I have a G70 with around 4300 hrs on it. It still has a great picture however, the tubes look worn. I am debating whether I should invest in new tubes or sell it as I do not have the time to converge tweak etc...
What would new tubes cost?? Also would 2000 Canadian be a fair price? I have the 1272 switcher with 4 or 5 ifb cards in it.

Why is it that all of these semi newbies are coming around here posting semi for sale ads lately???? Sheesh!
eBay is your friend and will tell you that a worn G70 isn't worth anywhere near $2K. Good luck on that.

Curt there is no need to be condescending & rude. My question was 2 fold. One was regarding the availablilty of tubes locally and their cost and the other was to get a sense of what one might be worth if I decide to sell.
It is my belief that there aren't too many of these in Toronto and the costs to ship etc.. might not be of interest to someone who might also want to check it out before purchasing. It is also my beleif that there are alot of scammers on ebay and many will not ship to Canada due to costs and the reasons I have stated above.
It's funny how you are quick to say that 2000 is not what it\s worth when you yourself are advertising 2 on your site one for 1800 and the other for 3300...
Perhaps you should throw them on ebay to see their real worth!

1. When you say "I have a G70 I'm thinking of selling, is $2k a fair price?" -- that's a stealth ad. Which is not allowed here, which is why Curt nailed you.
2. There is an ENORMOUS difference between some unknown guy in Toronto selling a G70 with worn tubes, and Curt Palme (a VERY well known and respected reseller) selling a G70, even if it DOES have worn tubes. Curt refurbs his machines, warrantees them, and supports them after the sale with support, board swaps, etc. Curt can justifiably charge 50-100% more than an arbitrary G70 owner can, and plenty of people are happy to pay his price because he's providing a helluva lot more than you are.
3. He DOES post his machines on ebay, and sells quite a few that way. See #2.

I was probably being a bit condescending, I'll give you that, but there have been a LOT of newbie posts here recently posing these 'stealth' ads as Gary says. THere's a marketplace here for selling a set.
But the rest of the post is accurate. eBay at this point is the scale by which you should expect pricing to be set at. Go into the completed auction section and do a search for G70s. They are going for about $500 USD, sometimes less.
New tubes range $750-1000 USD each from Sony, way more from Sony Canada last time I checked, a bit less from VDC if you're willing to do some work with the retubing yourself.

I just looked on ebay, and the only G70 that's sold recently (except yours, Curt :)) went for $399. But that was with unknown-condition tubes, no idea if it ran, and no remote. On the other hand a supposedly-83-hr unit didn't sell for $1800 (ouch). I hope a well-documented listing with pictures of no- or low-wear tubes would bring in well more than $500, but maybe not.
When it's time to sell my G70, I don't plan to use ebay. In addition to all the other problems of ebay, I don't think it's a good way to reach qualified buyers -- at least not for individual non-pro sellers. I think I'd get a better price on other sites like videogon or AVS.
There's a lot of crts, and crt owners, in the GTA area. Yours is the second G70 I know of.

Well its not just newbies. I recollect a recent post by a long time avs'r looking for a "win-win" and no bottom dwellers need apply.
I'm not sure of the context of condescending - but in my mind the collective membership of avs'rs were more condescending there than here.
I agree that all for sale should be in the marketplace and these type posts should be deleted.
