View Full Version : Another question from a Mac noob. Is there a way to change font size in Safari?

Ok, so long story short my mom ordered my Macbook Pro for me when we bought it instead of letting me do it (big mistake) and got talked into buying the "Super High Resolution Screen" AKA 1920x1200. As you may very well imagine 1920x1200 on a 17" monitor is beyond overkill and makes everything incredibly freakin small.

I've been dealing with it since July but my eyes can't take it anymore, I get massive headaches everytime I try to read for extended periods of time. Changing the resolution doesn't help either because anything other than my screens native res is just fuzzy and hurts my eyes as much, if not more, than the uber tiny font.

So my question is is there a way to make the font bigger in Safari or am I screwed? I found the option to change "Standard" and "Fixed Width" fonts in the appearance tab under Preferences but neither of them seem to be changing much of anything; message boards, Wikipedia articles, blogs (such as Kotaku), and pretty much anything else I have to read is still super tiny.

Please help, I'm gonna need a new prescription for my contacts if this keeps up much longer.

When you change the font sizes in Safari preferences, you have to highlight the size you desire in the font window and hit the return key to make the size change "stick".

Otherwise, hit Command + to increase the font size until you get it where you want...

LOL! I'm having the same problem, but on the regular 17" screen... guess I'm not 21 anymore.
Anyway, here's what I did (in addition to the above mentioned trick): you can customize the address bar in safari (Menu View-> Customize Address Bar...), and one pair of buttons offer the "decrease / increase font size". I find this very convenient to have this in the toolbar as it allows you to adjust font size on a per-window level, depending on the content.

Can we say here: "Apple, please activate resolution independence in Safari for Leopard?" You would get an oh-so-beautiful looking screen with 1920x1200 on the 17", if you could scale up the image. And they could do this. In a way, they've already done it for Safari for iPhone. As far as I can tell, that pinch zoom motion activates a form of R-I. So let's hear it: resolution independence for WebKit! Make my day.

Also, you can go into the Universal Access System Pref and turn on zoom, and then control it via the keyboard. Not exactly what resolution independence would accomplish, but it still is useful. Especially for those of us with increasing vision problems.

Now if Apple would just tie in Universal Access' zoom feature with resolution independence, we could bypass Apple's plan to implement R-I by allowing software developers to write it into the apps. I guess the problem is getting developers to follow UI and Core tech guidelines for it before Apple will enable it system wide, so that some odd implementations don't lead to weird UI glitches and looks. But Universal Access already creates problems with display (resolution decreases as zoom increases). So why not accept a new problem (UI integrity) for getting rid of an old problem (decreasing resolution)? Universal Access is all about tradeoffs at the system level in its current incarnation.

And another solution:

You can set the minimum font size used by Safari in the Advanced tab of Safari's preferences window.

Thank you very much folks, I can see quite nicely now and my eyes and head don't hurt like hell when using my computer.
