View Full Version : WOW! What you can do with the PS3 Themes is Very Nice!
freestyle 11-09-07, 07:45 PM Check these out (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=71510)... Already popping up by users.
I started playing with the Theming systems and it is pretty robust. You can modify just about every icon used in the entire XMB. You can have up to 16 background images that will show up randomly (or just 1). You can change the look of your upper right notifications (ie make it much more graphical)...
...you can change the pointers, etc, etc.
Though it can get a bit time consuming to really do a pro looking theme, I think we'll see that there isn't going to be any need for charging for themes... You can do it all yourself...
I've already seen some Windows Vista Themes, and Apple OS X themes... LOL It won't be long to have a Xbox Live Dashboard theme. :D
Any of you played with these yet? Maybe AVSers could have a theme section/thread here of our own?
...I was thinking that the 2.0 update should have been called 1.95... but after seeing how drastically you can change your PS3's feel now, I gotta say this is definitely a 2.0.
Edit: In case you missed the link...
Here's a page with instructions and the download (http://gunlager.blogspot.com/2007/11/ps3-theme-creation.html).
And here's another basic walkthrough (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=71550).
Mongoos150 11-09-07, 08:31 PM I haven't really played around with them - how do we complete all of this customization? Download .p3t files on the PS3 via the browser?
makingmusic476 11-09-07, 08:31 PM How do you get these themes onto your ps3? Are there certain "theme" file types or something?
On that note, I've been having trouble downloading things from the ps3's browser. I was trying to get some cool backgrounds from a simple thread on the playstation.com forums, but it wouldn't let the page load, as it took up too much memory. I then decided to save the images I wanted on my PC and then e-mailed them to myself. I then opened up the e-mail in the ps3's browser, but it won't let me download them directly to my ps3. It keeps asking me to insert a storage device, but I don't have any flash drives or anything lying around.
Can anybody tell me what I'm supposed to do get these pictures onto my ps3? :confused:
WhoMe14 11-09-07, 09:01 PM I must have missed somthing..hows this done?
Nino1919 11-09-07, 09:07 PM You have to put the file on a PS3/Theme/ folder in this format via usb, memory stick, etc... Go to themes on the PS3, install. Lots of good ones popping up already.

Try streaming the image to your PS3.

It is in the top of that post I linked to.
Here's a page with instructions and the download (http://gunlager.blogspot.com/2007/11/ps3-theme-creation.html). There's a link there to the PS3 Custom Theme Creation Compiler... all the instructions are there.
WhoMe14 11-10-07, 02:05 PM Thanks for clearing that up. Man people arent wasting any time making some cool stuff for this.
SheepFactory 11-10-07, 02:18 PM I am using the winter theme with the cod4 background wallpaper (the same one in the game icon background) and it looks so good.

I like that option to change the background image but have the icons stay the same. I'm using OSX (mac) icons with a desktop image from Leopard. Very cool.

seanpatrickb 11-10-07, 05:02 PM I'm using the aqua teen theme right now and i think it looks pretty sweet. I think most of the custom themes look pretty good.
I just created my own Simpsons Theme. It took awhile since it was my first one, wasnt too sure about all I needed do. The theme has 9 different wallpapers that will change everytime you start the PS3. I changed almost every icon into something cartoony.

instantpop 11-10-07, 08:56 PM Really wish the compiler program worked on a Mac. I'd love to make some themes for my PS3. They need an OSX version of the software.

Megalith 11-11-07, 02:09 PM They're decent. At the very least, they're consistent. But the "digital" theme is way, way, WAY too bright. I had the feeling that the lamp in my RP was going to explode when I tried it out.
That MGS theme up top is the perfect example of your lame cookie-cutter video game theme. Why is it that whenever people design wallpaper, they paste a video game character on top of a 3D design that has nothing to do with anything?
I was pleased to find out last night that you could turn the ugly ticker off.

Ouch. I for one like that MGS theme, that transition is cool. Lame cookie cutter?...sorry but thats a ****** way of looking at it. As far as I'm concerned I hope both official and un-official themes keep coming, variety and creativity is never a bad thing. Sure yull have some crap theme's, but its not like you cant change it if you don't like it. I mean isn't that the point of customizable themes to begin with?
seanpatrickb 11-11-07, 03:55 PM I like that MGS theme too. I think most of them are pretty good, i mean what do you really expect? I think the official ones don't really look any better than most of the user created ones, probably worse, except for that light art one. If you think you can do better the tools are right there to do so.

very cool. what do you name your wallpapers in the 01 folder before compiling? I see a_HD, b_HD, and c_HD.jpg. do I just name them a, b, c, d and so on? And what size backgrounds are you using? Will it stretch to fit if less than 1980X1080?

If you do that, I believe you'll have to add those lines to the .xml file as well... The background section is at the bottom of the file.
Conspiracy* 11-12-07, 01:48 PM Wow. Either you guys are all awesome, or this is really easy. I'll have to try my hand. Would it be possible to create a theme for say 4 or 5 different final fantasy games and have the icons and background on a random cycle each time you restarted? Or is it just the background that cycles?
Hellsya69 11-12-07, 01:53 PM Well I got the customization to work but I would like to know where you guys are getting these great icons from? Are you guys drawing them from scratch or pulling them from some sort of database. So far all i have been able to do is take the original items and change the colors and effects but nothing to fancy. Any help as always is apreciated.

It isn't too difficult at all.
The backgrounds can be on a cycle... I don't think the icons can be. The backgrounds can cycle each time you turn on your PS3 with up to 16 different images.
The backgrounds apparently NEED to be less then 1.0mb or they will not work.
There is an XML file that runs the show here... it is compiled by the PT3 compiler PC program (no mac compiler yet)...
I'd imagine you could play with the XML file to see what the PS3 would allow you to do.
TyrantII 11-12-07, 03:22 PM +1 to whoever can figure out how to get custom animations, either in the background or on top of it, into these themes!
I'd love to see variations on the PS3 default theme!
freestyle 11-12-07, 03:55 PM ^^ How do you think the background default ribbons are made... I really don't think it is looping video... but maybe it is...
Whatever that asset is, it is definitely hidden somewhere in the OS... and there's nothing pointing to that (that I can see) in the .xml file for compiling the themes.
freestyle 11-12-07, 04:02 PM Someone built a simplified front end theme builder... Check it out, seems people are having easier times making themes with it.
Download (http://www.mediafire.com/?4tba0jiym1g)
Check the readme notes... Makes it simple if you're not comfortable with things like editing an .xml file manually.

Couldn't tell you, possibly a basic partical effect overlayed under the icons? It's pretty similar to the music visualization, so that be my guess. Just have no idea if it can be played with in the xml file or not.
freestyle 11-12-07, 06:37 PM OK... I figured 'What the hell?' I just tried my hand at making one... I created one with my Clan as the theme.

It can be done VERY, VERY fast... The only time it takes is to do your graphics... I used the sample theme's XMB graphics as a base... and just enhanced...
...two interesting things to note... There is a "TV" top/horizontal row XMB icon that is not used yet... but it is there in the theme... There's also a Playstation Home Icon too!

It is somewhat easy. Trust me, if I can do it......
Question. Once I add the extra backgrounds, will they stretch to fit on the PS3 or do all the backgrounds need to be 1980x1080? I'm having a hard time finding images that large.
I haven't made my theme available yet since its just the icons. If I add the background, it has nasty black bars so I have to manually set it as the background, stretching it to fit.
Help mah! ;)
EDIT: How do I open the xml file for editing? I can open it but I can't change/add anything.
I am looking forward to giving this a shot. There are a few different theme ideas I want to do.
By the way, I love your HL2 theme Cysquatch. I really hope you make it available for download, because I know I want it.

Yeah... the backgrounds are supposed to be 1920X1080. Use the one in the sample file as your template and just create something to that size... You'll also need the smaller SD background too.
I'm not sure what will happen if your size is off... it may stretch or just fail. From what I've heard you just need to make sure the bkg files are not larger than 1.0 mb.
You can edit the .xml file in any text editor.
Conspiracy* 11-13-07, 11:15 AM Ok Im going to try this out but have a few questions. I am very newbish when it comes to stuff like this.
I've downloaded the program and have the theme file open.
1. Where do I name my theme? Just rewrite in the theme folder under name?
2. So this is the sample theme code here <icon id="icon_user" src="Icons.6.png" /> If I want to change the user icon I would just download a picture and save it as a .png file? Lets say I wanted to download a picture of Cloud and have that be my icon. What size should it be? Does resolution matter? Would I just save it somewhere in documents and rewrite it like this:
<icon id="icon_user" src="Cloud.png" /> ?
Thx.
I think it's easier just to rename your pictures to what is being called for in the xml rather than rewrite the xml to match the names of your pictures.
freestyle 11-13-07, 12:37 PM whoa... keep it simple...
Use the SAMPLE files as your base... Keep the same names and just replace the pictures and then save them. That way you keep the size and relation to each file called out in the .xml in tact.
For naming the theme simply change a few values in the .xml
<infotable>
<info
name="Name Your Theme"
icon="icon.png"
url="http://www.YourWebPage.com/"
author="Your Name"
authoricon="authoricon.png"
genre="Your Genre"
version="version 1.0 <-- Your version"
comment="this is a sample theme."
preview="preview.png"
/>
<localizedinfo
locale="en"
name="Your Theme Name"
/>
<localizedinfo
locale="jp"
name="サンプル"
comment="これはサンプルテーマファイルです。"
/>
</infotable>
The "localizedinfo" area is what controls the name of the theme when it shows up to install...
You can leave the rest of the .xml file in tact (name it whatever you want). But all the images called out in the theme are pointing to those sample items... So as long as you change the sample item graphics to what you want and retain the name... everything will keep pointing in the right direction... You COULD change each and every name of both the files and the .xml links... but that seems like overkill.
One other area you MAY want to mess with:
<bgimagetable>
<bgimage hd="a_HD.jpg" sd="a_SD.jpg" />
<bgimage hd="b_HD.jpg" sd="b_SD.jpg" />
<bgimage hd="c_HD.jpg" sd="c_SD.jpg" />
</bgimagetable>
<font selection="2" />
<color selection="4" />
Those 3 bg images mean that the backgrounds you provide as a, b and c will rotate cycle with each log in... Meaning, it allows you to have a different bkg each time the PS3 is turned on...
You can have up to 16 bkgs... I'd assume you'd have to copy paste the additional lines in the xml and associate the appropriate file name up to 16.
In the font selection you can set the default font of your theme... I think there are only 3 (or 4) choices... You can see what they are in the PDF that comes with the compiler.
The color selection is the original XMB background animated ribbon... If you use the original bkg, it will set the color (i believe). You have 11 choices... also shown in the PDF.
After that... make sure the xml file is in the directory with all your images... Drag that xml file on to the compiler application... let it compile... And a .P3T file will be created in there.
Then just take that .P3T file to your PS3 and put it on a thumb drive in the USBTHUMB>PS3>THEME>your.P3T
Go to the XMB theme settings and say install... it will look in that folder... and.. there you go!

I didn't change the font, but I changed the background color to 11. That is the coffee/brown tint to the original bkg animated swirling ps3 ribbon thing...
If you load your custom theme, you can change the wallpaper bkg individually to another picture OR to original... And that's where the brown showed up for me. It worked as I had thought... however I don't know if I did it right or if it was just an amazing coincidence. :)
Also, I find that if I take the wallpaper background brightness down to -3 in the PS3 theme setting options it makes most all themes look better. That new feature to dim the bkg was sorely needed to save you from having to test a million different brightness settings on your pictures before loading them on your PS3.
The best part of this (for me) is how you can change the upper right notification graphic. In my theme I make it a more graphical golden border. When messages pop up they look REALLY cool!
...unfortunately, when you're in a game it uses the default PS3 notification look.

Yea, the notification box will take whatever png you use and stretch it. I used an empty HL2 icon and it looked pretty cool all stretched out. I also changed the pointer finger to the vanilla HL2 icon shrunk down to 64x64. Looks bitchin' in the PS Store.
The longest part of the process for me was to map out all the icons and then resize every one to 128x128. What a pain in the ass but it turned out pretty cool.
And no, there's no rhyme nor reason to some of the icons I picked. I tried to make them somewhat relate to what they represented but some I just picked because of the colors, coolness factor, etc.

Great theme Cysquatch, I am using your theme with a different wallpaper I found and edited for the PS3 XMB.

neojubei 11-13-07, 09:52 PM Awesome theme, Cysquatch. Even though I love the okami one, yours has so much style and class.
Here is a good site to find some cool themes.

LOL. Nice wallpaper. One way to check all my backgrounds is to load my theme and then goto the background section and select "original" and then change back to the theme background. Its random so it may take awhile to see all 8. There's a funny one in there with combine lying on the ground dead in the shape of the HL2 logo. :D
Thanks all for the compliments. Once I figure out how to cycle the backgrounds live (ala a slideshow every 5min), i'll update. There HAS to be a way to do it. Same with the font. The HL2 font would be a great addition too.
Slacker George 11-14-07, 08:52 PM PSU has a searchable theme section now.

The best part is they're kept in .p3t format so you can browse and download straight from your PS3.
Link to uplaod your own themes (http://www.psu.com/uploadtheme.php) (you have to sign up to PSU first).
Today PSU.com launched their very own PS3 themes section. For all the PlayStation 3 owners out there, here can be your one central source for the latest PS3 themes.
Currently the design is basic. The themes can be uploaded by the users through this link. Requirements are as follows:
- Must have a title
- Description
- Preview Image
Over the next few days, PSU.com will be adding new additions and upgrades to the PS3 themes section such as "Credit to original author", " ability to add multiple screenshots of theme", and a "rating system". If you want to know how to create your own themes, you can read up on it here.
Here are links to the Themes:

anonymouscuban 11-30-07, 01:29 AM Check out the theme I created with pictures of my Pug Puppies. The screen shots are a little over exposed but it looks fantastic on the display.
There are seven backgrounds in all, both in HD and SD format. I've added a link to the theme at PSU.COM in case you want to download it. Has anyone else tried creating their own theme? If so, post it.
