View Full Version : 50 gig is just right for hd
ElfenLied 11-01-07, 09:50 PM if 1080p is 4 times the rez of 480i then if you had a 8.5gig dl dvd then to put that same movie on a bluray you would need a 34gig disk.
also lets say in 2-5 years the tv rez will be at 2160 or 4320 then if you added a layer to the bluray and got a better codec to compress the data you will have a forward product with can be upgraded in the futhure. all you get if you add a layer to hd dvd is a 51 gig disk that is the same as a bluray
You can't magically upgrade your BD players to output at 2160 or 4320 or whatever other magical number aside from what its rated at currently. Its funny how you are trying to dream reasons to assuage your own conscience concerning your purchase. There's no need to do this, there are plenty of good reasons that your BD player currently is perfectly fine for watching movies on.

What color is the sky in your world? I am pretty sure that 1080 is not going anywhere. Anything beyond that is getting a little unnecessary. Maybe in like 30 years, but definately not 2-5.
ElfenLied 11-01-07, 10:10 PM i am not saying your player can suport it but if you add layers to the br disk you can use it for a higher res format all you would need is a chip that can do the highre rez and read a tripple layer or quad one. i am just saying the disk size is right for todays hd and has promise for tomarrows too.

Tomorrows HD and todays HD will be the same....I promise.
Kram Sacul 11-01-07, 10:15 PM The bandwidth would have to increase to keep up with the massive datarates of whatever "Super HD" format come along (kind of doubt it though). By that time downloads should be the norm with no need for discs. Of course some will want to archive those downloads and 100 or 200gb BD-Rs would come in handy.

:rolleyes:Another reason AVS should suspend registrations (or at least have a skill testing question of some kind).

ocd_guy 11-02-07, 10:16 AM It's simply a marketing numbers game, just look at digital point and shoot cameras....who the hell needs 12 megapixels??? What a waste of hard drive / memory media space and for what???
Same goes for HD, 1080i is good, with 1080p being only a minor improvement.

not being an english major is fine, but having less grammar skills than a 10yr old is hard to understand when said person has a degree in anything. typos aside, using too where a two should be and the lack of punctuation makes posts hard and annoying to read.
unless of course english isnt your native language.
darwin316 11-02-07, 11:00 AM current gen: hd dvd and blu-ray

You have a degree in electronics and you actually believe all it takes is adding an extra chip? Also, how did you make it through the university with writings skills below the 4th grade level?

Elfen, there is a computer component that has something to do with electronics. Its called a keyboard. If you could, please look for two buttons. The first one is called the 'shift' button. Two buttons to the left of that is the 'period' button. These buttons are very important, and can go a long way in fixing terrible grammar, even for a kindergartner. I suggest you learn how to use them.
theirishgonzo 11-02-07, 04:02 PM dude no you replace the output chip with sothing that can prosess the new rez and with new codec the bandwith might be enough. and lets think going from i to p dubbles your lines of scan so that will dubble your data and that is dubble the rez
