hi,
searched the forums but didnt find any info on that...
i ve got a macbook with leopard installed. in addition to that,i ve got vista installed.
recently i bought an 5.1 system, connected that to my dolby/dts receiver,
and connected the macbook via toslink to the receiver. leopard dvd player switched to spdif out, but then really strange things happened. one time, my receiver got an digital 5.1 (dts) signal but down mixed that to stereo. next time, there was still a digital connection, but the signal that arrived in the receiver, was a stereo signal...i dont get it. Vista(via Bootcamp) is perfectly capable of outputting 5.1, everything works fine there. so whats up with leopard??tried everything...maybe i didnt find a preference for that?
sorry for my english!
and thanx in advance for every answer!!
bye,
kons

Leopard dvd player on a Macbook passes DD 5.1 and DTS perfectly. Make sure you know where to look:

Apple dvd player > Preferences > Disc setup > Audio output--what options do you see there?

no more settings...but i will look when im home...

ah! one more setting: something like "crc dolby" to adjust something with the loudness of the signal...

right, and within dvdplayer preferences on your Macbook what you want to see there are two options:

System sound output
Digital Out--Built-in Output

and to get the DD/DTS 5.1 pass through you should select the latter.

Under:

System preferences > Sound > Output

it should only say "Digital Out--Built-in Output"

If:

1) you've checked those preferences, and
2) your AVR doesn't switch to digital when you select a 5.1 DD/DTS track of a video_ts or dvd in your macbook, and
3) you've verified through other means (Bootcamp/Windows) that the cable and adaptor tip you have are good,
4) and it happens with every dvd you pop in the drive and every video_ts file

I don't know what to tell you. There can only be one active digital out on a Mac at a time, it can be tricky sometimes to switch between, say, EyeTV and Appledvdplayer, trying to use digital outs for each program, most of the time it happens seamlessly, sometimes EyeTV locks onto it, you may have to open and close a program, sometimes you have to switch away to a different source input on your AVR, then back to your Macbook input, to get your AVR to recognize the digital audio again.

But there's nothing in Leopard or with a Macbook that's a problem.
