Ok... This is going to sound strange but I've been watching a lot of ripped DVD's with my mac lately with Leopard, etc...

The movie looks grainy in the beginning but about half way through it looks much better, much smoother. My wife has noticed the same thing.

Am I crazy?

Now if it were CAV Laserdisc, that would make perfect sense ;-)

(Have to be a real Laserdisc nerd to get that one.)

I haven't noticed ripped DVD's doing that... are they just ripped or recompressed? I could see a recompressor like DVD2One misalocating fewer bits to the beginning that the end.

Is the file on the internal drive or an external drive? Which program are you using to play it back? Did you only rip the DVD or did you modify (transcode) the film?

The DVD is ripped to an external drive played back over giagbit. I have moved the file over to be local and looked at the beginning of the movie but haven't watched it through.

They are just ripped and not compressed or modified in any way at all.

I'm using the stock DVDPlayer in Leopard to play it back.

I knew it sounded strange when I wrote it, but on the off chance that someone else had seen it then I wanted to throw it out there.

The only thing that makes sense to me is it's the ripping process and for some reason it's getting a better rip half way through, but that doesn't sound right either.

Why not just put the DVD into your Mini and try it from there?

That's not possible -- a rip is a bit for bit copy -- it either succeeds or fails and MTR will tell you if it fails. It is entirely possible you are dealing with a lousy DVD transfer -- there are tons of those out there.

I would tend to agree on the rip.... Sure, the DVD Transfer could be bad, but I seem to notice this on every movie.

Like I said, it's probably in my head.
