View Full Version : X-Files movie on Blu?
With the announcement of the second movie do you think there is any chance of the first movie being released on Blu?
I think there is a big enough fanbase to sustain a release.
BluRayFreak 11-04-07, 07:45 AM I've been (patiently) waiting for them to announce the entire series to come out on Blu-Ray :) Not to mention the movie also.
I'm sure that in time, it will happen.
Probably not until the second movie is due for Home Video next Fall/Winter.
gorthocar 11-04-07, 09:35 AM I'm a big fan of the series, and I'd love to have a copy on BD with lossless audio. I still have the movie on dvd with dts audio, but once you go high definition, there is no turning back.
I'd be surprised if they rerelased the series on BD, but I wouldn't complain if it were available.
mumbles3k 11-04-07, 12:29 PM Wouldn't they have some trouble putting the early non-HD episodes onto Blu-ray?
I'd love it if Fox were to release Fight The Future on BD when the sequel hits theaters next summer. If not, then I certainly hope both will be out on Blu 4Q '08 at the latest.
carnivale880 11-04-07, 02:15 PM the sequel is set to hit theaters next july so it could be timed to release than or maybe when the film gets on video in the fall. hopefully soon though. i really want the series and the film but the film is much more likely to come out first.
chartwel 11-04-07, 10:22 PM we wont see x files in HD unless they do some serious encoding. the first 5 seasons i believe were shot on video. shame really, this is my favorite series i have ever watched. i guess x files 2 will have to suffice.
Megalith 11-04-07, 10:23 PM The bee scene should be cool in DTS-MA.

Why? I can only assume you don't realise that most tv shows are shot on film not video (although some are movie to HD video). All it takes is a remaster in HD. I'm a little disappointed more shows aren't remastered, perhaps they feel that the cost of doing so isn't beneficial but as more people buy HDTV's there'll be more reasons
paulstachniak 11-05-07, 01:27 AM i would KILL for this film on Blu. I still watch it about once every three months. who knows why, but its a fun little piece of cinema.

This all sounds well and good but this is the real problem.
TV shows in that era were shot on film but edited on video.
Which means to remaster the footage they need to re-edit every episode which would take an enormous amount of time.
I know this because my favourite show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was shot this way and it burns me every night. I cry about it... :( seriously.
I'm willing to slave myself and re-edit it all for Fox, but sadly I have no talent when it comes to film editing! :p
BluRayFreak 11-05-07, 08:34 AM How could it be any harder to remaster the X-Files series when older movies have been remastered already?
Halloween, Dawn Of The Dead, 2001, The Shining, etc.
Fox knows that X-Files has a humongous following and with the sequel coming up next year, who knows what they're planning!
Sorry, but I don't buy that it can't be "remastered" argument....if that were the case, I guess we'd never expect to see "The Wizard Of Oz" make it onto HI-DEF...or better yet, "Gone With The Wind".
Because like someone already said, the show was posted (i.e. edited) on video.
The movies you mention were shot on film, edited on film (using a movieola where you actually physically cut strips of film and glue them together), and then after it was all said and done transferred to video for video release. However, to do High-Def transfers they can always go back to the original film elements which are cut and mixed at a resolution higher/akin to high-def.
"The X-Files" and other shows of its day were shot on film, and then all of the raw footage was transferred to video and then it was edited in a lower resolution format. At the time, they didn't think ahead towards high-def. So, unlike the films you mention, an appropriate master with enough resolution does not physically exist.
Now, it's not impossible to go retrieve the original camera elements and recut the actual film to conform to what was edited on video (they have paperwork saying which take was used and such). However, the real problem is that the special effects were also created and rendered on video at the lower resolution. To get them up to High-Def quality they would need to re-do them, much like is being done for "Star Trek" these days.
If Fox thinks they will be able to turn a buck on doing it, i.e. if they're confident "X-Files" has the replay potential in syndication (not just blu-ray where these isn't a whole lot of profit to be had yet) that Trek does, then they might undertake the expense. In the end, like most things, it boils down to money.
stockmonkey2000 11-05-07, 10:39 AM From the look of the DVD's it would need alot of work. The DVD's from the early seasons look terrible.
BluRayFreak 11-05-07, 10:50 AM Guess that means that we'll be getting all 9 X-Files Seasons somewhere down the road :D

Dan Hitchman 11-05-07, 11:03 AM Main sequences shot on film, SFX rendered and composited at 480i, except for possibly the wide-screen years (though, I could be wrong and Seasons 5-9 could have been wide-screen 480i and not created for HD).
They would have to pull a Seinfeld and go back to the camera negatives, re-scan them for HD and then re-do the SFX in HD, and then put them all back together.
Will skin-flint Fox do such a thing??
Dan
Such an effort for the series (or just about any series facing similar issues) would not happen until Blu-ray had much deeper market penetration (hee hee).
They have to be guaranteed enough sales to turn a profit on such a massive undertaking.
Robert George 11-05-07, 09:59 PM Before anyone should expect X-Files on Blu-ray, you will have to wait for Fox to actually support Blu-ray.
