View Full Version : What to tell a 7 year old you bought her a PS3 instead of a Wii?

Well, here is my dilema:
Thanks to this forum I just bought a PS3 at Kmart for $320. My 7year old daughter was told that Santa was bringing her a Wii, because that's what her friends had and what she really wanted.
Not a gamer myself at all, how do I convince her PS3 is a better present? or should I take back the PS3 to get a Wii?
BTW does the 40GB PS3 come with some games in the box?
Thanks for input from you pros here.

Just tell her you're a bad father that listens to complete strangers more than he will his own daughter. :)

J/K

If she wants a Wii, take the PS3 back....she'll probably find more games (new games that is) that she'll like for the Wii.

I think your intentions are good by getting a PS3...but you have to put yourself in her shoes. All her friends have a Wii and it seems like that is the gift she really wants. I say keep the PS 3 for yourself, there are some great games out/coming out plus you get the Blu-Ray player factor. Sounds like she has her heart set on a Wii though....just my .02

You better get a Wii too, man. If you can not afford both..then you have to pick up the Wii. You will not convince her of anything at her age. She want's a Wii.. and thats the bottom line!!! And no games with the 40 gb, only Spiderman 3 on B/D.

your daughter will LOVE the Wii! I have a 6 & 7 year old and they both absolutely Love It!

Take the PS3 back or keep it for yourself, (I mean that's who you bought it for anyway, right?) and get your daughter the wii. I am no gamer, but I have fun playing games on the Wii with my little ones, and so will you.

Unless you want your little girl to call you a selfish prick, get the Wii.

I have a Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 and a 5yo daughter. Guess which system she has NEVER played? The PS3.

Consider how much you would use it and enjoy and see if its worth the fallout. Your guys kids are seriously spoiled. :D Plus, if all her friends have one, why does she need one of her own.... Obviously if you can afford it get both, i'm almost tempted to get a Wii just for Mario Galaxy. She'll probably only play wii sports for it, then forget about it in less than a year. If shes not like that though, you may just have to get the wii.

Wow, there are some harsh responses here.

But I'm going to have to re-echo the going sentiment: take the PS3 back. Trust us, there's not much on it for a 7-year-old girl (now or in the foreseeable future).

If you start hunting now, you may be able to find a Wii. But if you were willing to shell out more for the PS3, you should also be willing to shell out the extra dough for a Wii being sold online at a markup.

Another option is to get her a Nintendo DS (if she doesn't already have one). It has a very similar appeal, it's relatively inexpensive, and there's some great content for her demographic.

Wow, i think thats by far the best answer yet. You should keep the PS3 for yourself and get her a DS, assuming she doesn't already have one. If she does, its back to square one.

I don't have any children of age, but I am currently operating under the "no console for children" policy. There are a lot of other things they could be doing. Thats not to say they won't have access to mine, but they won't receive one of their own.

With that being said, no Wii for her! I would of course try to sell her on why "she" got a PS3 instead:

1) Play Wii at your friends house.
2) PS3 will cure cancer.
3) You can grow into the PS3.
4) Cartoon movies will look better (assuming you have an HD set)

If you can afford it, and if you have a HDTV already, then i say keep the PS3 for blu-ray playback (cars and Ratatouille are out on BD as well as Planet earth).

Also, you may find that she will gravitate to the quality games coming out for the PS3 such as LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank and also the many PS-Eye games that will be coming.

If you can afford both PS3 and Wii, i think you will find entertainment (and educational) content for you and your daughter.
:)
P.s. i also love the parental control features of the PS3, since i do not have a Wii i don't know how restrictive you can make the child's experience.
P.p.s also if you do keep the PS3, do your self a favor and get the BD-remote and the PS-Eye (not the Ps2-eyetoy), the remote is better of playing DVDs or BD movies and the eye can be used for video chats and games, both cost about $80 together.

There is games right here right now, already released that are only on PS3 and should keep you entertained with the unit. Plus u got a hell of a DEAL! I camped 3 days and paid 600+ on day 1!

Anyway, back to topic. Wii and PS3 would be a great combination. Now you also have a great selection from a multiplatform titles also! Plus Blu Ray/DVD/PS1. Also not to mention that if u cant afford some High end pc gaming PS3 will suit you just fine!

Wow, I think this is a really lame move. But heck we all have our lapses. I own all three and I can tell you that I love games and I love Hi-Def movies. I play 0 games on my PS3. I enjoy many games on my wii. I work with children and they love the wii. The PS3 is a big misfire on Sony's part. I think it is a great piece of CE but the games are just alright.

The Wii could make your daughter really happy. I don't have children but I do know that if I told my kid that they were getting something for christmas and I could afford it....they would get it. You got yourself something you wanted and are going to pass it off to your child under the guise that it's better than what they want. But in all honesty I do not know of a single thing a 7 year old would be able to cognitively handle on that system...maybe watch a movie...but does a kid really care of it's vhs or BD?? I say don't make a mistake....we only live once and this could mean a lot to your daughter. Get the wii and put some more stash away for the PS3 and buy it next summer.

That Daddy spoke to Santa and said to bring Daddy his favorite toy instead..,

Kidding aside, why did you? A 7-year is going to enjoy a Wii way more than a PS3 at this point. If you can afford only one right now, get the Wii now and save up for a PS3 later. We have both and the PS3 is cool and the Blue-Ray DVD player is great (we use it more than the game console) but the Wii is definitely the main kid console.

I have to agree the use of video games during young developmental ages can promote the occurrence of autistic behaviors. I do think the Wii might fall outside of that box though depending on the games selected. Many of the games require more physical activity that keeps your mind from getting into that weird videogame haze

Is this the same guy who asked before if she'd be happy with a PS3 when she really wanted a Wii? lol He didn't listen to us.

She won't be happy and you can't con her into being happy. Why? She wants on the Wii fad. She does not want a system on it's merits or power. She wants one called a "Wii" cause everyone else has or wants one.

Wii style gameplay can't be emulated on the PS3 at the moment either.

Keep the PS3. It's a man's toy. Enjoy it! Grab the gal a Wii before x-mas and that shall be that.

No need to convince her the PS3 is better. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to say the PS3 is better than the Wii when you're talking about a system for a 7 year old.
If her friends all have a Wii, why would you get her a PS3? So when all her friends want to come over and bring their Wii games, they can't? Do you like seeing her cry and complain and throw it aside on Christmas morning?

Anyways, get her what she wants. That's like saying all her friends are into Bratz, but you're going to buy her a Barbie because you think Barbie is better...nevermind the fact she doesn't like or want Barbie.

So at what age does one start prefering a system like PS3 over Wii?

Picking up the Wii was a good choice. Keep the PS3 for your movies and games and and kids will be thrilled with all of the wacky wiimote stuff.

The Wii is for all of the Mario-themed, Wiimote novelty games and other Kid-friendly games. Anything that comes out multi-platform tends to be aimed at older age groups and those I buy for ps3 or 360. Games like "Ratatouille" where you have to walk around and look using both controllers at the same time can be hard to pick up, but Smooth Moves, Cooking Mama and Carnival games are fun.

Kids won't lose sleep over the resolution, or lossless audio and I think that the game choices are much more kid-friendly for Wii.

For right now, we are watching more BD movies for kids than HD with all of the Pixar and Disney releases.

As for "hardcore" coments about Santa - movies alone give you too much to deal with. Be careful with Polar Express. As always watch the movies with your kids - explaining the first chapter of Meet the Robinsons, for example.

When I was a kid in 1978, I felt extraordinarily fortunate to get a $15 X-wing fighter for Christmas. Later I bought my first console (the Atari VCS) plus Space Invaders using money I'd saved up from my paper route. Maybe I'm a little old-fashioned, but the idea that parents are giving next-gen consoles as gifts has me scratching my head.

Now, if parents are buying the consoles for their kids as a pretense to play it for themselves... I guess that's a different story. ;)

When I was 8, my folks bought an Atari 5200 as a "family" gift. So everyone from mom with Ms Pac Man to my little sister who mostly just chewed on the controller had a piece of it.

Luckily for my kids, their old man is already buying all the game systems as they come out, so no need to bother with "saving money" or "begging". :p

On topic, my 3 1/2 year old LOVES Surf's Up on my 360. I don't let him vege with it or anything, but it is hysterical to watch him. He intentionally rams his surfers into obstacles like glaciers, and SCREAMS with laughter every time he does it. The 360 controller is pretty big for his hands, though. I think he'd have an easier time with either the Wii or PS2/3 pads.

Not a gamer yourself - that is your biggest issue here. If you are into gaming and loves PS3 for what it is, your daughter would be somehow influenced in her daily life and well aware of all the consoles, in that case it will be much more easier to convince her a PS3 is way better than a Wii. She will understand more and you can explain better.

If you still want to see if she will love PS3 or not, try play it(games or blu-ray) in front of her without telling her what it is. She NEEDS to be introduced to the console FIRST to like it.

Age got nothing to do with console preference. It is the different gaming habits and love of great visuals get people leaning towards PS3. One can be 40 and still prefer the Wii. BTW don't buy something solely based on the offers given on this forum, most users here are not in the same market as you are - here, PS3 indeed offers more fun than Wii.

Maybe I'm a little old-fashioned, but the idea that parents are giving next-gen consoles as gifts has me scratching my head. You are old fashioned. I got a "next-gen" console for Christmas in 1986. A Nintendo. I was 9. It replaced the "next-gen" console I got for Christmas in 1982. An Atari. I was 5.

In fact, except for the Wii I got for my 30th Birthday from my wife, every "Next Gen" console I ever got was for Christmas. My Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, and Gamecube... And growing up, it was the same for almost all of my buddies.

I think perhaps you are missing the point. In 1982, ColecoVision was the "next-gen" console but the Atari was very age appropriate for you. In this case a PS3 or XBOX 360 is not appropriate for this guy's daughter, while a Wii is.

Now PS3 has some great games, at least the ones that are out now.

So I don't see how It does not have any... Are alright.. I mean Ratchet Is Great, so is COD4, R6, GRAW2, HS, MotorStorm, Resistance and few others... It has the games. Much better than last year.

Agreed I feel that the PS3 as a stand-alone game console is not that great. Many people do not care for the controller(I am one of them). THe games also lack that online community feel that the 360 brings. It is just not a very impressive game machine at this point.

I will say as I have done over and over again. It is the best consumer electronics purchase that I have ever made. Blu-Ray, CD, SACD, DVD, files from my computer, adult interface....It's a great machine and I'm very happy to own one...not for the games though. Rachet is great but I have personally felt that the EXCLUSIVES have pailed when compared to what's on the 360: Gears of War, Halo 3, Bioshock, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, PGR4, Forza, Crackdown....and I'm just naming what you can get now..

I was 5.Well, first off, the Atari VCS console wouldn't have been "next-gen" in 1982... though perhaps you're referring to the 5200, which was kind of entering its generation late in the game. Moreover, at the time you received them neither the Nintendo nor the Atari systems would have cost as much as a PS3 or 360, even in adjusted dollars. Maybe it shouldn't bug me so much, and maybe I'm just jealous that I had to work for every console I've ever owned... so be it. I just think it's a little excessive to spend so much on a kid's gift.

So yes, you are old fashioned.I'll take that as a compliment from a denizen of my former home town.

So yes, you are old fashioned.

That first Christmas in 86 when all my friends got Nintendos, I got an Atari XE.....lol

To the OP, keep the PS3 for yourself, you'll love it.

Screw that...tell her you got a PS3 because it was more techically awesome than than the wii...get her Rachet and Clank and she will be happy...

Get her some disney blurays and she will also be happy...if you bought the PS3 from Kmart this week, it only cost you $319.99!

Yeah, I saw a girl about that age playing that game - so this may work. :)

I hope you're kidding right?...

I didn't see it mentioned here so I'll chime in. I have four children under the age of 11 that use the family PS3 extensively. The PS3 game library is starting to get there with R&C and several of the downloadable (cheap) kiddie games.

Since we only let them play a fixed amount every week, they spend most of their time on the vast number of PS2 kids games that we have accumlated over the years. We have the 60G version so compatibility isn't a problem. Given that the PS2 library is 8000+ games there are plenty of fun games for kids.

After I put them to bed I can play Resistance, Warhawk or whatever as long as i keep the bass down.

Also, the PS3 is great for watching all our home movies and pictures. And of course, the Disney BRDs are favorites in our house. Last night we watched Ratatouille which was a big hit with all except my wife who was pretty grossed out by the idea of rats in a kitchen.

What I like best about the PS3 is that it is very flexible and can easily satisfy everyone in my family.

Prepare for tears. Lots of them. On Christmas morning. Sound good?

PS3 back. Wii under tree. +1. You could still keep the PS3. Either way, you need a wii under that tree. It's a much better machine for a 7 year old.
