View Full Version : how long do game demos take you to download?

My cable download speed is around 5 Mbps. My Xbox is 2 floors below my router and the Microsoft wireless adapter did not even pick up my network. I have since tried a powerline bridge. It worked as soon as I plugged it in. I just don't know if I am experiencing slow networking speeds, or is this just how it should be?

When I download a demo, it can take 20-60 minutes to get it. All depends on what the game/size is (250 MB - 800 MB). This seems much slower than it should given the size of the files, but maybe others experience the same type of speed.

Also, I have lossless WMV files on my upstairs machine and they stream fine. When I am browsing my pictures however, I do see a loading bar that sometimes takes a second or two until the next image loads (2-4 MB images), while other times the loading is instantaneous.

Does this fall within the normal speeds others are experiencing, or is this powerline bridge really slowing me down? I don't know of a utility to measure my connection between my Xbox and the computer. Thanks.

10-15 minutes. If you are playing games, it may take longer because downloads stop and start depending on what the console is doing.

Yeah what he said. Running 3mb DSL and 5mb cable modem was the same. This is a wired network.

going off of a cable modem, a 1 gig demo would take about 20 mins. does depend on the time of day though. faster in the late evening time.

A long, long, long, long time compared to most. Typical 800MB or larger demo takes me about 8 hours to download.

I have timewarner in an apartment building and a 1.0gb demo goes in about 10 minutes. It clearly has to do with demand though, as when Bioshock first hit the demo scene that took about 1-1.5 hrs.

802.11G can't really be the issue behind the slow downloads. "Timeshift" at under 600MB took well over 40 minutes last night. I can copy 1GB back to my main PC from a PC that shares the same connection as the 360 in under 30 minutes, so it still seems like Live downloads are artificially throttled...

I'm wireless and a 1GB demo takes right at 1 hr to download.

Ironically I was looking at this the other day. Verizon FiOS 5/2 with a wired connection to the router. I was getting about 1MB/s downloads during a busy time over the weekend. I also have one other xbox wirelessly connected and 3 other wireless computers in the house sharing that connection.

Routinely with PC/Mac Internet speed tests I see 4.7Mb/s download speeds and 1.4Mb/s upload speeds but the test says my uploads may be compressed ... I don't remember.

I have the wireless adapter connected to a Linksys wireless modem WRT54G and there are some downloads that I can't even get started. Like the big system downloads. The progress bar won't even move. The Guitar Hero 3 update I had the same problem with.

It works fine as a media center extender and I have no trouble streaming video from my PC, but if I want to download something, I have to run the cable modem directly to the 360 through the wired ethernet port. It's annoying.

Once I go wired in from the modem, the speeds are blazing and I get 1 gig demo in about 10-15 minutes. I use optimum online w/boost

It all depends on the time of day. I recommend setting your consol to continue downloading after you have shut it off (under the settings blade), before you go to bed. I have the best luck between 3:00AM to 7:00AM EST.
Plus, waking up to tons of new content is always nice!

Fantastic idea. I always do this. One of the nice features that the Xbox has. I typically don't have to do this because I, surprisingly with RCN, have a great download pipe but it's a great feature if your connection is subpar.

When demos first come out it takes forever (as in up to 2 hrs with bioshock). When they are old I can usually do it in about 15 minutes.

With verizon dsl it would take hours and hours. Now that i've switched back to optimum 15-20mins if that.

I honestly don't pay any attention I just let everything download in the background while I am playing games. I have the 30/5 FIOS connection so it doesn't really take all that long I don't think. It is funny though is when I download themes or gamer pics...Almost as soon as I click download I get the pop up saying it is done.
