I don't recall this being mentioned here before but in case anyone was interested. I don't think it will be much better than EyeTV but competition is always good.

Although I do not use EyeTV myself, I read more complaints/problems with the software on this forum than any other piece of software. I am quite surprised that no one has yet tried SageTV or posted here about it. I would really like to see a comparison between this product and EyeTV and possibly SageTV. Any volunteers?

I don't believe anyone here own's the single tv card that is supported by SageTV. The ATI TV Wonder may change that though. Still, does SageTV have any longevity on the mac platform? Elgato/EyeTV has a greater commitment, although that doesn't necessarily seem to translate to added features or support.

I agree that it is a problem with SageTV that they don't support more cards. However, I posted here a link to their forum several weeks ago that someone had written a script or program that permits SageTV to be used with HDHomerun. No one here seemed interested in that.

Nevertheless, quite a few people here seem to have the HDHomerun, so, there could be people who could try it and report back.

Elgato has had almost a monopoly on the Mac platform and perhaps that is why they haven't felt a need to improve their software. Perhaps now with more competition, that will change. Nevertheless, I would guess that many would be interested in a three-way comparison between these products.

Elgato IS clearly actively developing/improving the EyeTV software -- the problem is that they are more concerned with adding new features than fixing old bugs. (Unless we buy that all the digital audio bugs -- by far my number one complaint -- are 100% Apple's fault.)

I find it hard to believe SageTV will be both as useful as EyeTV and bug free, but maybe I'm just suffering from the Mac DVR version of Stockholm syndrome :)

But even if it were to fully support the HD Home Run (without 3rd party hacks), it won't support the EyeTV 500 and now that I have tasted the ability to record 3 channels at once, I am in no mood to give it up. So I'm afraid I must decline the role of SageTV tester.

Although I do not use EyeTV myself, I read more complaints/problems with the software on this forum than any other piece of software. That's because so many of us use it. We're not going to bitch about software we never use. (Well, maybe some of us will. :D ) For all our moaning when a favorite feature stops working, EyeTV remains a pretty amazing software & hardware combo and the price is hard to beat. I just picked up another EyeTV 500 receiver off eBay last week for $80. That's the fifth 500 I've bought. The price certainly compares favorably with what I paid for my first EyeTV 500 more than four years ago. I'm not sure how long 500 supplies will last at eBay before they become scarce, but now's a great time to grab a used EyeTV 500.

I remain very pleased that Elgato continues to support EyeTV 500s long after they stopped making them. That says a lot for Elgato's corporate ethic. How many others continue to support EOL'ed hardware two years down the road?

Huh? How many complaints are there about iTunes or VLC? And don't many more of us use those programs too?

Doesn't Apple? (Leopard on G4s, for example, four years after discontinued.)
