View Full Version : Quality of new CRTs

What kind of quality should be expected from new CRTs? Should they be of better quality than CRTs that were made seven years ago?

The reason that I'm asking is that I recently exchanged a new CRT because it had moire on the sides. The replacement is the exact model but seems to have some sort of pincushioning thing going on. The pincushioning is on the bottom and top, not the sides. It's mostly noticable when watching something in widescreen or with one of those scrolling news bars on the bottom. I don't recall the defective one having this pincushioning. I'm sure I would've noticed it.

I'm not particularly happy with this but I suppose it's better than the moire. I don't remember having issues with defective TVs like this years ago. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Maybe the quality isn't supposed to be perfect. Or maybe the quality isn't supposed to be perfect nowadays.

Any thoughts?

I know I do expect too much out of what I buy. I expect everything to be perfect. Even if it's some $1, dollar store piece of junk.

What is the brand and model # of the TV you are asking about? This info is very much needed!

New CRT quality has definitely gone down because it's not any company's priority anymore. The last great CRT was the Sony XBR970. Those ended in 2006 sometime.

Wouldn't that be easy to fix?

The TV is a Sanyo 27" - HT27547. There really weren't many choices for CRTs.

If it requires opening the TV and messing around with the insides then no, it wouldn't be easy. I don't do do that stuff.

Actually, I'm not sure that what I'm seeing is pincushioning. I'm going to try to take a picture and post it here. It may be a day or two though.

It's kind of long, but might be interesting. Somewhere in there it will undoubtedly discuss how to get in the service menu to adjust the geometry. You don't need to take off the back, just enter some code with your remote and make adjustments using various buttons.

Make sure you write down your original setting before changing anything and you should be OK.
