View Full Version : Playing HD-DVD's on a MAC
JoshFink 11-03-07, 01:01 PM I'm wondering if this is possible. I have a bunch of my HD-DVD's ripped to my Hard Drive that I play back under Vista with PowerDVD. Would it be possible to play these back with DVD Player or something similar on my Mac?
Thanks
Josh
Andrew67 11-03-07, 02:54 PM Maybe VLC.
JoshFink 11-03-07, 03:27 PM Not that I've found. I've been playing with VLC all morning and no luck so far.

MacHound 11-07-07, 08:13 PM Just a long-shot idea, but did you try installing Perian (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30931) and Niceplayer (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23617) yet?
Any idea in which codec your HD-DVD files are stored? (MPEG2, H.264?)

Nice Player is merely a quicktime front-end. The best bet is one of the nightlies of VLC.
MacHound 11-08-07, 12:09 AM Nice Player is merely a quicktime front-end. The best bet is one of the nightlies of VLC. True... Perian is a collection of open source QT codecs. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to give Perian / NP it a try and report back. Like I said before, it's a bit of a long shot. Perian is still pretty new. It was still in early beta versions when it was used by AppleTV hackers several months ago to add features Apple never intended.

Sorry, Andrew, but that is not true about Niceplayer. It comes standard with three "plugins": one, as you said, for QT, another for DVDplayer and a third for CoreVideo. There is also an Xine plugin which supports DivX, XviD, HDTV streams (saved to disk), etc., however, I am not sure whether this plugin works yet on the Mactel platform.

So it's a UI for multiple frameworks, none of which support playing HD-DVD's. NicePlayer is a UI, no matter how you slice it. Nothing more, nothing less.

It may not have its own playback engine, however it is a much better UI than most of the other programs have. For example, it is the only DVD player I have found that will let me change audio and subtitle languages during playback.
But, as for playing back HD-DVDs, we both know it's still not possible on a Mac with any program. If Apple ever starts selling HD via the iTunes store, maybe we'll see something. However, in the meantime, it doesn't look like there is a big competition to be the first company to bring hardware or software playback to the Mac. And, has already been discussed in another thread, many of us are not so interested until the format war is settled and the use of DRM is modified.
MacHound 11-08-07, 02:44 PM But, as for playing back HD-DVDs, we both know it's still not possible on a Mac with any program. Yes, however I was responding to the O.P. who stated he ripped his HD-DVDs to HD. Presumably there's no DRM associated with these rips (:D) so it might be a straightforward matter of playing H.264 or MPEG2 content. That's why I thought Perian / Niceplayer might be worth a try.

So, if you have other material in h.264, I don't see why it wouldn't play. I don't know if the HD-DVD rips are compatible, though.
Ted Todorov 11-09-07, 12:44 PM A lot of HD-DVDs are VC1, (from Microsoft, which is one reason MS is pushing HD-DVD over Blu-ray). I don't think any Mac software plays VC1 -- does it?

I have been going round with this for some time have an Imac and discovered after plugging in the xbox hd drive and upgrading anydvd to hd version that anydvd could not remove the hdcp compliance issue with intel based systems so when ever i try and play a dvd in the drive it fails. heh ho and i have hunted for a solution to play in osx as this is what i would prefer to do but alias none seems to be apparent. i have come to the conclusion that the developers of this wonderful software and hardware must think that osx users dont want an out of the tin solution for watching HD movies.

Don't know about now, but it will have to when they add blu-ray support, as it is also a mandatory codec for that format.

analogue900 11-09-07, 03:15 PM VC1 should be supported by ffmpeg (http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/) and by mplayer. See the other thread about EVO playback in this forum:

According to this, it's doable to some extent, though without AC3 sound, if I read correctly.... bummer.

What I can't figure out is if it's possible to get any sound at all? Do I have to specify arguments for each DVD ??
