View Full Version : Any projector developments in the LED world?
Lately as my projector has been aging, I am becoming more and more disheartened with the inevitable purchase of a brand new bulb. Call me cheap, ungrateful, or hypocritical, but I just didn't think 2 thousand hours would pass by so quick.
A few years ago I had read that an LED based projector was the current focus. Have there been any recent breakthroughs in that department?
Also for those of you who have seen the Pioneer Kuro, doesn't it make you a little jealous on the inside. Has there been any news of a Front PJ that will come close to that mindblowing picture?

Not at all. High Definition doesnt really shine untill u reach way larger screens than 60"
I do love those TV`s though, but id chose Front projection over that any day of the week. Ill setle for Kuro in the bedroom.

I use a Kuro and find it to be outstanding, but I can also say that there are currently a number of PJs out there that can match or better the Kuro for PQ.
Well one of the main reasons I am interested in an LED projector is lamp life. You'd be surprised at how quickly those numbers dwindle down. I own an HD1000, I've already went through one bulb and am 459 hours in on the second. Yowzah!
Phil Olson 11-02-07, 01:00 PM Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while but I take it that the Kuro is an LED based DLP RP?
If so, does the speed of the LED's finally kill rainbows? If that's the case then I'd be interested in one for my bedroom as well.
Thanks

inky blacks 11-02-07, 02:34 PM The laser companies keep saying they will have laser projectors soon, like late 07 or 08. They should beat LEDs in brightness and colors. The e-mail I received from one company rep said over 1,000 lumens in the first generation of serious laser home theater projectors. I think they are diode laser units in RBG. Lifespan is long and cooling needs are minimal, so they should be very quiet machines. But then, it's all talk until you actually see a working product.

Are the rumors regarding concerns about consumers looking into the light path from the lasers valid? If so what's being done about that? The post above is very promising, if indeed it is that close. Late 07 seems very unlikely given it is already late 07 and we haven't seen anything close to what is mentioned above, but perhaps late 08... ?
In addition to no bulb aging and grayscale drifting with lasers / LEDs I am also very much looking forward to the "instant on" nature of these alternative bulbs and the freedom to flip the pj on and off at will, even if just turning it on for a few minutes to catch the tail end of a game, etc without having to worry about shorting the bulb expectancy.
inky blacks 11-03-07, 12:26 PM Using lasers to light up DLPs, LCDs or LCOS will produce the same danger or safety level as using an ordinary bulb. It is not a good idea to look directly into any intense light source, laser or not.
Mitsubishi was supposed to start selling laser driven DLP RPTVs this Christmas, but that may have been delayed a bit. We can hope a laser projector by 08 or sooner, but history shows that delays in production and design work can stall any project. Akai has been announcing that it will have LED driven DLP RPTVs for sale for years, but that "soon" has still not arrived.

ivo welch 11-07-07, 07:47 PM ahhmmm...are there any laser FPTV in the works? I have only heard of the Mitsu RPTV on the immediate horizon...

inky blacks 11-07-07, 11:13 PM There are several laser suppliers. All the manufacturers are just awaiting an effective laser RBG product. They all will switch to lasers when they become available. As I said, the laser company I spoke to said soon, like 2008. Companies are not going to talk about it until it is in their financial interest to do so. For now, they want to keep quiet because they want people to buy their current bulb projectors.
