What would you guys recommend? My fronts weigh bout 25 pounds and are have a 9x8 base. I can't really even find a stand that can work for a 40 inch bookshelf either.

Personally I prefer stands when possible, because you aren't commited to any speaker placement and can make minor adjustments whenever you feel like it. Plus a lot of speakers will sound better with a foot or more of space between them and any walls.

However, finding 40" bookshelf stands may be tough. . .

Maybe? It will probably hold the speaker, but it might be kind of precarious.

If you have kids or a dog, then I wouldn't do it.
