View Full Version : Will Vegas Movie Studio benefit from a Quad Core Processor? Sam Dotson 11-07-07, 08:35 AM Was Vegas developed to benefit from the new quad core processors? Sam I'm running Vegas Pro 8a on my HP Laptop -- it's only a dual core but it is using the 64 bit Vista Ultimate and it works well -- better than on my XP pro P4 machine. Sorry I don't know about the quad core issue. Larry Becker Not sure about Vegas movie studio but Vegas pro is a true multi core program that will take advantage of all 4 cores. pimentelj 11-24-07, 12:52 PM I'm running Vegas Pro 8a on my HP Laptop -- it's only a dual core but it is using the 64 bit Vista Ultimate and it works well -- better than on my XP pro P4 machine. I plan on using the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum version to integrate video and pictures in slideshows. Will an Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5GHz) be enough for what I am doing? The other processor I am looking at is a AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (2.0GHz) for $50 more on the computer build. Both will have 2GB of RAM. Please let me know. Thanks Get absolutely as much processing power and RAM as you can afford!!!!! You don't say if you're doing AVCHD or any kind of HD processing -- that really eats up the processor cycles and RAM. Even if you're just doing standard def NOW, you will probably want to go HD soon. My laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, which I got for increased speed AND CACHE. I'm not sure the T5250 has much -- The T5200, which was available when I got mine, had a smaller cache (if any -- can't remember, sorry). CACHE (and CASH!) are pretty important when sorting this stuff out. Watch out for the bus speeds, too -- faster the better... $50 seems a small premium for a 20% increase in speed (although probably not 20% greater performance, but maybe 10...). Spending an extra $50 or even $3-500 wisely now on meaningful upgrades to your pc (graphics card, fast and BIG hard drives, processor) will bring HUGE payoffs very quickly. These are pretty universal truths in pc purchasing, but much more valid with any kind of serious video or photo editing. Larry bernhtp 01-01-08, 05:05 PM I have a new high-end system that includes Vista Ultimate 64, overclocked Q6700 quad core, dual-SLI 8800 GTS 512, 4 GB RAM. Sony tells me that Motion Picture Browser will not work on this system, but have not tried to install it. They say that they are working on a version that is compatible. More importantly, I am considering getting Vegas 8 Platinum, but cannot find definitive information on the Sony site about compatibility. This thread implies that it should work. Will it just do the editing, or also the video acquisition (transfer and storage)? What else can you tell me? What do you recommend for AVCHD editing on this hardware? Tom I have an HP laptop that's dual core, Vista Ultimate and when I tried to install Picture Motion Browser it completely whacked the pc. I had to get HP on the phone and they walked me through some arcane restore process. Not fun at all. It was my first experience with 64 bit Vista compatibility issues, and from that I've learned to check for 64 bit compatibility FIRST before installing. I don't know about the Sony Vegas 8 PLATINUM edition, but I have installed the Vegas Pro 8a on my Vista Ultimate laptop and it runs just fine, other than the choppiness in the preview screen. There are a few posts on the Sony Vegas bulletin board that indicate real advantages to using quad core processors with the Pro 8a software. Here's a link to the board: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowTopics.asp?ForumID=4 To get the files onto my Vista Ultimate Laptop, I just hook the camcorder/dock up via USB. The pc sees the camcorder harddrive and I just copy them over like any other file. Sony Vegas Pro 8a is then able to work with the files just fine. I got a good price on the Pro 8 software from PC Mall. I think you'd be happier if you spent a bit more on the software and got the real thing that really does what you want it to. Larry Becker |
