I have installed a ReadNas NV+ on my home Network and loaded it with 500 GB's of music files from (850)ripped CD's (my personal collection). When I open I-tunes, the NAS is listed under Shared as "Itunes Server," but when I click on it, nothing appears. I also have a Sonos system running and the Sonos sees the NAS, I am able to browse my music files on the NAS, play them, etc -- no problem. How can I get the music files from the NAS to appear in Itunes? The NAS is listed under shared, but the files don't appear.

I have one other problem as well; I had the files on an external hard drive and I copied them to the NAS by clicking and dragging the entire library from the hard drive to the NAS -- both on my desktop. Then, I ripped 12 more CD's to my Mac Book Pro's hard drive, clicked and dragged it to the NAS on the desktop and now, when I click on the NAS icon, all it shows are the 12 CD's recently added where formerly it showed the 850 CD's in the original 500GB file.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

The ReadyNAS doesn't rebuild the iTunes Library very often. After placing files on the drive you will probably want to force a rescan through the console. Also, with large collections of songs, it can take awhile for iTunes to download the library contents. Have you added more memory to the NAS? The ReadyNAS ships with only 256mb and with a collection that large I would recommend upgrading to 1GB. The ReadyNAS firmware betas offer better performance for the streaming services. Infrant/Netgear is up to Beta 8 and it's working quite well. I expect it to be the release candidate.

Also.... download the log files from the ReadyNAS (available through the console). There should be specific log files for the service that is sharing your media files via iTunes. It may contain useful bits of info.

rsbeck - I don't use a NAS, but many here do; In iTunes, did you add the files via 'Add to Library' under the Files menu...?

Whoops - cross post with Andrew - sorry...

Ok, I've done a bit more research. Are you running Leopard?

The iTunes server that the ReadyNAS is running is the Firefly Media Server. There are reports that the release versions of Firefly are not working well with Leopard. The nightly builds of Firefly are working. My NAS which is has firmware 4.0 beta 8 installed comes packaged with a Firefly built with source from 'svn-1676'. Which means that it's source pulled from the subversion source repository at revision #1676. Currently Firefly is up to revision 1696. I have a feeling that we'll need an update to Firefly before the ReadyNAS is working with the latest and greatest iTunes.

fyi, my iTunes can not see my music on my NAS either. SCRATCH THAT. My iTunes can see my NAS, it took a loooong time for my NAS to perform it's initial media scan. It's also taking iTunes a loooong time to download the library from the NAS.

I have a Mac Book Pro with 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz SDRAM running 10.4.10. The ReadyNas is 3 TB with 1 GB Ram. I have started a rescan. I found out why I could only see the most recent 12 CD's I ripped. There was a file among the 12 that contained the other 850 CD's. I have now combined the 12 and the 850 so I can see them all when I click on the NAS icon on my desktop. Still, I see "Itunes Server" under "Shared," but when I click on it, nothing appears. Instead, I have selected the Network Storage as the source under Itunes Preferences and deselected "Add Files to Library" so the files can live on the server instead of on the internal drive of my laptop, similar to what I did when I used the External USB Hard Drive as my source. Then, I clicked on the entire 862 CD File and dragged it to the main "Music" window (under "Library") in Itunes. It will take awhile for all of the titles to be added. Can anyone see a problem with this? Thanks for the help guys.

Still, I see "Itunes Server" under "Shared," but when I click on it, nothing appears.

How long do you wait for things to show up? I have 13K songs in my library and it takes 3-5 minutes for iTunes to retrieve the listing. If you look in the iTunes display it will have a progress-ish bar indicating that it's still downloading the catalog.

Instead, I have selected the Network Storage as the source under Itunes Preferences and deselected "Add Files to Library" so the files can live on the server instead of on the internal drive of my laptop

That's how I do things on my main mac. It's much faster that way, and that mini is connected via gigabit ethernet to my NAS. The mini in the bedroom is connected wirelessly and it's slow to retrieve the song listing via the NAS or from the other mini.

I have somewhere between 850 and 900 CD's ripped to my NAS. I waited a long time, a few days, and the songs never appeared under the (NAS's) Itunes Server listing under Shared in my itunes.

When I used to open the song files from an external hard drive to itunes it took awhile, but everything seems to take a lot longer over the Network, even though I, too, have gigabit so it is taking quite awhile.

If this approach works, and it sounds like it should -- the songs are scrolling by on the progress-ish bar to which you referred -- the only thing that seems weird is that I have other computers in the house that appear under the Shared heading and the songs from those come up when I click on them, my ipod appears when I plug it in and the songs open right up, but nothing comes up when I click on the NAS there. The NAS is still listed under Shared, but to see those songs, I will have to click on the main library. Whatever works, I guess.

I just thought it would be easier since the first part, having itunes see the NAS and list it under Shared, was so easy. I thought I could use my main library for songs ripped to my computer's hard drive. A lot of times I like to organize the files before loading them to an external hard drive or NAS.

It appears that Leopard's design is that it does not back-up to NAS. This is per BusinessWeek's Tech & You column on 12 November 2007 as well as other Internet searches. A genius at the local Apple store told me the same thing this morning. This may be related to the problems you are experiencing.
