View Full Version : Sony KD-36XS955 Interference(?) Problem
Tempest_2084 11-01-07, 11:30 AM I have a Sony KD-36XS955 that I got a few months ago. Overall I'm happy with it, except I'm noticing a weird issue with the picture. There appears to be a very faint "static" type pattern (snow if you will) that appears all over the picture. It's always there, but it's only really noticable wehen there's a large section of a single color. It's almost like an old analog signal that's got a little interference (ie. snow) but it's much much finer than that.
Normally the TV is getting a 720P or a 1080i signal from my PS3 via the HDMI port, although it was also there when I used component. Do I just have something configured wrong on my TV, or is there something wrong with it? I haven't looked to see if the problem is there on lower resolutions (480i/480P), but I can try that tonight.
I'm really bummed because other than this problem the picture is amazing!
RalphArch 11-01-07, 07:25 PM Your situation is not normal. I have never gone into the service menu - and most of my video settings are in the gray bar area of the menu (I use pro mode with clear edge of and advanced set to monitor.
But even when I screw around with the settings - such as going to vivid mode or raising the brightness all the way up I don't get any "snow"
Are you sure you are on the HDMI out and not the s-video (where I do get some snow)?
Other than that sounds like you have a problem with your set. Snow is not normal on a digital signal. Maybe pixelization, but not snow.
Maybe a problem with your source. Can you try feeding from something else or using the OTA ATSC tuner?
Tempest_2084 11-01-07, 11:50 PM I was just playing GH3 and I didn't notice the "static" problem, although it generally doesn't have large areas of a single color. I did notice the problem through my cable box though, but the box (some Motorola piece of crap) is pretty bad so that might not mean anything. Maybe it has something to do with the DVD output of the PS3?

Can't you try an OTA signal with a UHF antenna for your local digitals?
What's with "Motorola piece of crap" I assume that means you don't have digital service from cable but just analog.
If that is the case try hooking up the cable directly to the tv and see which (if any) clear QAM channels you can get with the set. (Normally the local broadcast channels at least - same as the OTA digital channels)
You won't have snow on a digital input.

Yes I just didn't get a chance to try that last night. I have to unhook the HD Cable box to do that.

No it's an HD Cable box.
You won't have snow on a digital input.
I realize that, that's why I don't think it's "snow". It's got to be some kind of signal defect. Snow was the closest thing I could think of to discribe it.
WJonathan 11-02-07, 08:39 PM Most of these Sony sets used modular boards for each input type, so if you're getting the interference through multiple inputs you can probably eliminate a bad component or HDMI board. Have you tried plugging in to another power outlet? (I know not easy with a 200 lb set).

No I never thought about pugging it into another outlet, what would that accomplish? I can easily enough though with an extension cord.
This whole issue is odd. I'm starting to wonder if it's the DVD's themselves. I'm noticing it REALLY bad on the Stargate SG1 DVD, but not at all on my Empire Strikes Back DVD (well expect where there actually IS snow). Maybe it's just a crappy DVD? I see it as well on my cable, but like I said, my HD Cable box is a piece of crap (the cable company technician even told me so).

This part doesn't make sense - even if your HD cable box is "a piece of crap" - if it passes a digital signal that signal is the same as everyone else in the world is seeing on your cable system as far as the TV goes. Maybe they do some compression to it but surely not as much as a satellite would do. And for most for like the local broadcast HDs you can't tell the difference whether its OTA or by satellite. I know I can't on my SONY.
Sounds like you may really have a problem with your TV, but I would try and ATSC signal first before calling for repair.
Persist-fix 11-05-07, 02:10 AM I have interference problem with Sony KV32V25 (noisy picture), which affects not only the original tv, but other tv in the house. There's "snow" on Sony on all the channels with different intensity, but on the other tv - only on ch.5 & 6. Interference does not go through the cable (it's disconnected). Interference is generated by the set itself, affects it and travels through the electrical wiring or RF (didn't pinpoint yet, but it's immaterial).
The interference started after I replaced FBT on Sony.
The service manual recommends to adjust R530 & R531 after such a repair. I have only 4V on TP-85 (suppose to be >18VDC. The interference looks like insufficient ground. Both R530 & R531 are in parallel and go to the ground.
Would any knowlegeable soul tell me if I lower the resistance of the above, would I be able to raise the voltage of test point TP-85 to over 18V and eliminate the interference?
PLEASE HELP!!! It'll be greatly appreciated!
