Now that standalone players are on par or cheaper than the add-on how will MS respond?

Huh? Why would they need to respond? Wouldn't this be a question for Blu-Ray and what they are going to do(and actually already doing).

I think he's saying 'if I can walk into a store and get a standalone HD-DVD player for $99, why on earth would I pay $179 for an addon that requires a xbox next to it?

That isn't the case. The standalones (A2's) are being discontinued. Best Buy and Walmart are getting it out of the way so they can sell out. Nothing new here. So no the add-on(even though you still need a 360 to use it and the cost is the same or more depending on model compared to standalones but that wasn't the point to begin with) is actually still the cheaper buy because the new models A3 $299.99, A30 $399.99, and the A35 $499.99. Best Buy did fullfill online customers with the A3 for the price of $99.99 because they had an overflow of customers trying to get the A2 which was out of stock. Thats why I said what does the add-on need to do at this point compared to the standalones. They just offered 7-9 free movies including Heroes Season 1 last week and that moved over 200,000 units alone. The BB and Walmart were those stores decisions to do that not Toshiba.

Yet both Circuit City and Best Buy now sell the A3 for $199 with 2 movies in the box, and additional 2 free movies of your choice to pick and of course the 5 free mail-in rebate.

Yes, I think Microsoft will discount the price for the 360 HD DVD addon before Christmas. I think they will do this in response to the "new" selling price of the A3.

The thing I like about the Internet is that I can go to BB's website to see what they have on sale. It's really quite amazing.

Page 8 of this week's BB ad "when you buy any HD DVD player GET 8 FREE HD DVD MOVIES thru Nov 10 **5 by mail** plus, any 3 more instantly***

At CC I believe it is only for the A30 and you get 10 movies: 5 by mail, 3 in store, and 2 in the box with the player.

The only reason I personally think anyone would want the 360 add-on HD DVD drive Vs a standalone is TV inputs. I have both of my HDMI and both of my Component inputs being used, so the 360 add-on would be nice to have... But it's too expensive at this point.

I don't plan on getting a HD disc player of either standard until one wins, tho.
