All I know is that it won the academy award.

It's a Fox movie.

However, distribution rights are all over the place on that one. My best guess is to tell you to import it should it come out in Europe.

The original Highlander film has definitely bounced all over the place. In the DVD era, it was originally released by Republic (Artisan/Lionsgate)... but the current release is via Anchor Bay/Starz.

Either way, it seems this is on the blu side at the moment. As for the sequels, TV series, animated stuff, etc... who knows. I really only care about the first film. ;)

Pity, the series is purely epic.

Quite right. Highlander 2 was a joke. Not sure about the rest (if there were any more).

First film was fantastic:)

For me, it goes:

Highlander 1
Highlander: The Series
Highlander: Endgame

That's it. Screw part 2, part 3 and DEFINITELY The Source(Jesus have mercy on my soul, that one was AWFUL).

As I recall, the picture quality of the original film was terrible on DVD, one of the worst that I have ever seen. I would be concerned that this film might not benefit as much from the high def treatment as we have become accustomed to.

The ass-tastic first release on DVD was, in fact, one of the worst major releases ever. But that was largely corrected on the new Anchor Bay release.

Everyone who had the (pretty darn good) laserdisc knew that the first DVD was problematic because of bad authoring/transfer... not because the source was bad.

This is a film that could definitely benefit from HD. It won't be Hot Fuzz... but it could still be impressive. I definitely seem room for improvement in both color reproduction and detail. But for folks that hate grainy movies, they had best dial down their expectations. This is a VERY grainy movie.

Indeed, VERY grainy! A TON of old school optical FX, double exposures. People weaned on the modern day superclean CGI look of FX are going to be thrown for a loop.

Yeah, that is how I look at it too.

Although the director's cut of Highlander 2 make it way better than what was released. Part 3 was entertaining, but Source was a complete waste of a movie. Everything from the post apocalyptic setting to the bad dialog to the EMO Duncan made this film suck. The general premise of it wasn't bad, but everything they did really made it just terrible.

Even the Anchor Bay release is pretty awful as far as PQ is concerned. It'd have to be totally remastered for HDM.

'Highlander' was just recently on HDNET on Directv in HD and the new HD version was spectacular, it looked like it was shot yesterday and was a super crisp and clean transfer. They did a great job on this one. Its just a matter of time before it reaches us via disc form, probably blu-ray in the U.S. But if you are a fan of this film it was definately the best its ever looked. I can't watch my DVD's of it (yes I have every version that's been released of it on DVD). Fortunately I've got it on my HD DVR along with the HD version of 'Goldfinger' and 'From Russia With Love' which are also incredible.

The Anchor Bay release uses the EXACT same video master from the THX-certified Director's Cut laserdisc that was recycled for the first Highlander Anniversary DVD. The only thing they did differently was create a DTS-ES mix from the audio elements they got when they bought the package. The first Highlander needs a full-blown 2007 style restoration similar to what they did for the last DVD release of Highlander 2. HDNET usually does their own transfers from film prints or negatives or whatever is available to them so what you see there is probably not a new transfer done by the people who control the rights to the films. At any rate, the rights to the first two films rest with two different Blu-Ray exclusive companies (Starz and Lion's Gate) while the next two films are Weinstein (unless they gave them up when they left Disney) and the last film is Lions Gate. All in all we won't get an HD boxset of all the films unless three different companies put them out singularly. Oddly enough there are several different versions of The Source overseas that are radically different from the final US version so who knows what we'll get on DVD or HDM.

Are there any versions of the source that doesn't suck?

I don't think any amount of re-editing can save Highlander: The Source from sucking. It was a disaster on pretty much every level.

It had a neat concept though.

This movie is great, didn't it get redited for the US market?

Given how badly this film has been treated in the past, I don't think theres a hope in hell that it would get a totally new, loving transfer.

Early VHS/LD editions were a trimmed "US cut", which lost some really cool footage. Anything in 1.33:1 aspect ratio is likely a cut version.

The final laserdisc deluxe edition in the mid-1990s (and all subsequent DVD editions) have been the proper full cut. Basically, you'd have to work really hard at this point to find the edited version.

I'd have to quibble with this a bit. This is a fairly low-budget cult flick (that bombed theatrically). With the exception of the TERRIBLE original DVD transfer (which, in fairness, was one of the first DVDs released), I think this has been treated incredibly well on home video for the past decade.

Again, we got a gorgeous laserdisc with tons of great supplements (and the correct European cut). And the Anchor Bay "Immortal Edition" (while focusing a bit too heavily on Queen music) was very nice as well -- for supplements, packaging, and picture quality.

There is definitely room for improvement -- and for this film I welcome any and all improvements. But I wouldn't say it's been treated "badly".
