I was just wondering, Disney uses their own name for DVDs. They call them "Disney DVD".

In all their commercials they call them Disney DVD. "Only On Disney DVD", "Own It On Disney DVD", etc..etc..

Pick up any Disney movie on DVD and you will not see the official DVD logo, but you will see a "Disney DVD" logo. They make it sound like it's their own format and that Disney DVD is better than a regular DVD for some reason.

I was wondering when and if Disney would go the same route for Blu-Ray and call them Disney Blu-Ray. Ditch the Blu-Ray logo and create their own logo.

I'm surprised the DVD Association lets Disney do this to DVD. Would the BDA let Disney do this?

EDIT: Just checked my "Disney DVDs" and noticed that newer titles now show the real DVD logo on the back. A lot of their older DVDs didn't have the logo.

Disney probably is not worried about this for Blu-ray. Why? A competing studio is not directly benefiting from their Blu-ray discs sales.

What you have discovered with the "Disney DVD" is the compromise that was reached between WB and Disney in order to get Disney in the DVD game. See, the little secret no one remember is that Warner gets paid for every standard DVD logo.

That was part of WB received as a member of the BDA. They we're very chummy with Toshiba at the time everything for DVD was finalized, and I believe Warren Leiberfarb, who was the head of WHV at the time swung that deal.
