View Full Version : Pesonalized HD DVD gift idea - people with video editing knowledge can you help us?
Everdog 11-14-07, 09:04 AM I plan on getting a couple HD DVD players for some family members as Christmas gifts this year because they are so inexpensive.
Last night I thought of a way to improve on that idea, after I downloaded a free trial version of video editing software, and found that with a click of a button you can create HD DVDs on to regular DVD-Rs (there is large a thread about this).
I took a whole bunch of the digital family photos I have that have much higher resolution than HDM and created a quick and simple slide show. I added some music and added a few special effects and what do you know? I now have a personalized HD DVD to add to the HD DVD player gifts!
The best part is the slideshow looks absolutely amazing in HD. My wife even mentioned how some pictures look almost 3D on the TV, which is great because usually she could care less about HD anything.
The best part is, the DVD-R only cost pennies, the software is free (for now) and the pictures I already had.
Gordon Shumway 11-14-07, 09:08 AM You know my thoughts on giving these as gifts....;)...but I agree, the pic DVD is a very nice touch!!
:)
eapleitez 11-14-07, 09:12 AM I just started burning my HDV tapes to DVD for HD DVD. It's a great side benefit.
Everdog 11-14-07, 09:51 AM I actually have a few things that display digital pictures on a TV (SD or HD) in 480i. The difference between them and a slideshow in 1080p (1080i too) is night and day.
I just need to be creative and make the content interesting now.
Which free editing software are you using?

Its not free, but is a free trial. I used Video Studio 11.
cobolisdead 11-14-07, 10:25 AM I'll have to check this out.
bigjsouth 11-14-07, 10:26 AM Did Video Studio 11 Let you burn the file to disc as well? I have had trouble with making an HD style disc. Thanks J

Yes it did. After I edited my video there is an option to "create disk". After that is selected you can choose DVD or HD DVD. Just choose HD DVD, but burn it to a regulare DVD-R.
There is a free HD bonus pack to that upgrades the software a little. It adds a few more options.
eapleitez 11-14-07, 01:59 PM I also use VideoStudio 11+. I can create the HD DVD, and they play fine. But I have a problem with the burn speed. At maximum write speed, it takes me about 4 hours to do 22 minutes of video. How fast are your burns?

I have only created a couple videos that were a few minutes. They took about 10 - 15 minutes to create (render/burn).
I will be creating longer video this week and will let you know.
eapleitez 11-14-07, 03:23 PM i think I must be doing something wrong. I'm working with HDV captured into .m2t files, and then editing and burning that.
SugarBowl 11-14-07, 03:50 PM don't forget to order some little red cases.

I bet your video is not HD or at least VS think it needs to reencode the video to HD, that's why it take that much time.

Is it taking a long time to convert or to burn the DVD? The software has to convert/create an mpeg2 video file first. That may be what is taking awhile.

That might be it, I'm sure it says something about convert on the create disc stage. I'm editing .m2t files straight. I'm new to this sort of thing. So should I edit in MPEG2 instead? How do I convert m2t to mpeg2?
My processor is a Athlon64 3000+, so it's fairly slow by today's standards.

I would not convert the MPEG2 files first because my bet is that would take a while too. Also, the software may try to do a 2nd conversion when you create the disc, which may take away a little bit of video quality.
The problem is I am a noobie too, so if someone who knows about this stuff can chime in, it would be greatly appreciated.
