I would like some help figuring out what to do to stream files to the PS3.

I am sure I am doing something wrong, I have tried Windows Media Player 11 and TVersity, and the PS3 is unable to find a media server.

Is there a setting in the PS3/WMP11/TVersity that I need to enable to be able to find a media server? I could not find one.

UPDATE: My problem turned out to be the firewall. As soon as I disabled that (I haven't found the specific name I should grant access to, yet) the PS3 was able to find the media server. Everything worked fine with WMP11 and TVersity, and even the Mrs. was delighted to listen to her music with better speakers than those in the TV.

Now, I just learned (after someone pointed me in that direction) that you need to install codecs for TVersity to stream video files, which is my next step.

To get the codec pack you can go to the CCCP website (http://www.cccp-project.net/) and download it from there.

In the download page for TVersity (http://tversity.com/download/) there are some comments below in that page, that mention some directshow filters that might be required, depending on the type of file to be transcoded. Make sure you read that too.

My WM11 worked almost instantly, I had to do a lot of playing around with the settings in TVersity before it worked, there is a setting for PS3 in TVersity that I have on. I really can't help much right now (at work no access to my cpu) but I'll give you a list of settings this afternoon when I'm back home (if GT5 prologue doesn't take up all my time;)). It was finicky but I can't remember what I did to get it working. WM11 works great, go online and read the PS3 manual about media streaming then read WM11 help about it and see if it will work. Try a hardwire to rule out a wifi issue.

Hey, I wouldn't blame you... I would spend my free time playing GT5 as well . But whenever you are bored of passing all of those AI foes, take a look at your settings, I'd appreciate it.

I have my PS3 hardwired and my CPUs too but the PS3 only finds one computer when i search (using WM11 or Nero) and i dont know why. Frustrating.

It could be a firewall issue as well.. you might want to briefly turn off your windows firewall to see if it that is causing the problem.

There's a setting in the media player, where you can enable some sort of a bluetooth connection between your computer and PS3. Sorry I cant remember exactly what menu item that is (been a long time since i did mine) - but I found "How to" somewhere on these forums - so just do a search!

Yeah, I actually just started GT5, downloaded last night, it gets boring fast, the demo is almost smaller than the old GTHD demo. Anyways, I'll try to list my settings:

General:
Auto Detect (you could try selecting PS3) but doesn't matter for mine??
Every box is ticked.

Media Library:
I have the 1st and 3rd box ticked
rest shouldn't matter

Trancoder:
Transcoder is set to "only when needed"
video resolution is only set to 400x300 (I should probably try upping this!!)
Direct show is ticked using WMV8
Optimized for Quality
Connection: Wireless G (Excellent)
Compression: Average
Decode fast is checked

Otherwise you probably need to shut down any antivirus/firewall software like Norton or even Windows firewall. Or else read the help file and it tells you how to configure them. Try reading this http://tversity.com/support/faq/#troubleshooting-faq and I think it talks about what to check. I remember that after going through that faq i finally got mine to work!!

If your PC and PS3 are on the same network, and the TVersity server is not showing up on the PS3, the problem is almost certainly on the PC side.

Most likely, the problem is that the PC's firewall is blocking Tversity. Make sure you can access TVersity through your web browser on that (and even better another) PC. Follow the setup instructions to open a port for the TVersity server in your firewall (from memory, I think this is called mediaserver.exe).

Try turning UPnP off in your router settings...this usually works.

I think this is what I was trying to remember, telling the firewall to allow mediaserver.exe got mine to work back in the day when I first set it up!!

I have had no problem whatsoever in getting my PS3 to see my TVersity media server (which is running on Win2k3), with all the default settings. Tweaking the TVersity settings did speed things up a bit, and so did PS3 firmware 2.0.

- Make sure you have the correct network settings on your PS3, i have everything on autodetect.
- Make sure your router has UPNP enabled if it has that option. The PS3 should auto-detect a UPNP router.
- Checking the firewall settings on your PC is a good suggestion. Also, i know of some virusscanning software that will block ports.

What is the pont of TVersity? I hooked up my PS3 and found Both my laptop and desktop just fine with WMP11. What is the added benefit using the program if I can get to all my movies, music, and pics?

Sorry for going off topic, but I figured this thread was still active and wanted to ask a question:

How do you save wallpapers from internet when using the PS3 and using it as a background?

I don't think WMP11 can convert all the file types on the fly like Divx and MediaCenterRecordings like TVersity can. Thats why I have both running and for a while I had NeroHome running too but that all seemed too much.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I was just able to make it work with WMP, and there are some 'unsupported files', which doesn't happen with TVersity.

By the way, what I had to do is disable the firewall. At least I think this is what made the difference.

I will try with TVersity now.

I was able to see the files through TVersity, but I see the same files I saw with WMP. How do I set it to convert the files on the fly so I can see videos from "unsupported formats"?

When I found out about TVersity it was in a thread on AVS and the person recommending it also made sure that I downloaded the most recent codec pack, this may be what allows all the files to be converted. Try searching AVS for TVersity threads and see if you can find the link to the codec pack.

I found the codec pack, along with some recommendations for some potentially necessary filters needed, and included a link in the first post. I will report once I set that up.

Update:

I got the PS3 to connect to TVersity. I granted access to the PS3 in the firewall so I don't have to turn it off every time I need to connect, but I am still unable to transcode the files from TVersity. I installed the codec pack, downloaded the latest TVersity version (which, by the way, includes another codec pack) and the PS3 still sees only MPG videos (and only video, no audio), but there are some files that just say "Unsupported format file" or something similar.

Is there anything else I need to configure?

Is there any options with tversity or other media servers which can open an iso image and serve the dvd to the ps3?

alternatively, I downloaded and installed winamp 5.5 on a few PC's in the house. nothing else was done to the router/ps3's and now can stream media amongst eachother.

Including video files?

I can't seem to get TVersity to stream some videos to the PS3. I have some videos from a previous camera in .mpg format, and even Windows Media Player streams those fine. But my current camera saves them in .mov format, and not even TVersity can stream those. I did install the codec pack (in the first post) and I checked the settings looking for a solution, but nothing yet.

Has anyone been through that yet?

How did you granted access to the PS3 in the firewall? The reasons I'm asking because I have my DSL box bridge to Linksys WRT54G and I can't get the PS3 to pick up my Media stream from the PC and I also have Onelive Care on my PC. Any help will be great.

I am not familiar with Onelive care, but if it's anything like what I use, you have to go into the settings/connections, and add the PS3's IP Address as a safe device, so it can connect to it.

Is the PS3 already connected to the internet? If so, you don't need to do anything else in the LInksys, just in Onelive care.

Use DVD Shrink to convert ISO to .vob and you can stream .vob on Tversity.

so for those that need to turn off your windows firewall to get the ps3 to stream, what is your permanent solution? just keeping the firewall off? thats not too safe in my opinion.

edgary

I'm not too familiar with Windows Firewall, but if it doesn't allow you to grant access to the PS3, you can get a more flexible firewall solution, one that allows you to add certain addresses as safe, so you'll have firewall protection but the PS3 would have access granted.

If you are behind a router, you don't have anything to worry about.

I have tried ZoneAlarm and it is working perfectly with Tversity.

I just gave up on TVersity (last night). I installed all the codecs but I still can only stream just a few WMV files anyway.

I downloaded a program to convert video files (flv, avi, etc) to WMV so I'm trying that now. We'll see how that goes.

Can TVersity send ISO files (since WMP can't)?

I wouldn't know, I wasn't able to send almost anything through TVersity. You might want to check out their site (http://tversity.com/home) for such information.

I was looking for some ideas on this problem. I can stream my pictures and music just fine using WMP11 but not my mpeg videos? I know I have watched videos before so I don't know what the problem is. It seems like it works inconsistenly sometimes. Thanks for any help.

No.
You could use a USB memory stick or hard disc though if you have no home network to move files to the PS3 internal hard drive.
