View Full Version : Ive had PS3 for 10 months, want to try bluray
petes67bird 11-01-07, 10:58 PM Hi I am new to this side of the forums. I have had a PS3 since New Years 2007. The only Blu Ray title I have watched is Halloween because I bought that as it was one of my all time favorites. My setup is my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my 57" Toshiba DLP 1080P television with onkyo SR-501 receiver and Infitity Kappa series 5.1 surround. I would first like to say that Halloween was clearer than compared to a standard DVD but it didnt wow me, I could have watched it either way. What Blu Ray disc should I buy that would just show me what blu ray is capable of. Is it something like the Planet Earth series or more of the disney type titles. I have heard so much hype about how blu ray will look, that I am interested in going out and buying a movie. I just want to see something in 1080P that will make me feel that I got the best for my money. Thanks Peter
makingmusic476 11-01-07, 11:00 PM A few of my favs in terms of PQ:
Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2
Spiderman 3
Underworld
Kingdom of Heaven
Apocalypto and POTC: Dead Man's Chest are easily the best examples of Wow HD that I've seen on BD.
Also, please check out the Tier sticky:

Filipinoyakuza 11-01-07, 11:04 PM In no particular order or ranking:
1. Corpse Bride
2. POTC: Dead Man's Chest
3. Casino Royale
4. Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer
5. Black Hawk Down
6. Speed
7. Spiderman 1, 2, & 3
8. The Prestiege
sunstar715 11-01-07, 11:04 PM the pirates movies
spider-man 3
meet the robinsons
fantastic four 2
These are a few, but also next week, ratatouille release, which is almost guaranteed to be a excellent release, seeing as robinsons was excellent, lol
BStecke 11-01-07, 11:05 PM Halloween is actually quite good . . . it's a 30 year old movie and looks like it could've been shot two years ago. Casino Royale is another good one, though, as is Crank.
petes67bird 11-01-07, 11:09 PM I didnt say Halloween was bad, but it just didnt give me the WOW factor. I did see an improvement in the PQ but not to where I felt it was jumping out of my TV. So if you guys had only one movie where you had to chose based and PQ and terms of it being a good movie, which one should I pick up. Thanks for the replies Peter J.
SuprSlow 11-01-07, 11:41 PM Crank is much maligned around here sometimes, but the sharpness and clarity of the picture is most definately something that will show off some of the capabilities of Blu-ray. It was the first title I bought, and I'd recommend it.
Like someone else said, check out the Tier Thread and see what interests you from Tier 0 and Tier 1, those will all look fantastic.

shadowrage 11-02-07, 01:49 AM Without BDs what have you been doing with it for 10 months?
But if you really want to blow your mind with HD picture and audio: Black Hawk Down.
bdshort 11-02-07, 02:47 AM You've had your PS3 for 10 months, hooked via HDMI to a 57" 1080p display, and you've only JUST tried Blu-ray?! What's wrong with you?!
I'd join Netflix, and start renting everything recommended here, and all the movies in the tier thread that you like. If you don't want to buy, that is.
But I find it hard to believe you've never watched a Blu-ray till just now with that setup... crazy!
Rockydog 11-02-07, 09:57 AM Crank, TMNT, POTC: DMC, Corpse Bride. Crank is probably my most used for reference though.
ryoohki 11-02-07, 11:09 AM LOL Halloween was filmed 30 years ago by a private company and it look better than a LOT of 1980's movie on HDM right now ;)
Why people need picture that jump the screen again?
iamitman 11-02-07, 11:16 AM spiderman 3
petes67bird 11-02-07, 02:04 PM Yes I know it has taken awhile. I have been just playing Resistance and Madden when I had a chance. Just bought a new house and was doing alot of remodeling and really didnt have time to sit down and watch movies just yet. I am finally all settled in, my rottweiler pup is calming down a bit at 5 months to allow me to actually watch something on tv, and I am gonna buy a disc on saturday to try it out. From what alot of people have said on here, Spiderman 3 and POTC 3 seem to be the best bet. Do you think I should wait for the Die Hard Live Free or Die Hard, or just pick up one of the two movies that I listed. Thanks Peter
ckenisell 11-02-07, 03:18 PM Pick 'em up man! PICK 'EM UP!!!
EnterTheSwamp 11-02-07, 03:34 PM Apocalypto is the best movie I have seen thus far. I have seen probably 30 movies though.

he has been using his PS3 for what it was designed for like 80% of PS3 owners out there. Playing Games
ckenisell 11-02-07, 04:10 PM he has been using his PS3 for what it was designed for like 80% of PS3 owners out there. Playing Games
Are you saying it wasn't designed for playing Blu-Ray movies?
petes67bird 11-02-07, 05:06 PM I know this may shock some of you, but I am not a fan of Blu Ray or HD DVD. I am a playstation fan, I had PS, PS2 and now PS3. I would have bought the PS3 regardless if it had a high definition player or not, it was not a selling point for me. Now since I already have the blu ray, I am not interested in HD DVD because I recieved a free BLU RAY player when I bought PS3 so I am all set now. Now I want to see what the buzz has been about with BLU RAY. So I want to go out and pick up 1 movie, just one. The initial question was if you had to choose to have one BLU RAY movie based on PQ and Content which would it be. I am now considering the Planet Earth series because that could be something you watch a few times. I dont want to buy something watch it once and let it sit. Thanks Peter
ccotenj 11-02-07, 05:09 PM pete, go to blockbuster and rent casino royale...
good transfer, good sound, good movie...
crank is a nice transfer, but it is a lousy movie...

I too bought my PS3 as a gaming machine, but it quickly switched roles and turned into a BD player first, games second. I'm on BD number 25 and game number 4 :)
Planet Earth is good eye candy and it's good demo material, but for sharpness, clarity, and a "wow" factor from anybody that views it, I'd suggest Crank. Plus, being a little cheaper than PE helps, too :)
ckenisell 11-02-07, 05:13 PM Yeah, Planet Earth is NOT the best gauge of picture quality. They dumbed it down to fit on HD-DVD too.
I don't know, PE is pretty great looking and a fantastic series to boot. However Galapgos is even better but it's a bit boring.
I suggest looking at the tier list and picking up your favourite titles. While it's nice to get some demo material, what's the point if it's something you don't really like?
makingmusic476 11-03-07, 03:49 AM You've had your PS3 for 10 months, hooked via HDMI to a 57" 1080p display, and you've only JUST tried Blu-ray?! What's wrong with you?!]

I wonder how many more like him there are. There are probably enough HDTV owners in the ps3 install base to destroy HD DVD right now, but they aren't buying discs. :(
ResOGlas 11-03-07, 03:54 AM I'd recommend Halloween.
...Oh, wait. :p
YONEXSP 11-03-07, 11:29 AM Yeah, Planet Earth is NOT the best gauge of picture quality. They dumbed it down to fit on HD-DVD too.
No they didn't!
As the Natures Jouney discussion proved, Bit rate makes Sweet F all difference. This is FUD, and spreading this to a new user of BD is quite disingenuous. Also the BBC production Planet Earth was spectacular in nboth formats.
In fact they dumped it down for BD as they did not include ant PiP, Interactivity etc as BD did not and still does not support it. Not trying to start a fight here, but FUD like that deserves rebuttle.
For the WOW!!! factor, The Wild is the best I've seen.
Dan Hitchman 11-03-07, 12:38 PM Spidey 3
POTC 1&2
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City (the 24/96 resolution TrueHD track is awesome too)
Pre-order Cars and the Rat movie from PIXAR (they will probably blow any and all current animated films out of the water).
Apocalypto looks great, but still has that shot on HD video vibe (digital video is getting better, but video cams still have a long way to go). The movie was needlessly brutal and gory (yes, we get that the Aztecs were bloodthirsty-- move on) and the story was as simple and banal as you could go. Watch once and discard. Mel Gibson is twisted. If you want to watch a "natives in the jungle" movie of substance watch The Mission. Spectacular and moving. If you want an action/chase movie then Predator and The Fugitive are far better.
