i want to know before i pull the trigger on this one. i don't want another "troy" of "FMJ" fiasco where i buy the first release and 2 months later they come out with a new one :(

I don't see any reason why Universal would pick this particular title to double-dip this early. It looks/sounds great (compared to previous releases... this isn't Hot Fuzz, but it's the best 12 Monkeys has ever looked).

It also contains all of the (great) supplements from the Laserdisc/DVD editions.

To double-dip, they'd have to improve the quality (unlikely) or create new supplements (equally unlikely, given how good the commentary/documentary is). I think you're safe with a purchase.

why would you buy the first FMJ with the PQ being so poor to begin with?

With the hundreds of movies out there waiting for an HD release it's going to be a long, long, long, long time before 12 MONKEYS gets a "double dip." Plus, there's nothing wrong with the new release -- so why would you expect another one?

I would go ahead and purchase without hesitation.

What was wrong with the first issue of 12Monkeys?
Looked OK to me!
How much better do you think it can look?

i'm an extras whore, so i'm afraid they might release a director's cut or something with more footage and extras.

There are some very thorough extras on the release, long and informative.

Oh!

Yeah I hate when they do that AFTER you buy.
But I guess that's how studios make money :D
They want you to double dip! :(

Again, I think you're safe. I have to assume from these comments that you've never seen the extras on this set. If you had, you wouldn't be worried about the double-dip.

Even though they are 10 years old (released with the laserdisc in early 1997), they are pretty much definitive. You have a great directors commentary and a feature-length, in depth documentary. To this day, it's one of the best movie docus I've ever seen.

Gilliam has always seemed satisfied with how this movie turned out. I don't see him revisiting it for any sort of alternate cut, nor do I see Universal being able to (or even wanting to) create more extras. This is about as safe of a purchase as you can make for HD DVD.
