View Full Version : what's blu-ray doing to counter $89-99 players?
dildatonr 11-04-07, 09:06 PM From what I've been able to gather, there aren't any "$88-$99" HD-DVD players. I've only seen one ad from Walmart that will have HD-DVD players for $98 (AFTER a $100 discount!) for ONE DAY (Black Friday)...that's not a permanent price! On top of that, it's only certain stores, NOT all Walmarts!
Blu-Ray backers aren't running around, scared of these things. Like the old saying goes: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If anybody wants to watch HI-DEF movies on a sub-$100 player, they shouldn't expect much...
I got an A2 for my mother for $89 from Best Buy last Friday.
The A2 is a great entry level HDM player. That's why she asked me to get her one. My brother asked for a BR player and I got him a PS3. He also owns an A2 and loves it. Once again, being in denial about how much of a bargain that player is even at $190 is not going to help BR win. Although a lot of what you say sounds like BDA talking points, I can assure you they are not taking these events as lightly. BR needs an entry level HD player and they need one now. They could very well win without one, but they could also very well lose without one.
RabidRob 11-04-07, 09:48 PM I think the biggest shock to those buying these at Wal-Mart will be when they pull the player off the shelf and then head over to the $4.88 bin looking for their HD DVD movies.
"Nothing there...hmmm. Well I guess I can pick up Spiderman....what? Only Blu-ray? Fine, I'll take the Pirate movies....nope....ok Die Hard....nope....Pixar....nope....Bond...nope....Harry Potter set.....YES, it is here and it is....WHAT, the same price as the player? I think I'll just pick out 20 DVD's from the bin."
why do you assume people buying the players are stupid? thats like saying " I bought a ps3 so where is my high def copy of TRANSFORMERS??"
They are more reputable than the blogs and crap people keep on posting on here as links.. I mean come on there are a ton of links that people post that are Pro HD-DVD and Pro Blu-Ray.. Bill Hunt to name a few, so of the HD-DVD fan boys are still pissed at him because he took a side.... If AVS Forum was more Pro Blu-Ray which it is far from, they would be bitching about that as well. The New York Times is better than most of the BS in this place, including the invasion of HD-DVDers in the Blu-Ray forums. I mean you guys are so organized I bet you have a monthly meetings on how to take over posts in here. ;)
I dunno , they gave the iphone invention of the year , dispite all its faults that they listed and the fact that my 3 year old pda phone does everything the iphone does without most of the faults.
lilstinky 11-04-07, 09:56 PM I dont think a 200-300 million payout from Toshiba to Warner (ala the Paramount dirty deal) will happen this go around. When Warner elects to go Blu, you red-faced followers of the inferior hddvd format may want to spend some time over at the Blu-Ray site - - oh, nevermind, I see that many of you are here already!!!
Thats because we are smart and realize that both formats are equals. Only a stupid person would want to watch 28 Weeks Later in HD but watch Transformsers and Children of Men in 480p or upconverted. We also realize blind faith in a CE corporation to look out for our best interest is just plain stupid.
Gr00v3r 11-04-07, 11:56 PM How will Blu-Ray Respond? I think the 40 gig PS3 that was released on the 2nd is a good start and also they need to keep bringing the movies. I am looking forward to seeing what movies people buy for Christmas.
dildatonr 11-05-07, 07:01 AM the 40GB PS3 will be the 4th PS3 I've bought!

Both formats are impressive, but both are not equals. If they were equals, then I am sure there would not have been a fromat war in the forst place. The main thing with HD-DVD is that it is handicapped by storage space. This will hold it back in the long run and it is already holding them back now. HD-DVD has to go to tripple layers and still not match what BD can do are two layers. HD-DVD's dual layer is not much better than BD's single layer. Most people would prefer a medium with a strong single layer. At least it seems as if you are getting into newer technology.
bplewis24 11-05-07, 11:51 AM Have you ever been to Spokane? I think it would end your confusion.
My apologies to your friend.
lol, a buddy of mine moved to Spokane 2 years ago. After about a month in he was trying to figure out a way to move back. He has to finish school first though.

bplewis24 11-05-07, 11:55 AM You have proof of this? Such a large payout would have to be broken out in a company's quarterly financial statements. Have you seen the proof?
If no stop spreading FUD and linking to the New York Times as "proof"; they are not a reputable news organization anymore.
So you doubt it actually happened?

Sorry but they are equals imo. Blu has some benefits over HD and vice versa. They both look and sound amazing on my setup. Transformers is the best sounding new format movie I have imo and its not a lossless(I'm not a huge sound person though) track. Amazing sounding from beginning to end.
zinfamous 11-05-07, 01:17 PM It's threads like this that make me sad that I am currently 100% Blu Ray. that A2 can't get here soon enough ;)
BluRayFreak 11-05-07, 02:34 PM For the record, I am bi-format (HD-XA1 and Sony BDP-S300).
I do agree that Blu-Ray needs an entry-level machine, but I doubt that is going to make anybody win any 'war'.
I just read that Best Buy has the A3 and 10 movies for $199. I just can't see Sony doing anything like that...
I got an A2 for my mother for $89 from Best Buy last Friday.
The A2 is a great entry level HDM player. That's why she asked me to get her one. My brother asked for a BR player and I got him a PS3. He also owns an A2 and loves it. fleetwoodguy79 11-05-07, 03:24 PM Sony is too arrogent to release a player below or even at cost. They've done this with every single proprietary format they've ever released! "PAY MORE BECAUSE ITS SONY!"
That used to be they're marketing campaign... Consumers got smart and don't trust that just because its "Sony" doesn't mean its "Better".
I all I know is that someone on the BRD side had better get a player announced at $199 or less QUICK, and I mean like 2 weeks QUICK.
The HD-DVD $98 was hyped for about a week, and EVERYONE who cared about emerging technologies was talking about it. Not to mention, half of the people in my department rushed out that morning to pick one up. BRD needs that kind of hype and support to give a blow back to HD-DVD. The $399 PS3 will NOT cut it.

That is absolutely hysterical concerning your comment about "HD-DVDers" being "organized."....after all..
1. BD has the BD.com website
2. BD Festival
3. BD slogans
4. BD parties
:rolleyes::eek:

I thought it was common knowledge Sony has been selling the PS3 below cost for some time.

The PS3 is primarily a GAME system. Right now they're trying to battle the 360 and the Wii which are handing it to them because of price... It's no shocker the 40GB PS3 is helping Sony sell consoles now that it is almost the price of a 360 with an HDMI port...
I'm talking standalone players here.

Well you did say "player". and I realize it's a GAME system. Thanks for the caps by the way. But many of us have bought a PS3 as our BR stand alone player. and I imagine a good chunk of non-avs consumers have done the exact same thing. It's a game machine and a stand alone player. I know it's a new, complex and often confusing paradigm of consumer electronics but I think we can all adjust.
I understand that a large reason why Sony reduced the price on the PS3 was to remain competitive with MS and Nintendo. But they are selling it at below cost. and they could conceivably apply the business practice with one of their 2nd Gen "Non PS3" BR players to remain competitive against HD DVD. I agree that it's probably not in their game plan.
But it has nothing to do with greed. It's business. Every business plan is about greed. Every single thing any CE manufacturer does comes down to greed. Some jsut go about it differently.
According to the News Only thread in the HD Software forum, Sony is planning to run Blu-Ray hardware promotions in conjuntion with HDTV sales this holiday season. I'm assuming this means either, "get a free Blu-Ray player with the purchase of an HDTV" or "get a Blu-Ray player at xx% discount when you purchase an HDTV."
