Will a standard def. calibration disc work(for contrast and brightness only) with my HD DVD player? Or will the settings be way off? I'm wondering if I should buy the DVE-HD disc now or wait for the new one or Avia HD. Thanks.

Grayscale matches between SD and HD, so yes a DVD is fine for contrast and brightness.

So, SD calibration disks may be used to calibrate grayscale, brightness and contrast for HD players/display, right?
I guess this wouldn't be the case in calibrating primaries/secondaries. What do your think?

I have tested and compared both GetGrey and HD DVD DVE and found no discerned issue between the two dics for color calibration.

Then why even buy the HD version? Is everybody wasting their money?

Greetings
Sometimes it is close and sometimes there are more noticeable differences. YMMV. That's why it's a good idea to check ... as it just isn't always the same ... in fact, in my experience ... there are enough differences most of the time to need to look at both sides.

If you've just bought an A-2, I recommend going to Toshiba's website and downloading the firmware update for your player (2.5). Burn it to CD and run it on the player. The early firmwares had an issue with crushed blacks, which can affect your viewing experience and properly setting the brightness. Early firmware versions had issues with using the Ethernet port, so you may or may not be able to connect it directly to the Internet and update it that way. Either way, both issues should be resolved with the newer firmware.

The HD-A2 supports Photos, so use the Test Slates I created at http://www.xyhd.tv/slates
I noticed that it was impossible to get the black levels right on the HD-A3 if I had Enhanced Color or Enhanced Black Levels on. This shouldn't suprise me but I thougt I'd mention it here.
I don't have an A2 to try.

And to your question about SD for HD. NO. The Two have different color spaces 608 vs 709. The Xbox 360 honors the color space difference when play SD vs. HD, so you could use an SD to a limited degree for HD, but you'd not be certain to have perfect calibration.
The Toshiba doesn't seem to honor color space differences.
This leaves you in a situation where you have to determine if you what HD or SD to look right.
