And I feel stupid for asking it. I have gone ahead and calibrated brightness, contrast, and RGB with HD DVD and the picture looks fantastic. I have about 980 hrs on the bulb, and it still looks spectacular (famous last words).

However, I'm having a problem I can't seem to dial out. It seems, for lack of a better term, that I get hotspotting in certain scenes. Whites seem overly bright and in one scene in The Robinsons (towards the end, when Frannie says that they'll adopt Lewis) I get the hotspotting on her face, but it's not white in that scene, more magenta. I probably need a picture to describe what I'm talking about.

My contrast seems fine, and even if I dial it down the hotspotting remains. I've also played with the RGB gain and bias, and that didn't do anything helpful with the issue. Then again, it could be source related and in the transfer itself.

Thoughts? Wild guesses?

Here's an image of what I'm talking about. It isn't my projector, but it is accurate regarding the issue:

See Frannie's face? How the area on the right of her face is overly bright and flat?

Take the color control down to zero and what do you see? I am guessing some shades of purple and green with some shades of black and white. This is related to panel degradation. You will need to send the PJ back to Sony for repair.

This problem is similar (actually the the same) as the Sony Green Blob issue on their SXRD RPTV line.

Turning the color control down to zero will tell you.

Let us know.

Gregg,

Thanks. I brought the color down to 0 and got straight black and white with no hint of color. So, that's good that I don't need to send it in.

However, I noticed that when I brought the color down from the calibrated 53 to 47, the artifact disappeared. So, should I leave that and check it against DVE? I wonder if the bulb is pushing this out of whack...

Anyway, I'll try to keep this like it is for now. I should note that this is in Sony's Wide color space and not normal.

Thanks again!

Ed

cool, good to hear.

Id leave the color at the lower setting and enjoy it.

The Sony FPs have a pretty weird implimentation of CMS. What you just experienced is part of that.

Happy viewing!
