I emailed sony about this and got the following very unsatisfactory response:

Message from Consumer:
Hi,

I want to start by saying that I love the PS3. It's an amazing piece of hardware with some great
software.

That said, could you please update the flash player in the browser? There are a lot of great sites
that can't be accessed with the current browser setup - rendering the web browsing experience quite
frustrating and crippled.

Thanks,

The response:

Thank you for writing us.

We apologize for any inconvenience, however, certain websites that require special media players or
additional software/plug-ins to access content on the website might not be accessible with the
Internet Browser on the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system. The PLAYSTATION 3 system is
unable to install software that has not been officially tested nor approved by Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA). Please contact the webmaster of the website you are attempting to
access to determine whether there is an alternate method for accessing content on that particular
site.

Have you done this? With what version of linux? What version of flash?

I tried this but couldn't find a version of flash that was compatible. Edit: more precisely I couldn't find a version of flash that was compatible and could play pandora.com, hulu.com, or the like.

What were you expecting?

Something more along the lines of "we are working on this issue and hope to incorporate the newer version of flash in the coming months".

Canned responses that don't really even address my question don't really do it for me.

Anyhow, at least they know there's some interest.

Heh. There isn't a usable browser, much less Flash Player in the PS3. This is from someone whose PC went south and had to rely strictly on the PS3's browser w/BT mouse+KB for 2mos.

I’d have to agree.

Was using it the other day, and the functionality is horrible, if you go to a site with a lot of media or the cache fills it will freeze, many normal websites won’t load because the browser doesn’t understand active x, java, and another standard web languages, and downloading and watching movies is a pain as you have to dl to the HD to view, or it buffers just about the entire thing to play back, then does so again if you rewind it.

They really need to implement an open source option.

I installed gnash (a "version" of flash) on Yellowdog but it played youtube videos and thats about it. Were you able to get a flash player to work properly? I may consider reinstalling Linux if that's the case.

I think that people "think" you can do a lot of things with Linux on the PS3 that you can't. I've seen two posts now telling me to install flash with linux, but neither replied when I asked them how they did it. That being said, if there IS a way to do it (and watch Hulu.com, ABC.com, NBC.com, pandora.com, etc.) I'd love to find out how.

Some people would use a time machine to go back in time and get Hitler, stop Pearl Harbor, etc.
Me? I would stop Adobe Flash from becoming the defacto standard for the internet.
One of the least supported platforms around.
If they don't make money from it, Adobe could care less about.
No flash in iPhone/Touch, Windows Mobile, and prop browsers like PS3 and Wii.
Don't get me started on them not being able to develop a 64bit version in the year 2008.

I've got a couple of interet radio sites working, but Pandora seems to hang up (on YDL 6)

Adobe's Linux flash plugin is only for x86 platforms (intel/amd). They don't make one that will run on cell so there is no ps3 linux support. And I don't think the open source flash players are quite up to the task yet. Sony is probably in a bit of a bind here. I would guess Adobe did the port for the ps3 browser and probably need to do any updates. Sony probably doesn't have direct control over this. I see there is a beta of flash 10 now (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/), if we are lucky maybe they are just skipping 9 and waiting for 10. (wishful thinking)

The main thing is you have to find the sites that work and stick to them.

I use youtube and I LOVE Surfthechannel. It has EVERYTHING.

As we know, Adobe Flash Player can't be installed on PS3.
So if you need to view flash/swf files on your PS3, you need to convert them at first.
I am now using this program: Aunsoft SWF to Go.
Its name is strange but can help you convert swf/flash files to videos compatible with many kinds of digital devices such as PS3, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, Zune, Xbox360, BlackBerry, Mobile Phone, PPC, etc.
What's more, you can choose the profile just according to the specific device such as iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, Zune, etc. to get the right format.
I like it as its name"AUN' is like a smile and looks sweet.

Sorry, you won't be able to top the Warbonds thread.

edit: I just installed the program and it filled my harddrive with pr0ns. Highly recommended!
