I've been endlessly looking over this forum, as well as other websites, to see which 27 inch crt would be best for me. However, there are so many to choose from. Being a college student with expenses, I think a standard 27 inch crt best would suit my needs. Any suggestions?

The TV must:

-Be able to play a Play Station 2 well
-Last a long time (3 years maybe)
-Have excellent picture quality when displaying DVDs or satellite connection
-Have decent sound (not as important as picture)
-HD capability is welcomed but not a necessity
-Be in the $300-$400 range

Thanks for all the replies

i know this is a CRT forum, but it seems like the CRT's being built these days are time bombs that are designed to last only days beyond their factory warranty.

My brother bought an open-box 16:9 27" Sharp LCD HDTV for $399. It has an RGB input for using it as a computer monitor, plus a HD and analog tuners, HDMI, 2 component inputs, S-video, and composite.

HD programs look really nice, and the viewing angles are fine. I don't really see a bad thing about the set, except 4:3 SD programs don't look all that great, but that's about the only bad thing I noticed.

Hopefully his set will last awhile, but TBH, these new CRT's are absolute junk (from what I have seen) and I can't really recommend them at this point in time. If they were a little more durable, maybe, but durability does not seem to be their strong suit.

Try looking on local selling sites near you or cragslist. Just type in the city or state you live in and you should find some sites for cheap tvs (usually).

I saw that one. It appears ok but I've noticed that these HDTV CRTS often gives a lot of issues. If you check out user reviews at bestbuy.com: many people are saying that it looks good in HD but standard television looks horrible.

CRTs seem to be made with lower quality than LCDs and plasmas when HD technology is included. It seems manufacturers are only interested in putting out solid HD technology for TVs outside the CRT realm.

With how expensive the new lcd's with 120ghz and other new technology these days, i'de rather wait another 1-3 years before even thinking of buying one. The ghosting and other problems happen too much and end up having to be replaced more then what I read about the last of the Sony crt tv's. But if you still don't want to, you could get a Vizio for pretty cheap even tho the specs can't compare to Toshiba, Samsung, or Sony . But make sure to get an extended warranty even with how long it takes to get out of the bullshit. You end up getting your money you paid put into credit to buy a new tv or they give you a newer model of the tv you bought .

Yeah, good point. If you do get a CRT, get a good price and use the money you save to buy an extended warranty.

People seem pleased with the Sharp CRTs still sold, I think they're 27".

Which model are you speaking of? Looking on bestbuy and amazon, users are not too happy with their 27 inch Sharp sets.

After doing much research, I’ve narrowed it down to three TVs:

Sony 27 FD Trinitron WEGA TV - KV-27FS320

This TV is getting great reviews but a user said that videogame systems look blurry while using it.

__________

Toshiba 27AF45 27

Also got strong reviews but some are complaining that it broke after about one year of usage.

__________

Toshiba 27A45 - 27" CRT TV

This is the only one that has gotten almost perfect reviews. But it hasn't received as much reviews as the other two.

Has anyone had experience any of these or would like to provide further information regarding any of the three?

Thanks a lot for the help. So far, this has been an excellent forum :)

Is the Sony available locally or over the net? Or are you just reading an old review?

The Sony would be the hands down best TV, but I just think you are going to have a difficult time finding one.

I'm looking at old reviews:

Your right... I can't find any of the TVs on sale. I've tried everywhere online but no website is selling them.

You will maybe find one, very rare if you go look physically at stores around you like BB, CC, Sears, ext. I go to the BB near my house almost everyday to look at the last of the crt's since one of the workers I asked there told me there no longer recieving anymore crt tv's. One day when I went to BB I saw a Sony 34 in 970 sitting there right in front of me and I was in awwww. The screen was bigger then all the other crt tv's and the quality of the picture was beautiful. So try that and hope you find what you want.

The 32" Sharp 32SF560 at Best Buy has respectable picture quality from what I've seen. The 27" Sharp is curved-screen, and the price at BB is too high, IMO. The 27" Sanyo at Wal-Mart looks decent. There is also a 30" widescreen Sanyo, which personally, I'd rather own. There are a few CRTs that I haven't seen from brands that I think very little of (RCA, Magnavox).

ETA: FWIW, the last 27" that Sony sold here was the KD-27FS170. I own one. It was clearance-priced at Circuit City for $170 a very long time ago, so I doubt you could still find it at a B&M.

One more vote for the Sony 27". I'm extremely happy with mine. It has an ATSC tuner and the picture quality OTA is as close to HD as you'll get in a standard tv. As someone else suggested, your best bet is to physically visit local stores and hope to find a display model hidden away. Sears, Frys, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.

Looks like I'll be choosing between the 25 and 30 inch sanyo from Walmart. Thats if I cant snag a Sony Wega or something from a local store. The Sanyo is getting reat ratings on walmart's website so it looks decent enough I guess. Lets just hope it lasts long enough.
