I need to p\replace my tv and it seems that the magazines and displays at stores show alot of projectors. My room is 23x30 although a pool table limits the distance from seat to screen. I also have a large wall where to project. Do i buy a projector or a plasma. Is the quality there for projectors? I also like the idea of saving space.
thank you

When I made my theatre, I had a Panasonic 50" Plasma and the Mits HD1000...
after about 2 weeks I didn't use my plasma and after 4 months of it sitting around I sold it. However, I only average 10-12 hours of TV a week so I think I made the right decision. If you have kids or leave the TV on for 8 hours a day, a projector may not be the way to go....

If you are able to control how much light is in the room then go with a projector. For the ultimate in space savings it is the way to go. Some of the things to think about are the size of the screen, where you can mount the PJ, and if anything is in the light path from the PJ. As for size if the image/cost ratio... it is the best bang for the buck. A 100" plasme/LCD display would cost you an arm and a leg, and do they even exsist yet?

Few things to also remember is the video source. Since most PJ's don't have a tuner, you need to pipe in a TV signal via a VCR, Sat TV or Cable box.

enjoy... I know I like my projector set-up.

Well, you really have to ask yourself what you will use it for. The ultimate, main reason to get a projector is screen size. If you want something bigger than 60 inches then you have to go with a projector. If you don't want something that big, then honestly a plasma or lcd might be the way to go. I don't particularly see any advantage to a projector is you are going to have a screen that small. There are issues with light and space with projectors that you just don't have to worry about with "self contained" TV's. But if you want a huge image, then there is reason to work around these issues, if you don't care that much about size, then you may not want the hassle of controlling the room light (which is the main limitation of front projectors).

Hate to tell you this, but the answer is both

I use the projector for movies, sports and all other hi def, and a small lcd (32 inch) for the news and what-not. Nothing beats the ease of just turning on the lcd, but then again nothing beats watching movies on a 104 inch screen.

Besides, for what a GOOD 50 inch costs these days, you can buy both.

I'm on board with Salin...

I'm doing my family room/theater re-model right now and I'm doing both a Plasma and a Projector.. I have an EDTV Panny 42" plasma that's being mounted on the wall for the kids to leave Hanna Montana and Drake and Josh play in continuous loop all day. At $350+ per replacement bulb, I'd rather not waste the bulb life using Nickelodeon or Disney channel as background noise.

When it's time for me to watch sporting events, HD content, or movie nights, I'll be pulling down a 106-120" screen (not sure what size yet) in front of the plasma.

When I got this grand idea last year, the challenge was finding an AVR for under $1,000 that had two HD monitor outputs (either component or HDMI), but now there are a few notible ones to be had for well under $1000.. the Denon AV-888 and the Onkyo 705 come to mind.. both do upconversion of any input to both a component and and HDMI output... I ran both HDMI and component cables to the Plasma and the PJ, so I'll be able to choose which one get's component and which gets the HDMI. I'll be able to switch between the two displays quite easily once I pick up a Harmony remote. (gotta make it easy for the wife and kids to use.. )

I picked up the Denon 888 for a steal a few weeks ago from Circuit City. They had shipping problems getting the Denon AV-788 advertised in their sale ad that week, and were honoring the 788's sale price by giving away the AV-888 at the AV-788's advertized sale price.. right place at the right time I guess.. :)

Go with both.. pick up a cheap ED or HD plamsa display 46" or less for background noise, kids shows, or news viewing and get a decent projector for the movie/HD viewing experience. I bet you could get both a decent plasma or LCD in that size and a very nice 720p Panasonic projector and screen for under $2500 easily...

I also prefer having the 50" Plasma for everyday use and the 119" screen for movies, etc.
