View Full Version : If Warner Brothers go Blu-Ray exclusive, what will you do?
hdm1080p 11-03-07, 11:37 PM Saw this thread started already here with HD-DVD in the title, thought we should have one with Blu-Ray in the title too.
Since both sides seem to think WB switching to one or the other is the final death blow to the other.
With WB still selling 300 at 2:1 pace, along with most of their other titles, and sales for BD through the roof. What do you think will happen this Q4 and beyond? And if WB goes Blu, what will you do? (Poll)
** Note: Choice 4 should read "I will switch from HD-DVD exclusive to Blu-Ray Exculsive"
TheCrackedJack 11-04-07, 12:08 AM People should be banned for flooding these forums with these Warner's threads :p But seriously, I don't care. I'm just hope quality releases keep coming from all studios.
RWetmore 11-04-07, 12:27 AM How about none of those options. If WB goes Blu-ray exclusive, I'll continue to buy only Blu-ray discs as I have since last December despite also owning an HD-DVD player since April of 2006.
Even if this happens, it is still not the end. The end is only when the rest of the studios go Blu-ray exclusive, and that might not happen right away (if ever).
Dr Kain 11-04-07, 12:56 AM Agreed with RWetmore. I have both, but since WB insists on Combos, I only buy their movies on BR.
With $99 HD DVD players, does it makes any sense for anyone in the Bluray camp to miss out on HD DVD exclusive movie releases? And with a $300 PS3, does it make any sense to miss out on Bluray exclusive releases?
I'll still buy their releases (hell, I only just bought 300 yesterday) because I only own Blu-ray. I don't consider myself Tru-blu though, just lucky that Sony put a BD player in every PS3.

To the first question, my answer is "yes". Some of us are looking for a player that has better than 1080i output. I'm waiting for a HD DVD player that has a "force 1080p24" mode. My TV supports it, and my AV receiver supports it when it is "forced", but if they auto-negotiate, I get 1080p60 through it. I want to eliminate the 3:2 judder. I tried going format neutral, but cannot find an acceptable Toshiba HD DVD player. I want to enjoy some of the exclusives in the HD DVD camp.
If WB goes exclusive to one camp, it will shift the balance of power, but I don't think it will be a death blow. I hope they keep releasing on BD because that is my preferred format, and WB has a large catalog of titles that I'd like to have in high definition.
Ideally, I'd like 24P too, feed it to a scaler (when one that can handle 72 Hz) comes out) and triple it into my crt pj. But for a short term solution to be able to enjoy HD DVD, we are only talking $99. The PS3 isn't a perfect Bluray solution for me, but it sure allows me to enjoy Bluray until either the perfect hdmi prepro or the perfect Bluray player shows up. If only the PS3 had cost me $99... :)

Yes. HD-DVD movies are not that exclusive. Besides, you can't get SPiderman, James Bond, Wet Side Story or X-Men on HD-DVD. Without those films, who cares about what little 'exclusives' that they have? If the films were that good and I had faith that the format would last, then I would have made a move.
It is hard to INVEST in a format where only one manufacturer makes the product and you realy have no choice in the looks or features of a player. Most movie studios are behind Blu Ray and HD-DVD is already talking about going tripple layer! SInce they have to go tripple, it shows that the format was not viable and should never have come out. If Toshiba were smart, that should have worked with SOny and all would be happy.
swanlee 11-04-07, 11:20 AM As a Neutral owner I just don't see Warner going BLU-RAY, They have always favored HD-DVD there are still a lot of high profile movies not on BLU-RAY that they have released like, The Matrix or Batman Begins. Add in the fact they are really big on web and interactive extras and the patents they hold for HD-DVD and I think only the most fanatical BLU fans would think there is any REAL chance of them going BLU-RAY exclusive.
Don't you mean Sony should have worked with Toshiba when Toshiba approached Sony? Sony wanted nothing to do with it. This format war is ALL about coporate greed with billions of dollars of future liscensing fees at stake.
I care about what exclusives what each side has. Being format neutral means I don't miss out on any new release. I am not held hostage to any company marketing. I have a choice. And there's always rentals if one chooses not to "invest".
I get tired hearing about Bluray disk size. This has to be the dumbest arguement in the whole format war.

You guys kill me on this meutrality thing. Here is the meaning of neutral: http://www.m-w.com/dictionary
Owning both does not make you neutral, staying away from both makes you neutral.

Oh lord.
Don't we have enough bickering with out having to now argue over the best term to describe someone who supports both sides? 1080i vs 1080p is annoying enough. But now it's semantics?

Completely false. Blu-ray was in development years before HD DVD, by many more companies than just Sony. Toshiba came along later with HD DVD. Read all about it in this post at HDD (http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?p=383787#post383787).

Yes, Toshiba's greed. We would not have a format war today if they had taken part in Blu-ray along with every other company.
