View Full Version : Infocus Deal: SP 4800 upgrade to IN74 for $99 - Good Deal?
ChaoticMachinery 11-09-07, 04:20 PM Hi all,
My SP4800 is still under warranty (ends at the end of Dec. 2007) and I am trying to send it in for it's 6 month fix. (Every 6 months I have to send it in because of picture quality). From what Infocus says, they do not fix these units any more. I was told that I could trade it in for a IN74 (refurbished) for $99 with a 90 day warranty. What you guys think? Is this a good deal?
Plus I was told that I could pay for it now and then when they get a unit in they will ship one out. The great part was they had no idea of when they would get another unit in. Not a confidence winner there.
I would much rather upgrade to a IN76. But Infocus support said it was a no go.
If I do buy the unit, how do I hook my computer up to it? I currently have a VGA card in it. I don't see a VGA port on the project. I could put a video card with a DVI port (used to hookup a LCD) in it. Will it take a regular old DVI cable?
I tried to get this out of the lady I was talking to. But who can understand the Indian support!? Anyone know how I can get a hold of an American to speak to in Customer Support?
Thanks,
CM
gwlaw99 11-09-07, 05:26 PM I think it's a great deal. Make sure you get a new bulb. If you wanted an IN76, you could just sell the IN74 for $4-500.
therealgeno 11-10-07, 10:28 AM That is a no-brainer.
ChaoticMachinery 11-12-07, 08:11 PM Get this. I called Infocus today to tell them that I will purchase the projector. The person I am talking to says that I have to send in my projector and they will send me the refurbished one. The punchline is that they do not have any in stock and have no idea when they will have them in stock.

Ok, why do you have to send it in every 6 months? Is it something related to this projector? I would take them up on their deal just so I wouldn't have to send it in the 4800 every 6 months.

ChaoticMachinery 11-13-07, 11:45 AM Mike,
My SP4800 loses focus every six months. Best way to describe it is the picture starts to get fuzzy. I send the projector in, Infocus does something to it. It comes back and the image is sharp.
I have asked Infocus for information as to what was wrong with it. I have never gotten a reply to my query.
I have it mounted on the ceiling so it does not get moved around. And yes, I do try to focus the image in with the focus dial.

BuffaloJim 11-13-07, 03:05 PM I think it's a great deal, but I REALLY don't like the fact that you have to send your unit and then have to wait until they have an IN74 to give you. On the other hand, if you have to send the 4800 in anyways, you may not really be missing anything.

bluegreenturtle 11-13-07, 03:28 PM That's a good deal. I don't think a 4800 has really any resale value (a 4805 does though) so they are essentially giving you a modern projector for $99.
That's a superb deal. The 4800 isn't close. The IN74 will walk all over it. Hell an IN72 and Infocus 4805 walks all over it, so I can promise you the higher res IN74 will. It may not be "HD" by definition, but make no mistake about it, there is a noticeable improvement in resolution and can look very "HD". Every other area will be hugely improved, not to mention that newer Infocus units are calibrated to D65 standard.

Thats weird. Seems like there would be a permanent fix for it. I definitely would get the IN74 and not just because of the focus issue but because of better pq. I would've already got rid of the 4800 because of the focus problem so I think you will be MUCH better off with the IN74.

gwlaw99 11-13-07, 04:42 PM Maybe they will be forced to send you an IN76 if they don't have any IN74s

Dreams do come true...

ChaoticMachinery 11-14-07, 08:28 PM I was hoping that myself. I did ask to see if I could get an IN76 and they would not do it.

you would need the M1 to VESA cable to hook up the 15 pin VGA
or M1 DA cable infocus propriatery cable.
JohnJake 11-22-07, 12:15 PM Infocus also offered to replace my 4 year old SP7200 with an IN74 for $400. It seemed like a no brainer till I checked the specs on the IN74. It doesn't output naive 720P which seems like a big drawback considering I'm all about HD and detail.
My connundrum is whether I fork over the $400 to get the 74 and hold off on buying a new PJ for a while, or if I keep the money and put it toward a brand new 1080P PJ in the next few months. I'm guessing I'd get more for the 74 as a resale, even with the cost of the bulb, but am I going to give up a lot on picture quality (since I'd have to live with it for longer). Or is the improved contrast, and brightness worth it.
The reason I called IF in the first place was because my 7200 doesn't work via DVI with my new PS3 (DVI isn't compatible). The drop in PQ from DVI to component is too much for me to live with so I have to do something.
hoosierjerry 12-05-07, 09:32 AM Johnjake,
Is the IN74 they are offering new? I have a 5700 in for repair under warranty and they are offering me a IN74 (this is voicemail so I do not yet know if I have to pay or if it is new or refurbished).
Is the IN74 a good deal for the 5700?
gwlaw99 12-05-07, 03:33 PM If they are offering you an IN74 with a new bulb for free then I would definitely take it.
Bruce Wayne 12-05-07, 04:45 PM I wish I could upgrade the 72 to a 76 for $100.00. That would be sweet. I would jump on the upgrade from the 4800 to the IN74 in a heartbeat.
