View Full Version : Lack Of HD-DVD Stock > Open Letter to Warner and Dreamworks <
DavidEC 11-14-07, 01:03 AM Dear Warner and Dreamworks HD-DVD Divisions:
Today I spent over four hours trying to find your newest releases 'Oceans Box Set' & 'Shrek The Third' in local stores that sell HD-DVD disc's;
Wal-Mart (six stores), Target (four stores), K-Mart (two stores), Best Buy (two stores), Circuit City (one store)
When I called around the only store to have 'Shrek-3' on HD-DVD in stock would not hold me a copy and when I got to the store none were left on the shelf! To meet family needs ended up purchasing the standard release of "Shrek-3" [wonder how many HD-DVD disc sales were lost?]
A few of the stores had one or two copies of 'Ocean's Thirteen HD-DVD' but I was looking for the 'BOX SET' since no announcement of the earlier two films being sold as single releases.. none could be found and the online stores were even listing a two or more week back order shipping delay!?!
Why such a shortage of disc's??
Did you or the purchasing agents for the stores under estimate the demand?

MidnightWatcher 11-14-07, 01:04 AM Amazon.com :)
lockheede 11-14-07, 01:09 AM Amazon says they are 1-3 weeks from re-stocking the boxset.
Edit: Very strange. I just placed the order for the boxset (as I too ran to a couple different stores looking for it) and it says delivery by 11/16. I am sure once the order is actually confirmed that will be adjusted.
DavidEC 11-14-07, 01:10 AM Amazon.com :)
Amazon is now listing up to a three week delay / backorder for new orders of Oceans Box Set on HD-DVD.
Also my employer gives out $25 Visa Gift cards for "AT_A_BOY's" which I us to purchased my movies with and online retailer have to have all the funds on a single payment system... and these cards charge a $7 fee to move funds to a single card, where local retailers are able to work with muliti-funding to pay for items in the store.

Quetzalcoatl 11-14-07, 01:25 AM I saw both of those in large quanties at my local Best Buy and Circuit City. As to the others they donot stock HDM very well. So I would say it was your region that might have been shorted.
BioSehnsucht 11-14-07, 04:11 AM I still haven't seen 2001 on either format in any retail outlet around me.
mcgarnagle 11-14-07, 04:26 AM Maybe you should write a letter to the RETAILERS asking them to actually stock the item. I'm sure warner/dreamworks would be thrilled to ship out more copies but retailers aren't willing to waste shelf space for HDM since it is still so niche...

....At least two of the stores are telling me that that it is the releasing company not supplying them... they had/have self space sitting empty... And doing a store stock search at Best Buy none of the Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas (and this is counting the one of the largest metro areas in the USA, Dallas/Ft.Worth), and KS Mo area had any of the Oceans box sets on HD-DVD in stock on Tuesday, and as reported in another thread a number of other stores stated in stock online but no stock on hand at store opening.

I can't believe you bought the SD-DVD after 1 days search!
DavidEC 11-14-07, 09:54 AM I can't believe you bought the SD-DVD after 1 days search!
Some times you have to do what the family wants! "...To meet family needs..." and if 15 local stores did not have it in stock the chances of it becoming in stock so far is rare.
NoThru22 11-14-07, 09:57 AM ....At least two of the stores are telling me that that it is the releasing company not supplying them...
I can guarantee that you didn't speak to a single purchasing agent at any of the stores you listed.
electronicpakrat 11-14-07, 09:58 AM So, what you're saying is that these are selling like the Wii ? :p

--DavidI'm sure you'd prefer the instant gratification of walking out of the store with the HD-DVD, and you should have that option. But given the current market realities I would just use those Visa gift cards for groceries and then buy the movies online with the $ saved, with free shipping and no sales tax. But then I rarely feel the need to get something and watch it immediately on release day.
bunger3_16 11-14-07, 01:23 PM Honestly, what I do with almost all hd-dvd releases is buy from walmart.com and select free site-to-store shipping. Most of them are at my store (which is a couple blocks away) in 3-4 days, and nearly all of the movies I have looked at (including Shrek 3 and Ocean's boxed set) are in stock. None of these titles are in stock at the store I go to though, although they did have Transformers when it came out.
Fortunately for me, stock at the Best Buys in Columbia and Jeff City MO stores are generally excellent (must not be many HDM owners in the area), although Circuit City has been horrible for me.
drj2000 11-14-07, 01:34 PM Up here in the Great White North Future shop and Bestbut had numerous copies of both Shrek and Oceans 13 but no box sets. I was lucky enough to find the Oceans boxset at Walmart (they had 2 each in HD and BD).
Vern Dias 11-17-07, 08:38 AM Fry's on I635 in the DFW area had a number of the Ocean's box sets on Tuesday, along with the Close Encounter's box sets.

Same for Plano, though I did a -1 on their Ocean's box set stock...

11/17, New HD-DVD player owner, New wide screen LCD TV owner, New HD-DVD disc owner 2 with 5 coming freebies. I live in a rural area 90 miles south of Chicago. I went to our small Wal Mart store and they had 2 HD discs. I then went to a Blockbuster rental store and they had 4 HD discs. I did join Netflix and 1st DVD they sent me froze up my player (not here for that) only reason I joined was to try other HDs I actually would prefer to buy new discs etc. I just thought this would be good place to vent a bit, pass on the info to others. I'm stubborn going to stick with HD, Course I actually purchased Beta yrs ago.
11/18, Went to a Wal Mart super ctr this morning and they had 6 HD-DVDs
CC around here had 2 copies of the box set and I can't tell you how many copies of Shrek on HD I saw in my shopping travels today.
Must be your region.
ragar01 11-17-07, 08:14 PM The BB closest to my office (on John R.) had multiple copies of Shrek 3. I bought one.
They also had 3 copies of the Oceans box.
This was on Friday night.

dkwhite 11-17-07, 08:51 PM I'm surprised there's not a petition to have Speilberg movies released in HD-DVD. seriously. Maybe I'll make one. hehe.

Meanwhile [here] in another part of Canada it took them 3 days to get Shrek HD DVD on to the shelf even though their website showed that they had it at the store the at the same time that the standadrd DVD was put on display. It seems that high def is not a priority.
DavidEC 11-27-07, 11:06 PM FYI: Now my Pre-Order for "The Omega Man" directly from the 'WB' store has been backordered!?!?!
I asked this same question in another thread:
Jaw hitting the floor... I had pre-ordered Omega Man from the Warner Brothers Online due to the low price discount coupon and since it had not shipped yet was going to cancel the order "'IF'" I could of found it locally.. ..Could not find..
..Now I get a email from 'WB' saying they are back ordering and may not ship for 30days.. and part of the package was a movie pass for "I AM A LEDGEND" which most movie passes that I have gotten with a DVD/VHS expire two weeks after the release of the movie... ...so now I may not get the HD-DVD till after the movie pass expires..
I would like to hear from the studios.. ...are retailers really under stocking produced HD-DVD's?
..Did the Wal-Mart Nov'2nd sale really catch them that much off guard!?!
--David
This is just speculation but I think they are not pressing enough copies. I think that is why Netflix/BB online are having trouble filling demand for new releases and probably why Amazon takes time to ship orders sometimes.
Edit: Netflix is really starting to get on my nerves. I have been a member since their inception and have never had a problem getting new releases until the last couple of months.
Picked up Shrek 3 at Wal-Mart last night, left 2 copies on the shelf. Shrek had two grids for it, so it looked like 8 had sold including the copy I bought. I also bought the single Oceans 12, that purchase just left one on the shelf.
I also bought about 9 other titles between $14.96 and $19.96.
DigitalfreakNYC 11-28-07, 09:22 AM I can't even get Oceans from WB directly! I pre-ordered the trilogy and...nothing.
JaylisJayP 11-28-07, 11:08 AM didn't have any trouble finding either of those items...not that I'd buy Shrek the Third if someone had a gun to my head.
OggideM 11-28-07, 11:19 AM Yesterday at WorstBuy (Monroeville, Monroeville Mall Annex PA location)
Went in looking for Anchorman and Old School
HD-DVD shelves: several of Omega Man. Stuffed dead tight between Nip Tuck and Payback.
No Old School or Anchorman to be seen anywhere. As if they hadn't been racked up at all today-- even through the public website and the instore inventory system say they have copies. Well- guess where they are... On the new release aisle mixed in with a bunch of SD-DVD new releases. I could maybe understand if these WERE NOT CATALOGUE titles! What the hell. I would never have bothered looking there without an employee suggestion.
Anyways, they only had about 4 copies of each (and one 'spot' in the shelf allocated to each). I know catalogues sell poorly, and comedies especially so... but I think they'll sell 4 copies of these for sure... IF ANYONE CAN ACTUALLY FIND THEM...

Personally, I would never buy a new release SD again. Maybe only cheesy $5 bin movies.
To put it bluntly, do your shopping online or preorder in a dedicated movie store(which can be expensive). The only store i find hard to believe didn't keep decent stock and if the didn't have it then and there does restock titles quickly is Best Buy(at least the two nearest me).The reason most folks that post in this forum have their copies of the HD-DVD's on time is that they either preorder from places like Amazon,DVD Empire,HD Movie Source, etc. and bypass retail brick and mortar altogether.
Hope you have better luck in the future.

I can assure you they were put there for a reason that I would not rather get into on here.
mike171979 11-28-07, 12:46 PM It seems Warner Bros. continues to under produce, or even produce any, HD DVDs.
I don't know whats going on over there, but my local Best Buy and Fry's had both in Blu Ray, but no one had any HD DVDs of The Omega Man or The Ocean's Trilogy.
I thought HD DVDs were easier and cheaper to make????
Blu Ray's sales numbers are increasing, simply because I cannot buy the movies in HD DVD, so I just buy them in Blu Ray instead.
It is up to Best Buy what they order, but maybe the Blue Shirts just did not put them out.
okieraider 11-28-07, 01:12 PM I'm not sure about the Oceans trilogy, but there are plenty of copies of Shrek 3 at Best Buy here in OKC.

Well now my jaw has hit the floor twice this week.. Tuesday I get a notice of back order saying it will take 30days to fill my order and then on Thursday I received my order UPS-RED/Overnight??
And I was correct about the "Movie Money" as it does expire on 12/31/07..
But I am sure the my wife and I will be able to see it before the coupon expires now!

I wonder if this is the influx of new users causing the back up. In the last month they've added a few hundred thousand hd dvd owners. I wonder if they now have to switch over lines or simply weren't ready for hd dvd to add almost third of its installed base in less than a month.
Majestyk 11-29-07, 11:30 PM So many "buy it online" replies but this doesn't bode well for the format, when most people buy in stores.

Konrad63 11-29-07, 11:49 PM I'm an Amazon Prime member but I was out shopping today. The pickings at the local Wal-Mart super center and Target were mighty slim for HD-DVD.
shadowrage 11-30-07, 12:52 AM I just checked the BBs around me and almost all of the new Warner titles are unvailable on both formats.
Does WB have members of the WGA that are in charge of shipping? Pay the writers and send me my movies.
Potter is a freaking money printing machine, what's going on? There has to be some excuse. I hope there is.
Dont all of the Dreamworks movies come from Mexico? Does Warner use the same presses.

Must be something about Central Missouri. Both were in stock release week at the local Hastings in Warrensburg, MO. Not to mention 2001 and most of the Kubrick films (excluding FMJ for some reason).

Agree. I like the format but am considering a switch. Call me "swinging" at the moment. Bluray seems to have a LOT more retailer support.
I'm probably going to get endlessly flamed for saying it.

Want don't you speak up. Tell the managers at the store you want them to stock HD DVD.
In the meantime, Amazon Prime really is great. I have gotten every single HD DVD I pre-ordered on release day. Plus with no tax or shipping charges their prices are hard to beat. True, you need to order a lot of items to make up the $75 annual fee, but I order so much stuff from them the fee is a steal for me.
Adam_ME 11-30-07, 10:53 AM My Amazon order for The Omega Man(Blu-ray), Anchorman, and Old School still hasn't shipped. Their website shows all 3 titles as being in stock, so I'm not sure what the holdup is.
Anyone else having the same issue?

Christmas?
thecodeman 11-30-07, 12:29 PM Is there really that much of a problem finding the ocean's boxset/individually? I was just at a local store and they had more copies of it than anything else. Seriously probably 15-20 box sets easy. If you guys want me to get you some copies, I'd be more than willing to help :)
OggideM 11-30-07, 01:10 PM The local CD Warehouse here (with its 50+ Spidey BoxSets on BluRay) already has 3-4 Oceans Boxsets in each format as well as a couple DieHard boxsets.
They had to have come from somewhere
bygdaddy 11-30-07, 07:13 PM To my surprise, my local Best Buy had Anchorman, Hot Rod, Old School, Bean, and The Omega Man. The Omega Man was stickered at $29.99!?!?
