1408 was announced in Germany to be released in February 2008.
This is a Weinstein title in the US, however, no one knows, whether they'll release anything at all.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it disgraceful that this supposed supporter of HD DVD let's all their stuff get released in other countries, but can't be bothered to release any of it here?

I can assure you it isn't just you, but it isn't me... studio's have their reasons, and although as fans we would like to see everything get released I am sure there are numerous reasons they don't, a disgrace is not a word I would use at all.
They are in this business to make money, if they don't think they can make enough of it by releasing in North America then they won't, what makes that so disgraceful?

I'm guessing Digital Man5's issue is that if some German company that holds the local rights to it thinks they can make money selling it, why wouldn't the US company also be able to make even more? Was the film that much more popular in Germany, a la David Hasselhoff? Or does that German company hold the European rights (and thus a bigger market)?

No, just the rights for Germany.
If it was that popular, I don't know, I didn't experience many discussions about the movie among my friends.

I don't think we know enough about either market to make a call... the company in Germany may have the resources available to them to make it financial viable to release the title, I personally just don't know enough about these companies and the decisions they make to think a lack of releases is 'disgraceful' or any other derogatory remark people use when their favorite movies aren't released. But that is just me, clearly I'm in the minority here because there are plenty of negative messages on these forums about studios who don't release enough movies to peoples likings.
crap like this makes no sense.
