Hi All,

I am currently an XA2 Owner. There are sony and disney titles that are hard not to miss so I have decided to go format neutral.

I am want a BD player strictly for playing blue ray titles. Any recommendations for under $200 if any?

Thanks

$299 for the 40GB PS3 by buying from sonystyle.com with their credit card, which you apply for at the same time to get a $100 credit back on any purchase over $299 ($399-$100).

That's the best deal so far.

If you go to your local best buy you might find some comparable deals on open item BR players. I saw a BDP-1200 for $230 at my local best buy today. Which like your XA2 is equipped with a Reon. Damn fine deal if you ask me.

Look out for deals at Best Buy on some open box BD players. I have seen some for as cheap as $199 for the BDP-1200.

Hmm.. under $200 could be hard at this time, but not impossible. Like dildatonr and 49er suggested, check Best Buy for opened items. Also, keep an eye on Ebay ...you might find someone selling their older BD player that are looking to upgrade.

Though, that brings up a point. You may want to spend the extra $$$ and get a new final spec (profile 1.1) player simply for future proofing your investment.

I too have the XA2, pick up a PS3 as it's the best and cheapest Blu-Ray player out there. The PS3 is not as nice as the XA2, but is better than the HD-DVD players available for the $200 price tag.

But that's double the price he's asking about.

If you can swing the ps3 I would say go for it.

One plus about buying a cheaper older BR standalone is less investment risk. The PS3 will have a greater resell value if BR loses the format war. But an open item older stand alone should still be able to play the movies. There's a chance you might miss out on future interactive features. But the one you buy now should still keep you satisfied until a finalized BR player is on the shelf and affordable.

For under $200? Everyone knows that HD DVD players just hit the $200 mark, and that there's no way in hell BRD players will get that low anytime soon.

I smell a troll...

Well even still, he just got solid advice on how to get a Reon equipped BR player for close to $200. I don't know where you might be able to get a Reon equipped HD DVD player for that price.

Kill em with kindness?

Yes I was looking into the bpd-1200. I was reading around the forums and found others having luck getting good deals on this player so I went to my local best buy today and found nada. I was looking for a display model but they had none. Are these discontinued?

The BDP-1400 just came out not too long ago, replacing the 1200.

$400 PS3.

Comes with Spidey three and some other stuff if you shop around. Plus the wi-fi for FW updates is awesome. Except for DTSMA it's the best on the market.

Super reliable. Never had a BD that wouldn't play.
BTW you will need to spend some cash for the remote.(But definently get one)

I ended up finding a $350 PS3 (with the PS2 hardware in it) with Casino Royale on Craigslist. You can always buy used.

Hear hear. I got an unopened 60gb ps3 for 300 off craigslist because they wanted my old Gamecube and a couple games. Smokin deal if you ask me.

I would try calling all the BB's in your area. They might even ship it to the store nearest to you iif you find one in a further away store.

Also check CC, Tweeter, etc. There are many places that are getting rid of the 1200's now and prices are going down fast. You have to specifically ask them for any open box items, even if you don't see any on the floor.

I think the best advice is to buy the cheapest player.

The next gen player will always be better and cheaper so save your money and buy a new one a couple of generations later.

I was on the fence about going neutral as well since there doesn't seem to be an end to this ridiculous war anytime soon.

Price was the determining factor for me. I was able to pick up a Toshiba A3 w/ ten free movies for $99 at BB this last week... I couldn't pass that up!

Even if you are a rabid HD DVD supporter the BDP1200 should be given a serious look as an open item purchase. Assuming you don't already own an XA2. Getting anything with a reon in it under $300 is amazing. If you just jumped onto the HD bandwagon with an A2 go find an open item 1200. Even if your precious HD DVD wins, the 1200 will still knock the socks off the A2 as an upconverting SD DVD player.

really can't see why a xa2 owner would ask for a $200 blu-ray player. cheapest and best blu-ray player is the $399 ps3. only thing i dont like about it is lack of sacd support.

I did see an open box samsung bdp-1400 for $399, I was tempted but have decided on a PS3. I just need the player for blu-ray titles. I have the XA2 for everything else.

MODS: Just noticed I did not post in the blu-ray player section. Please move if you like. sorry

I always check for open box items in the local electronic store but the best price I've seen on the BDP-1200 is $399. If I saw one for $200 I'd buy it. HQV reon upconversion for $200? It would be mine. That and being able to watch Blu Ray movies too? Why oh why can't I find one for this price.
