For those of you who are not aware, Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/) is a Mac OS X app which scans barcodes of movies and books, etc, and enters them into a visual library.

Get your Mac, a webcam, and Delicious Library and rediscover your home library. Just point any FireWire digital video camera, like an Apple iSight®, at the barcode on the back of any book, movie, music, or video game. Delicious Library does the rest. The barcode is scanned and within seconds the item's cover appears on your digital shelves filled with tons of in-depth information downloaded from one of six different web sources from around the world.

Once your whole library is cataloged, you can find and use your items like never before. Browse, sort, and search through your digital shelves. Sync your cataloged library onto your iPod or print a color catalog and take it with you. Find and purchase new items using Delicious Library's personalized recommendations. Keep track of the items your friends are borrowing using Delicious Library's loan management system, which integrates with Apple's Address Book and iCal.

However, the current version doesn't directly support HD DVD or Blu-ray. Delicious Library 2 does. (http://www.wired.com/software/coolapps/multimedia/2007/10/gallery_deliciouslib2?slide=1&slideView=2)

does this require Leopard?

does this require Leopard?
Yes.

Also, it uses Core Animation, so it will benefit from a Core Image compliant GPU, but I don't know if it will require one.

Core Image GPUs are:

nVidia: GeForce 5200 and up
ATI: Radeon 9550 and up
Intel: GMA 950 and up

Is it free? It would be really cool if there was a way to use this app to play an ISO file stored on your computer.

The windows version isn't free. I think it's $39.99 but well worth it for such a neat utility. I have a large cd, book, video game collection as well, and this utility handles them all!

I use DVDProfiler for windows. does the same thing, You can use a barcode reader or type it in and it'll download them.
Also has a windows pocket pc program too, so you can take your library with you on your pda/smartphone to the store or whatever :)

I have been using Delicious Library for a month. Cool program. I wish Amazon was consistent with their scans though.

And it took all my HDs just fine.

Off to update . . .

Hmm no update yet?

DL2 won't be out for a while, and I think there is an upgrade charge but I'm not sure.

As for that bolded statement, doesn't it list them as DVDs? I wasn't aware of any native HD DVD support in DL1, but I do know one guy had created custom HD DVD icon templates that could work in DL1.

I've been using Delicious Library to track my DVD collection for a couple of years. Wonderful program, but it really is in need of this update. I am very much looking forward to DL2's release! I was hoping it would be released day-and-date with Leopard. But the folks at Delicious Monster say they didn't get the final build or Leopard until after it was released to the public. They won't give a date for the eventual release into the wild, but I suspect it will be within the next 2-3 weeks (strictly a guess on my part).

And, yes, there will be an upgrade charge. And there will be two different versions... the standard, and the pro version with more advanced features.

Yes.

Are you sure? I downloaded it and am using it through demo mode and it works fine (so far) on my iMac with Tiger.

You downloaded Delicious Library 1 (1.6.6). DL2 is not available for download yet.

I'm curious, what is the point of this program for things like DVDs?

I own tons of dvds, hddvd, blu-ray, and dont understand the need to catalog them on the computer? If you want to watch a movie you still have to find it on your shelf anyway...

Indexed searching
Sorting
Email database to others
Sync to iPod
Personal ratings
Catalogue which ones have been loaned to family/friends
Etc.

If you have a large collection and plan on insuring it then it does make it easier. If you have 600 dvds 400 cds 550 cassettes and around 300 books then things can get very complicated. Not sure if you already have that cd or book or dvd? then its easy to just look it up so you dont buy the same thing twice.

That is a pretty good and valid reason I guess. It seems like alot of work just to see another list on the computer. I mean, I have hundreds of dvds and cds, and so far I havent forgotten what I've bought/watched. Usually when I go to buy DVDs, I dont grab a stack of 15 randoms to "build" my collection, but ones that I want.

But if this program works for you, thats all that matters. I'm just too lazy to do all of this organizing stuff.

I too have problems remember if I own a DVD or not.

That said, I never did buy Delicious Library. I wanted more... and much of that seems to be included in version 2. I just wish it didn't cost $40+.

Yeah it just looks cool to me to see the movies on the shelf. I have around 700+ and remember what I have easily, but its a cool way to show off your collection.

And yeah I just scanned in the Blu Close Encounters and it took it fine. I then file it on my Sony/Columbia shelf and Blu Shelf. Same with HD DVDs.

Hmmm... But how did you get it to display the HD DVD packaging?

Last I was aware it had none, except for a hack somebody added later.

Did they add the HD/BD packing to DL1 recently or something?

Well, speaking for myself, space is an issue, so my DVDs are two rows deep on my bookcases. Its very easy to forget what you have, expecially with a large collection.

Delicious Library allows you to browse your collection in a visual way, not just by title. To me, this is a much more stimulating way to be reminded of the forgotten jewels you have hidden in your collection.

No. What I do is simply put the HD/BD covers in as they come - they always have the red HD DVD and blue Blu-ray covers as part of the artwork. So there is also the outline of a DVD case around the HD covers, but in all honesty its nothing too distracting.
