. Kmart stores still in existence have been upgrading but not by me unfortunately. Even their SD DVD section is rather poor!

My local store carries about 8 BD titles. No HD DVD in sight.

LOL!
"Dirty" is the operative word there.
K-Mart pretty much burned it's bridges with it's old customers years ago by running the stores down to the ground they did. Not being snobbish here... but my wife and I haven't gone to a K-Mart in over five or six years I'd guestimate. There's a "Big" K-Mart in the town where I work, if I need something, I don't even consider that store. K-Mart has an uphill battle ahead of itself if they want to erase the "dirty store" stigma from the publics mind and attract new customers.
Truthfully, K-Mart is the last store on earth I'd think of shopping at when it comes to buying high end AV equipment.

I work at KMART. A couple years ago they were in bankruptcy. A new CEO took over closed alot of non-profitable KMART stores and sold property. Within 6 months of taking over KMART bought SEARS and changed KMART'S corporate name To Sears Holding which owns Sears. Slick move.

The local stores have gotten a lot better since the buyout. They used to be dirtier and nastier than Wal-Mart, but now look and feel a lot like Sears.

This seems very strange to me. I looked in the store by me and they had about 8 blu ray disks and not one HD. If they support the format wouldn't you think they would also carry the movies?

Yeah, they sell Blu-ray movies. Their current flyer has Spiderman 3 on BD listed for $6.99.

http://kmart.shoplocal.com/kmart/Default.aspx?action=browsepagelarge&storeid=2422511&rapid=469007&pagenumber=10

And they sell PS3's, so it's not exactly HD DVD exclusive unless you're just counting stand-alone players.

It's nice for HD DVD, but K-Mart is bad and I'll never shop there again.

At the local store by me, after they bought Sears, they basically took all the full time people (8-5) and did things to force them to quit so they wouldn't have to pay them higher salaries, benefits, etc. These were people who had been working there for over 10-15 years. For the women who had kids, they were told that they had to work the night shift. This gave them a few simple "I quit"s. They basically wanted a bunch of people who they could pay minimum wage rather than to pay their loyal workers an extra couple of bucks an hour. It may have been a smart business decision, but that's not the way to treat your employees. I wasn't one of them, but I worked there when I was younger and saw almost everyone either fired or forced to quit once the whole Sears thing happened.

I dont know if the same goes for the other stores, but it's complete BS.

IMHO it does mstter, because I believe Sears was the better company. K-mart just bought them for the name.

Agree that the hidef market at Kmart is likely quite small, but I would not completely discount this because:

1) there are 1,461 stores in operation - I found it surprising that this is actually just about 50 less than target.

sources:

http://www.kmartcorp.com/corp/story/general/kmart_glance.stm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation#Target_Stores

2) a kmart/sears hyrid has 2400 stores planned

That is pretty sad if true, but does not surprise me. I would hate to think what a higher salary at K-Mart is. This is the bottom line folks you take care of your workers and your workers take care of you.

Point well made. Who'll be the first to complain about picking up a HD DVD player at K-Mart for for dirt cheap???

I do agree that K-Mart did suck the few times I went inside one. I've never seen such bad customer service ever. Idiot cause me not to go back there anymore. But then again I've come across the same idiot at Wally World too. They know who they are.:D

I once had to wait about 30 minutes to be helped at their layaway desk once - and that was after going to a manager and complaining about the lack of help anywhere. I never went back since but not long after the place was changed into a Sears Grand. Until recently they had only carried Blu-Ray discs but I may check them out here this weekend and see if they finally will be stocking HD-DVDs.

LOL!

Truthfully, K-Mart is the last store on earth I'd think of shopping at when it comes to buying high end AV equipment.

Who said anything about High End? They're gonna be selling sub $200 HD DVD machines. That fits with their marketing style, and their normal customers. I don't think anybody goes to Kmart to drop 2-6 grand in a home system, but those on a budget, or looking for a holiday gift will find this appealing.

Wow, K-Mart is still open? I thought they were belly up, but I guess a cheap store only wants to deal with cheap products. Next thing we know Salvation Army and Goodwill will be HD-DVD exclusive!

With everybody bad mouthing K-Mart in my market area K-Mart almost always beats out Wal-Mart on everyday pricing for house hold goods.
And I just picked up a 19" Proscan brand 720P HD-TV LCD for $175.00 +tax
It may not have HDMI but for a home office it was a near perfect TV to replace a SD TUBE set.

I worked at a b k-mart 4 years ago up de and it was very clean with a nice electronic section. Lets do the math here guys 1500 kmarts and 3800 walmarts in the usa. Thats 5300 stores selling the a2 at a great price. This will reach not only us hd guys but also the average consumer.

but the shopers that go to k-mart are usaly on the low end of the income scale so buying a 30dollar hd disk is a little strech for them when they can get a dvd for 5 and plus to get a 1080p 42 in set it is at least 1300 bucks on sale and more like 1800bucks.

but i d need a 1080p tv in my lex that would be nice

According to Blu-ray insider Talkstr8t, K-Mart is not going HD DVD exclusive.

K-Mart NOT HD-DVD exclusive (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12088219&postcount=3324)

So far there has not been any independent public announcement to this effect, but Talkstr8t is convinced that soon there will be.

From my perspective, while it may be technically correct that K-Mart has not officially decided to sell HD DVD stand alone players exclusively, nevertheless if Blu-ray can't get their stand alone player pricing to approach the HD DVD players, this may all be a moot point. As we know typical K-Mart customers aren't going to be prone to paying four times the amount for an HDM player simply because its Blu-ray.

Man the blu boys are going everwhere trying to plug up the holes on the good ship BD. :) I don't see Kmart offering any BD players other than the PS3 unless Sony drops the price of their player by $400.

Like others, I haven't been to KaMe-apART in years... not that I wouldn't go there to buy HD DVDs if the pricing was decent.

You wouldn't have to worry about them being sold out on sale items since there are so few customers in the stores. I remember last Christmas Eve I stopped at my local Kmart after fighting the throngs of customers at other stores for hours. Kmart was a breeze, the place was a ghost town. The shelves were full but I still couldn't find anything I wanted to buy except for a couple of CDs.
