I have a PS3, and I am considering purchasing the PlayStation Eye camera. I see that it is USB, so can I use this on my PC as a webcam? I don't have a webcam and I thought this might kill 2 birds with one stone. Thanks.

View Full Version : PlayStation Eye for PC? gte747e 11-10-07, 01:42 PM I have a PS3, and I am considering purchasing the PlayStation Eye camera. I see that it is USB, so can I use this on my PC as a webcam? I don't have a webcam and I thought this might kill 2 birds with one stone. Thanks. Luthyr 11-10-07, 01:57 PM I don't believe one is available yet. There is an unofficial driver for the old PS2 EyeToy, so I would think that someone will make an unofficial driver for the PlayStation Eye in the future. It's hard to say when. Rock Daddy 11-10-07, 02:55 PM When I plug mine in win xp sees it as a USB Camera-B4.04.27.1 but it wants a driver disk or it won't work. I assume someone will come up with something in the not to distant future. gte747e 11-10-07, 03:20 PM Ok, thanks for the responses. I may wait a while then. Would you say the quality of the Eye is equal to or better than the "average" web cam? ppshooky 02-16-10, 07:49 PM Does this still not work on a PC? Or, how about the reverse? If I were to get a Logitech camera with better resolution, would it work the PS3? And, would the resolution work better? tgable 02-16-10, 07:58 PM It works great on the PC, better than any crappy webcam. http://codelaboratories.com/downloads/ http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/2921/ Martez 02-16-10, 09:41 PM Yeah, AlexP's driver works great and I'm really surprised by the quality the camera is capable of. Makes me wonder why anything you take with it on the PS3 looks like ass. SeldomSeen31 02-17-10, 12:23 PM It works well for me for the most part, but when ever I try to adjust the video settings in Skype, Skype crashes. So I'm not sure what resolution I'm getting with the camera in Skype. I haven't used it with any other applications on my pc except the ps eye testing program included with the drivers. All resolutions and frame rates work well there. I don't have another camera to use with skype to see if it is a skype issue or a driver issue. My guess is the later though. ppshooky 02-17-10, 03:10 PM Has anyone tested a higher end webcam on the PS3? My wife, on the request of my sister-in-law, wants to get a webcam. So, I figured I could get one that can be used by the PS3 and the PC and has pretty good quality. I would think the Playstation Eye would "look like ass," as Martez pointed out, on the PS3 because of the native resolution on the Eye being 640x480 and being blown up to fit the HD resolution of the TV. Vortex3D 02-17-10, 04:24 PM What about the stereo microphones on the PS3 Eye? X360 Vision camera is compatible with PS3. While the picture quality is much lower than PS3 Eye, it produces better picture quality on PS3 than X360. If picture quality isn't the most important and you want a cheap USB camera that is compatible with PS3, you can find X360 Vision camera sometimes for $10. It probably will get cheaper when Nadal comes out which is just stereo cameras. |
