View Full Version : What HI-END audio company will be sold next?
mark haflich 11-13-07, 05:24 PM The title is self explanatory. I haven't a clue. I couldn't post a thing but I would bet that some HI-END audio company will be sold by years end. Anybody want to speculate? Not me. Could piss off any company mentioned big time.
Steve Bruzonsky 11-13-07, 07:20 PM Probably whatever digital projector you buy to replace your Marquee CRT. That would serve you right.
Or maybe high end home theater and audio dealer like -- Soundworks in Kensington, Md.
Or mebbe this thread is trolling for speculation. One thing when a company actually changes ownership, another thing to speculate on it and cause perhaps unjust concern re a company. ANd Mark, you not only own an audio and home theater dealership, but you're a retired govt attorney. You know better. HA!
Now if there's any actual facts suggesting a particular company may be sold, that would be a different story.
And Mark, I can tell ya one company that ain't bein' sold and will do business for years and years as is. Aerial Acoustics. And Mark, don't you have the Aerial 10Ts in your home theater. They were great once. But when ya gonna sell 'em and get some real speakers,
new Aerial 9s, or even 20Ts.
And Mark, did you actually replace your Marquee, who you said you were doin' in that long winded thread at the CRT forum the other month. If so, what digital projector did you get?
thebland 11-13-07, 07:46 PM WHere is the Theta news...I noted that Evelyn is checking in, but no word..
mark haflich 11-13-07, 08:36 PM I love your posts Steve. So concise. You must charge by the page.
Seriously over the last year or so Polk, Mirage, Energy, Sunfire, Martin Logan, Theta, all were sold. I am sure there are more that I am leaving out. Harmon was announced and that would include all the companies under its umbrella such as Lexicon, Levinson, etc. I would suspect the average is about one every month or so. My thread is who might be next. I haven't a clue and really could care less. But its interesting I suppose.
Its easy to come up with companies that won't be sold. I give you a gold star on Aerial. I could add another 30 or 40 that won't be sold but failing to include some company could be viewed as a suggestion that it might be up for sale.
I don't have a two channel system at home presently. My AV time is spent in my HT watching sports and a few movies.
MY CRT is up for sale. But the bottom feeders that inhabit large portions of the CRT universe want me to sell it to them for a song. I'd rather trash it including with all those expensive and great MP mods rather than be taken advantage of. Hey. Its just me.
The projector for me right now will be the Sim2 C3x 1080. Its the best thing out there for under $30K and like some others here I get my stuff at below dealer cost. I try not to write about my present generation stuff because getting it at insider prices could jaundice my reports of it. Some times like some of you I really like the stuff and will write about it. My Lumagen Radiance for example. My Stewart Filmscreen. My MP mods for my hopefully soon to depart or be put in storage Marquee. My Moome input card. Or my dislike of somethings, like the HD Fury. Right now I am enjoying a lot of sports in my HT but I would like a brighter picture and a lot less playing with the projector to keep everything optomized.
My eye sight is fine other than for a drooping eye lid (other parts of me are dropping too but a discussion of them would not be appropriate). MP says my eye sight disqualifies me from being able to make valid judgements of digitals against CRT. MP is never ever wrong so my eye sight must be failing. If I go blind, I can go back to listening to music insteads of primarily watching stuff.
Common Steve. Quit your nonsensical babbling. Who do you really think might be next?

Mark, you were doing great until your nonsensical babbling in your second to last sentence!
I really have no idea who is next? Mebbe the Bland can contribute some substance to this thread. Who knows?

Steve, I want you to analyze this mentality for me. No offense to Mark at all, we've met, he's a great guy and all, but I don't get this attitude, probably because I'm a cheap bastard..:p
My take on it is that CRT is an obsolete technology, and sales of used CRT projectors are in the dumper, both volume wise and price wise. THe few that are on eBay in as is shape are going for nothing. Literally nothing.
So you have someone like Mark here that says ' I'll take (I'll pick $5K as a price), or I'll throw it out.
Well, it's probably pretty obvious that despite some CRT enthusiast's dreams (mine included), CRT pricing is not ever going back up, they are continuing to drop. So in 6 months, his set might sell for $1000 on ebay as compared to the $1500 or so it might get now.
Now, I guess if Mark can indeed afford to throw it out, then good for him. HOWEVER.. throwing it out will net him $0.00, so ANY offer over that in theory is better than throwing it out. Not to mention the metal, lead, etc that will go into a landfill.
So I don't get the 'I won't get taken advantage of part'. I can understand that he won't sell it to a cheap bastard like me for $500, but why turn down the going value of the set which as I said right now might be $1500 when all the unit is doing is dropping in value?
I had EXACTLY the same attitude from someone on eBay who had a Runco 1101 (Marquee equivalent) that didn't sell for the $3K asking price. I offered $2500 after the auction, and was turned down flat, the guy said that he'd throw it out rather than take less than $3K for it. We exchanged a few emails, and it turned out that he was quoted $3K to repair the 'power switch' (it actually was the power suply). When I offered to repair his for $250, he turned that down too, saying he'd rather pay $3K for a new one than get the existing one repaired. Huh? Again, I don't get the mentality. Needless to say, the set is now in a landfill somewhere rather than at my place...;)
So no offense Mark, but your logic isn't logical to me..:)

Its all an excuse because Mark is gonna keep using his CRT and say he couldn't sell it so he's keepin' it!!!!
Mark's had a bit of an attitude. He luvs to just give me SH__T re my little ol Dwin. And re sellin' his CRT. Its just an act. He's actually a great guy, very knmowledgeable re stereo and home theater, and he's a trustworthy, excellent retailer who ain't goin' out of business too.
He put a lot of $$, work and luv into his Marqee CRT. He doesn't need the $$ for it. He just hates the principal of giving it away.
mark haflich 11-14-07, 08:32 AM I gave a lot of women sex for free and the end result was marriage.
Hi ho, hi ho, a babbling I will go, hi ho hi ho.
Also I have lots of storage space. I won't actually throw it out. I'll store it and eventually sell it off for the parts. I could donate it to charity also and take a tax deduction. Someone might want the mods and the precious VIM03 (modded) without having to wait whatever is the waiting time now. whatever. I really don't care. The whole idea is to deny the bottom feeders a score. It feels so good. To force a win win on someone whose whole miserable life is based on fornicating someone on a deal.
Enough. Please lets stay on the important topic of this thread. You see how Steve, who continually bitches about his threads going off topic, derailed this one with all sorts of extraneous stuff. PLEASE. I want to know. What company DO YOU (who me?, YES YOU) will be sold next?
I know of a major high end electronics company that has been up for sale for years but the asking oprice is rediculous. I suspect another big name might be up for sale too. The principals of many companies are getting up in their years, business has and is declining, employees are being let go, manufacturing is being moved at least partially off shore. Why not cash out?

Talk about being "off topic:
Art Sonneborn 11-14-07, 10:04 AM I wish I were as colorful as Mark then I could make this thread interesting.

Andrikos 11-14-07, 10:27 AM Wilson Audio will be sold to the Republik of China and the speakers will now incorporate plastic boxes and 3 cent accordion paper drivers.
The MSRPs, however, will remain the same... ;)

You can't make up all your sexual experiences like Mark does?

The first time I had sex I was really scared.
I was all alone.

Curt/Mark - you guys should read the premise and theory behind the Ultimatum Game. It's a social experiment which appears similar to the reasoning behind this "take it or leave it" CRT sales proposition ;)

mark haflich 11-14-07, 05:01 PM Why the crack about my sex life? I was in law school pre aids and free love. I have no need to fabricate anything. I just out of respect can't name names. If you want stories and boy to I have many, it will have to be in a private conversation. Life was very very very good then. Let's just leave it at that. And if you can't, put enough money up, I'll match it and let a qualified poly graph examiner decide if I am telling the truth.
Steve. If you can't stay on topic, start a new bitch at Haflich thread.
Send me a PM. But keep this thread on topic.

Mark, you need some shock therapy to improve your memory. You brought up your sex life in this thread first, out of thin air, why I don't know. You started it. Now you finish it. (I bet your wife tells ya that, too).
And I already know all about your college and post college sex life. When you visited here the other year, you wouldn't shut up about it. HA!
mark haflich 11-14-07, 06:14 PM Steve you are losing it. We talked about your HT and other assorted things. Sex wasn't one of them. I have the tapes!
Curt. I was a little scared the first time too. The lady, a student, I do not remember here name, after the first time that night asked me if I smoked after sex. I answered no (I was a pipe smoker then).
I asked her if she smoked after sex. Her answer?
"I don't know I've never looked!"
My response was another question. Ready?
You happy Steve?
mark haflich 11-14-07, 06:31 PM Maybe Steve should start a new thread. "Does the HIGH END help or hurt your sex life?"
Steve Bruzonsky 11-14-07, 06:36 PM Maybe Steve shoulkd start a new thread. "Does the HIGH END help or hurt your sex life?"
Funny guy. Back when I attended GW Law 75-78, almost every cute gal I met on Capitol Hill told me to leave her alone and go study, so someday I could be successful like their stud lawyer boyfriend - you guessed it, they were talkin' about Mark Haflich. They said he always was their 2nd choice to Ted Kennedy.
mark haflich 11-14-07, 08:02 PM I'm sorry I forget what years you were in law school. I went from 1967 - 1971 and was in the Boston area. I came to Washington in 1971, I was married by 1974. Seperated in 1976. You and I were single in Washington when you went to law school here. I kninda doubt our paths or womens paths ever crossed but if only you were here in 1973 and you had met my first wife (very cute) and she fell in love with you and you with her, it would have saved me a bad marriage and a lot of grief. Why weren't you there when I needed you?
I did study every night while a law student but when midnight came, the books were shut and other things were opened. I existed on less than four hours sleep per night those days, generally from about 3 AM to 7 AM.
P.S. Steve's wife is very bright and attractive. A nice lady. Steve ended up doing a lot better than the stumbling bumbling with the women law student he wants you to believe he was. In those pre-aids days Washinton was full of young beutiful sexually liberated women. Even a blind squirrel like Steve would have us believe he was, would stumble accross an acorn every once and a while. And the DC area was a field of acorns.
Come on. Get the last word in (I'll let you this once) and fess up a company name.
DOMAIN64 11-14-07, 08:37 PM Ahhhhh, the good old days...........
Makes me want to start smoking a pipe :p
Andrikos 11-15-07, 11:33 AM Interesting thing is I had the only post relevant to this thread... :)
